The suite selected is that known As the belgian floor Over the Palace. Herma Jesty the Queen gave a Ball at Balmoral to celebrate the event. Sufferings of shipwrecked sailors. The Steamer hours guard of Leith brought into Falmouth on sunday m Cormack and Foster the third Engineer and one of the firemen of the Steamer Mary of Glasgow which broke in two Aud went Down in the Bay of Biscay she left Glasgow for Trinidad on tuesday the 15th october and proceeded All Well until wednesday last when she was in the Bay of Biscay. Nothing had been noticed in the behaviour of the vessel to excite alarm although she was known to be rather weak Aud she was steaming at slow Speed the weather being moderate when suddenly without the slightest warning she completely broke asunder just before the paddle beam doubled up and Sank in three minutes. There was but just time to Cut the lashings of the Lif boat so that she could float off and to cast the other boat Loose when the Mary Sank. As she went Down the life boat was parti Fly stove and capsized twice before righting. The chief mate and four other men. Got into the ship s boat the Captain and five men including the two survivors into the Lifeboat. The Lifeboat though unsinkable was fall of water and the men in her asked the mate to stand by. This he did not do but approached near enough to allow of the Caplin reaching his boat by jumping into the water. Foster stood ready to jump also but before he could reach the boat it is too far Oft. There were left in the Lifeboat m Cormack and Foster the Cook and two Able seamen. When night fell the condition of the poor Fellows was most deplorable. The boat was full of water they Hud no provisions of any kind Only one padd a no Means of knowing a course if they had been Able to keep one and m Cormack and Foster had nothing on but the Light clothes they had been Wear ing in the ens Niue room. The weather Leif in began to freshen and it blew and raised heavily All Day with a Strong sea. The exposure and anxiety soon had a fatal effect on one of the party a Sailor who died quite insane at Daylight on thursday morning. The Cook went next he retained his senses but gradually Sank and at last passed quietly away about 5 in the afternoon. The second Sailor then became delirious several times be jumped overboard and each time was pulled Back. At length Early on Friday morn ing he leaped Overman again and this time his companions too exhausted to be Able to do anything for him. The Steamer horse guard was sighted about 2 o clock on Friday morning. Captain Hill of the horse guard was n True British Sailor. For six Hou s he stood and at length at 8 o clock his immunity was rewarded by the Rescue of m i or muck and Fostr who were then in the last slag of exhaustion. On monday lie Brig egyptian brought into Falmouth the chief Engineer and four other men who had been picked no on the wreck. She brought also intelligence that the other boat had been picked up by a norwegian Brig and that the chief mate and the others had been taken on to Gibraltar. Terrible Shipwreck off Scotland. Seventeen lives lost. The steamship Chusan 953 tons Captain Johnson which cleared from Glasgow for Shanghai on the 6th october had her machinery disabled while passing out of the Channel and was obliged to put into a port on the const of Ireland. On tuesday she was on her Way Back to the Clyde for repairs but was overtaken by the storm Early on wednesday morning and being enable to contend with the Gale was run for Ardrossan Harbour. While endeavouring to make the Harbour she a dashed on the Crinan Rock about fifty Yards from the pier head and almost immediately parted in two. The Crew numbering fifty one souls All told were thus left to Battle with the Waves Aud sad to Tell although they were so near the Shore there was no effectual Means for their Rescue. There was a very distress ing scene witnessed in connection with the attempt to save Captain Johnson and his wife and wife s sister. The three were lashed to a line thrown from the tag but it was found impossible to haul them on Board and Captain Johnson Cut himself free the two ladies were then hauled on Hoard but no Effort that could be put Forth could enable those on the tug to reach the Captain who was swept out of reach and drowned. The Captain s children were also rescued. The Rock on which the ship struck is about 200 Yards from the Lighthouse pier and three of the Crew floated that distance on pieces of the wreck and were hauled on to the pier by the Captain of the Newry. Three others also floated close to the pier but were swept away again and drowned. The most melancholy scene of All was the spectacle presented by a poor fellow who got jammed at the Stern of the vessel. Four carpenters in a Small boat notwithstanding the violence of the storm went out and threw a line to him but he was so fixed that they could not pull him Oft. At last he was seen to fall on his Side and was lost sight of altogether. The scene presented at Ardrossan Harbour was of the most painful nature owing to the close proximity of the vessel to the Laud. Scene in a Church. A very painful scene occurred in a Church i Bucks town ship Ohio recently. It seems from the account Given of the affair by the Dover reporter that the Church has been lately undergoing repairs. Among other improvements a new coat of paint was placed on the pews followed by a coat of varnish the result was most pleasing to Eye but unfortunately the varnish had been applied so late in the week that it had not had time to become hard before sunday when the congregation flocked to their seats. No apparent inconvenience was