Bennington Banner (Newspaper) - March 30, 1966, Bennington, Vermont Avs Alley by 4l r a healthy Yankee club could be Al contender Bennington Banner wednesday March 30, 1966-9 like the Flowers that Bloom in the Spring a and it is Spring you know a the classic league is beginning to Boom with some classic scores. Gene Farrar hit High this week with his 833. A foul in the Middle of his last string did no to help any either. Burt Potter of Ben laundry had a very Good series with his 829 Jim Devito Madkour Sace rolled an 808 and Bennington lanes All Star Frank Churchill had an 801. They even picked up some classic splits. Don Fisher converted the 78-10, which must have been something to see. The girls apparently done to want to play second fiddle to anyone. Phyllis Lindsay climbed on the bandwagon with her even 600 triple and Bobbie Letourneau Wasny to far behind with her 588 triple. The ladies also can pick up the splits it would seem looking at the notes in the news Box. Edna Stanley made the 4-7-10 in the girls Eastern ten pin league Bea Kramer converted the 6-7-10 in the City league Helen Woodworth picked up the 4-6-10 split in the City league and also the 6-7-10 split unless someone does no to know their pins and got the 4 and 7 mixed up. Lorraine Cross a Winslow whirled made the 5-7 split and Dorothy Romano picked up the 4-10. Tile Dodge fibres shop league finished up sunday in Cambridge with two teams deadlocked for first. A Roll off is scheduled and if the scores match the talk they should be astronomical. Of course All Hoosick Falls teams always turn in something above Par a or so they say. Back to Bennington Gene Farrar did some fair Bowling in the garage league with his single games of 213, 248 and 237 for a 698 triple. The menus City league had its fair share of Good scores with Bob Townsend a 629, win Beebe a 580, Roger Whites 575 and Steve Lebarron a 573. The latter is a Young Bowler who has the potential to displace some of the a a old pros. Gordy Caslon rolled the High single in the league with his 225 followed by Bob Townsend a 223 and Bill Kelley a 222. John Ottaviano currently leads the league with his 182.30 average. Milt Hattat scored the High three in the Southern it. League with a 574 triple and Charlie Herrington had the High single with 212. Milt Hattat Don Burke and John Billert Are engaged in a drive to the wire for High average with Billert in front by 43 pins. Three weeks remain on the schedule and the one who lets up for one week can be counted out for All intents and purposes. Pownal Valley Dodge fibres and Bellemare a have their own Little Duel going on for second place with Only three Points separating them. Bennington lanes will shortly install Brunswick Tel a score units. This Means that the spectators can get a much better idea of what is going on. The scores will be written at the tables and projected up to a screen above the foul line. After a game the Sheet will be removed from the desk and if it is a close game the bowlers can examine it for mistakes. I suppose that when the score is projected for All to see mistakes Are much less Likely to happen. Also instead of wandering Over to another set of lanes to see How a team which is close to you is faring you Only have to glance up at the projected score. Another advantage for the Bowler is that he at a glance can Tell How close it is to his turn to bowl. A Little Bowler education May be necessary when the units Are first installed but they should prove a Boon to Bowler and Spectator alike. I also understand the Complete House will be looking even better this tall with other changes to be made during the summer. Until next week keep Mem rolling on your favorite lanes and respect the Bowler next to you. Pownal results by Leo h. Petersen up sports editor fort Lauderdale Fla. Up a manager Johnny Keane Hopes the new York Yankees will stay healthy this year. If they do he believes the club will be in the thick of the 1966 american league Pennant race. Last year the Yankees were plagued by injuries to their key players and finished sixth after winning five consecutive pennants. It was the first time in 40 years the Yankees finished in the second division. Keane says it wont happen again unless lightning strikes twice. Quot i thought a year ago at this time that we would win the Pennant but when the injuries hit us and there were Only a few times during the season when i was Able to Field the club i planned on in Spring training a Keane recalled. A of course injuries Are part of the game but we had fair More than our share. A if we can avoid injuries and our players live up to their potential Well be All right this injuries struck Down Mickey Mantle Roger Maris Elston Howard Jim Bouton and Tony Kubek in 1965. That was a big part of the Ball club. Mantle is a question Mark for this season and Kubek has retired. However Maris and Howard appear Back to Normal. But Bouton has a sore shoulder and ifs doubtful whether he will be of much help. If Mantle Maris and Howard Are sound again the Yankee Hopes will soar.
