Bairnsdale tuesday january 13, 1891. Thene can be no doubt that one of the Staple industries of this District should be fruit growing. In no other part of the Colony is it possible to grow successfully so Many different kinds of fruits As it has been proved from experiments made at one time and another can be raised Here. Yet fruit culture As an Industry if three four honorable exceptions be made May be said to be a Practised by our Farmers. If asked the reason Why the Bai Neadle District is not in reality what it has always had the reputation of being in name the Garden of Vic Toria the agriculturist would probably reply that does not pay that even the few now in the Buni. Nesa very often have to accept prices that leave Little no margin of profit nod that i othere embarked in the Industry prices would drop still further until the end would be that the fruit would have to be Given away for nothing i apples on saturday last in the Bairnsdale Market were withdrawn from Sale because the highest offer made for them was slightly under a Penny per Pound. Outside the Market on the same Day More than double that Price was readily obtainable for the same description of fruit. But to show that even at a Penny per Pound there is Money " in fruit culture does not require much reckoning. In California a grower we Are told considers he is Well paid if he gets two cents a Pound for his peaches and a Penny a Pound to the victorian grower Means a return equal to 40 an acre the question surely can not have been looked into thought fully by our Farmers for it must be within their knowledge that Large fortunes have been made by fruit growers who commenced with com. Parat ively Little. We could quote instances nearer Home but let the testimony of a Man who was once in the business suffice for the present occasion. In the argue of saturday last he says a fruit Rowan near Melbourne was grub. Lin g to me the other Day that a Good Deal of the fruit scarcely paid for the picking. And yet i found that with an allotment of six acres of lad which include Housoe and Yard he had made enough from fruit to keep his Wile and family and to give his sons and daughters a decent Start in life. Tao years ago i paid one Man 600 for the yield of cherries on six acres. Then As to the fears entertained by in tending growers of overproduction he dissipates these by a practical ill Untra. Tion of the expansive nature of the Trade fifteen years ago we used to think 1000 Bunches of bananas a month a Large consignment and it seemed to fully the demand. It did not pay to offer them for less than a 6d 2s a dozen retail. And it was often difficult to pet rid of the few Hundred Bunches in store. To All appearances the demand for Banu Naas at that time was fully met and so it was at the Price. Lut bananas Are now Selling in the Streete at 4d and 6d dozen Sadee to what dimes Sions the Trade has extended i am told that during the last four fire weeks nearly 00,000 Bunches of bananas have come into Melbourne. One dealer re celled Over 1oo00 hunches from Fiji by the last steam,.r in one consignment and each Bunch contains from 16 to 18 dozen. Two years ago the importation during the corresponding weeks did not much exceed .20.000 Bunches. The removal of the duty of 91 per Bushel 18 months ago no doubt gave a great impetus to the Trade hut the difference in the Price to the con Sumer is very much More than 9d per Bushel. You ise Here How an increased Supply has actually created a demand where it did not exist before and yet bananas Are purely a dessert fruit and Are in no request for cooking preserving. Let the Supply of apples poems a Price and so Forth be increased in the same Way and As soon As people find t out there will be no difficulty in disposing Oft t. But As he further Points out " the real difficulty lies in the system of die Tributino and the sooner that is Radi Cally reformed the better. Other countries have much that is valuable to teach us in this As in other respects. In the current number of the Aua Trala oian is a clipping describing a method of marketing fruit which of Tanes in Many parts of Germany and has proved successful in securing buyers against a bad article and in giving an Opportunity for Good growers to make sales of a Good article. Samples of various fruits Are placed in dishes for exhibition in Saleroom by growers who Are prepared to furnish various kinds. The buyer has Only to write his name and address on a card with the Quantity he wishes and leave it at the Central office with the number of the plate. The order is then forwarded from the office to the grower who in turn delivers his goods there. Here the fruit is inspected and if it comes up to the Sample in Quality it is forwarded to the buyer. If it proves inferior it is return Eood at once to the grower. A grower who on three occasions furnishes goods inferior to the samples is. Excluded from the Market. The office receives 10 per cent. Commission to inspecting forwarding this Mode of distribution might we think be tried As an Experiment in bairns Dale this season. Therein we believe an abundance of cheap fruit to be obtained if some such Means could he adopted to bring it within the reach of the Public. Among the agricultural jottings published in our fourth Page to Day will be