Biddeford Journal (Newspaper) - June 13, 1964, Biddeford, Maine Ends experimenting by the associated press Sam Mcdowell is through experimenting but for Mel Mcgaha the end came two years too late. Mcdowell is the left handed fire Baller of the Cleveland indians who is making his third attempt to stay in the majors. Mcgaha managed the indians in 1962, when Mcdowell s Rookie season was punctuated by a trip to the minors. Mcgaha made his debut As manager of the Kansas City athletics Friday night but lost a 3-0 decision to Cleveland. Mcdowell stopped the athletics on four hits for his third Victory without a defeat since returning to the indians two weeks ago. The 21-year-old hurler started experimenting with his pitching not Long after he signed with the indians four years ago for a reported $100,000. Mcdowell expected to follow in the style of Bob Feller and Herb score won three games arid lost seven while compiling a 6.03 earned run average As a Rookie. The experiments did t help last season either As he finished with a 3-5 record and a 4.35 Era. Then came Portland in the Pacific coast league where he stopped testing started pitching and won eight games with out a defeat. One Day after starting his third and possibly last trial with the indians he won in Relief. Two Days later he beat the Chicago White sox 3-2. Now he s won three games allowed Only 1.55 runs per game and struck out 39 batters in 29 innings. Mcdowell s performance Friday night was just one of five Complete games by Al pitchers. Steve Hamilton and Whitey Ford went the distance As the new York Yankees swept the league leading White sox 6-1 and 3-0, Camilo Pascual and Minnesota outlasted Washington 5-3 and Boston whipped Baltimore 7-3 behind Dave Morehead. Mcdowell s wildness twice got him into bases loaded trouble but he escaped safely. He walked six athletics and hit two More. The indians scored their runs in the third inning two coming Home on Bob Chance s single. Ford won his eighth straight game since losing opening Day and recorded his fifth shutout of the season in halting the White sox on four hits in the Nightcap. Tony Kubek belted a two run Homer in the Yankees three run sixth. Hamilton 4-0, scattered nine hits in the opener his first Start for new York. Roger Maris singled across two runs and Joe Pepitone slammed a two run Homer in the fiver in sixth. Bobby Richardson got the 1,000th hit of his 10-year major league career a single in the inning. Felix Mantilla and Bob Tillman each connected with one Man aboard while Tony Conigliaro hit one with the bases empty. Morehead struck out 12 orioles. One of the seven hits off him was Brooks Robinson s two run Homer in the seventh. Those Are the St. Louis cardinals totals for the last two games. Sandy Koufax of the los Angeles dodgers picked up Friday night where teammate Don Drysdale left off thursday night blanking the cardinals 3-0 under almost identical circumstances. Koufax allowed Only four hits White posting his eighth Victory and third shutout. Drysdale also allowed Only four hits while winning his eighth and recording his fourth shutout. The cardinals made a decided improvement Friday losing two men in one argument.
