Texas no simple answer to problems by David Nydick by education specialist the hectic pressure of the school year has been broken by the Christmas vacation period. Hopefully students have had an Opportunity to relax and get away from the regular routine and requirements of school programs. When they return to classes it should have been with renewed Energy and ambition to be successful. The school year is about half Over. There is Good reason to believe that those who have been successful up to this Point will continue to be successful. Parents should encourage them to maintain the Quality of work and the ambition which made it possible. Overconfidence is undesirable but the Good feeling which comes with Success is a valuable asset. It provides students with a desire to continue seeking Success. There Are also those students who have had difficulty with their school work. The problems vary with different children. A number of these students have been Able to solve their problems and thus have joined the ranks of successful learners. Unfortunately there Are still too Many students who continue to have difficulty learning. This group can be divided in several different ways. There Are those who Are doing their Best to succeed and there Are those who Are not trying. Some students have psychological problems which interfere with their ability to learn. Others have physical handicaps which cause learning problems. Parents Are involved in some problems. Some push children beyond their ability. Other parents Lack interest in their children a Are Homes where proper study facilities Are not available. The schools May also be the cause of students difficulties. Poor programs overcrowded facilities and incompetent teachers Are possible factors. It is important to do something about problems now when there is still time to Salvage the years work. Obviously All problems will not be solved in the remainder of the school year. What should be done this can Only be answered properly after the problem has been Analysed and the causes have been determined. Sometimes the problem and causes Are easy to find. Other times the diagnosis May require the efforts of a team of experts possibly composed of educators psychologists physicians neurologists speech therapists and social workers. It is unfair to allow any child to become an educational Accident. If he is having difficulty every Effort should be made to determine tile proper corrective Steps which will help him become a successful student