found a certain remedy for the. Extermination of the Codlin Moth. For to Morrow s line Stock sales at Lemington the numbers expected Forward Are 2300 cattle 33000 sheep and 8000 lambs. The minister of lands m Leaon and the minister of mines out trim met in conference on Friday last with reference to the Antis ability of legislating to enable coalmine Long to a rooted on pastoral and grating areas. Statements have been circulated in the English and australian press that sir Graham Berry proposes to Relin Quish his position As agent general and return to Victoria to resume political life hero at the end of the year. These rumours probably arise from the fact that the Extension of the term granted to the present agent general expires in february 1592, but in letters received by the Premier this mail sir Graham Berry in no Way indicates his desire to cur. Tail the full term granted to him. A Branch of the australian natives association is to be opened at Omen on the 2sth inst. By g. H. Wise of Sale the senior vice president of the Board of directors and f. O. Wainwright the general Secretary. I he association will then have branches in almost every Corner of Victoria while Gratifying Progress is being made in the other colonies. A bottle of professor Koch s re. The condition of the London Money Market being favourable for the Pur pose arrangements will says the Arguo at once be made for the float ing of the 3,000,000 loan authorised during last session of parliament. As has been previously explained the loan can Only be considered a new one really in respect to an amount of 550,000. The balance of the total sum is made up of 850,000 which is required to reimburse the Banks for taking up the 0 per cent. Debentures which fell due on the 1st inst., and 1,000,000 authorised in 1889. The Premier states that the government is not Likely to be pressed for funds to carry on until the end of the financial year but As there is the Opportunity of disposing of the loan on satisfactory terms he thinks Itas Well that it should be taken advantage of. Davidson the inspector general of Public works was in Bairnsdale on saturday last and had his memory jogged concerning the Promise made by the minister some time ago that the department would order the dredge w combat to remove the Barrier from the Mouth of the slip. A Cheque for half the estimated Cost of the work Davidson was reminded had been forwarded to Melbourne Many weeks ago and still there were no signs of the department making a move to wards carrying out the work. The answer returned was that the Christ. Mas holidays had been to a great extent responsible for the apparent do. On the motion of Payne. 1g-a plan of the Survey of Howitt s track Froan Bairnsdale to Omeo has been received during the list week from the lands department. The distance Between the two places according to the Survey is about 67 Miles. The Road As surveyed at present Between the Yahoo turnoff and mount Baldhead agrees with the route taken by the recent exploring pay but Between Bairnsdale Nad the Yahoo Tarn. Off and again Between mount Baldhead and Omen the surveyed track diverges very considerably from that taken by the party above mentioned. I think a saving of at least 5 Miles could be effected in the total distance by certain deviations from the present Surrey such deviations would occur in the first and last of the three sections above a decided. As the Survey of Middle Section via that Between Yahoo turn of and mount Baldhead the length of which is about 1l Miles goes along the Only suitable site for a Road Between those two Points i would recommend that lenders be called at once for Clearing that portion of the Road. The Cost would pro Pablo be about l150, and with a Small extra outlay for Clearing a few places be. Tween Bulla Waal and Yahoo turn off a cleared Road would be obtained from Bairnsdale to the Boundary of the Shire at mount Baldhead. From mount Baldhead to Omen the whole of the proposed Road appears to re within thoe Hiro Oft Ose and in this Section by Means of a Davi Tien from the present Survey i i Ank saving of 2 3 Miles can be effected. It will be necessary to come to som agree. Weat with the Oman Shire with reference to this portion of the Road. I do not Sei any Nece dirty for myself to go Over the Road again at present to Mark it out. The Road is now Eleard from air Saddle to Yahoo turn off end tire present Surrey Marks out tie Only suitable site Between the later Point and mount Baldhead. The Only place where my presence will be of any use is in the last Section which is Heoy end the Boundary of this Shire sad until some agreement is entered into with the Osco Shire i shall probably be pre Ellod franc Gold ulcer. In the Section Between Bairnsdale and y ahoo turn. Aft there will be a Choice of at least two months iem., one via Hamilton s aun one Rioa Ullum Waal but which Ever of these routes is eventually adopted it will not interfere with Clearing of the Middle Section which might be gone on with at on the motion of Payne. Coot to be paid out of funds of the Centre Riding. 17-wit reference to the beat site fora bathing House at Eagle Point Bay i beg to state that in my opinion the in in Ponsero place to erect a proper baht Ingo House would is at near the end oaths Presont Pler.