suffered until the Clergyman was about to deliver the Benediction when the congregation was horrified to find that they were unable to stand up they were in fact glued or rather varnished to their seats. Their spas Modic efforts to Rise were distressing to witness in vain did the clergymen exhort them from the pulpit to resignation. They were seized with a kind of panic. At last they managed to tear themselves from their sittings but at what a Sacri fice the pews were literally covered with fragments of sunday apparel. Shreds of silk lawns Calico Broadcloth and Cassimes were left As souvenirs of the tenacity of varnish used in beautifying that Church. Germany. \ tin arrest of count a rim late a Bassadore at Paris has caused great excitement and discussion through Hunt Europe. People Are shocked at tie severity of his treatment and attribute it to the jealous vindictiveness of Bis March his political rival. Amidst tha conflicting accounts published it is impossible to determine the exact truth hut it is evident that a wide divergence has existed in the policies of the two statesmen count Arnim having favoured the Ultra Montane party and thu forfeited the Confidence and excited the ire of Bis Marck. On Prince. Hohenlohe the court s successor entering upon the duties of the embassy in Paris lie found that numerous documents were missing. Application was made for their Restora Tion but count Arnim declared that All he held were private letters needful to be retained for his vindication. The arrest imprisonment and domiciliary searches followed. It was suspected that count Arnim intended to publish the com promising documents. The emperor has been appealed to by his friends and some highly placed members of the family have resigned their positions. Meanwhile it is stated that the Docu ments in dispute Lave been lodged in the emperor s bands pending the trial. The count s suit to compel the foreign office to prove its property and right to the documents has been rejected by the Berlin municipal court and his suit for release from custod3r has also been rejected by the supreme tribunal. The count has been closely con fined at a sanitary establish ment in Berlin All Intercourse with his friends was prohibited and in was strictly watched. On the 2sth. The Carlist Are in a bad Way. A num Ber of desertions and defeats form the Staple of the month s news but half the reports that Are published Are afterwards contradicted. Don Carlos it appears has not been shot in the stomach by mutinous groups hut there have been serious Delos sons from his Racks. Gen eral Doit Garay has la sued or been dismissed Aud general Elio has been appointed War minister. Several Carlist battalions have declared that they will Only fight under general Dorr Egura. The correspondence of 25th asserts that Don Alphonso with forty men had crossed Edro with the intention of returning to France. Several were killed or taken prisoners during the passage of the River. General Rodn succeeds Carlos brother As commander of the army in the Centre. The last government Levy has failed producing Only 40,000 lads the Gene rals arc clearly incompetent and All patriotic spirit seems extinct. Rumours of intended German intervention have been revived but Are not credited. Information has reached the London office of the new York Herald that the government bad sent a million Sterling to the North of Spain to buy up the car list chiefs. Lord Derby has been import Ned to watch the English ports to prevent the despatch of War materials but be retorted that if the Spanish authorities and the Carlist were determined it would be impossible. With a View to prevent the violations of neutrality by Carlist and their friends on the Franco Spanish Frontier Fin arrangement has been made by which French and Spanish ships of War Are to be stationed on the River bid Assor to watch All vessels carrying the Flag of either country. M. On wednesday eighteen Miles off the Lizard with the Kings Oridge ship of London Captain Symonds bound from London for Syd Ney which vessel foundered in three minutes the ship and cargo being Esti mated to be Worth -32,000. The Crew of the Kandahar state that at the Iuie of the Colli Sion Tho weather was Fine hut hazy with a moderate Breeze from the . It is stated that no thing was seen of the Kingsbridge until immediately before the collision when a Light was observed and the Helm Pat Down. The Crew of the Kandahar did All their could to save the struggling Crew of the Kingsbridge. Unfortunately Many ropes were not Long enough having been broken in the collision but after a time longer ones were obtained and thus some of the Crew and others saved themselves by climbing to the rigging of the Kandahar. A crusade against the = Church of England. Some of the organs of the nonconformists state that an organised attack on the Church is about to t 9 made throughout the whole of the country. The whole of. England Scotland and Wales is to be covered with an elaborate network of local and District agencies \ under the direct Ion of a superintending agent and this Small towns and even the \ larger villages Are to be systematically visited by agents and lecturers. One permanent lecturer or Gordon has been appointed and the staff of occasional lecturers will be gradually increased. Scotland and Wales Are to be separately Ileath with. Immediate and particular attention will be directed to Scotland the liberation society under whose auspices the movement is made being of opinion that the introduction of the Bill for the abolition of patronage has paved the Way for a thoroughly effective disestablishment movement in that country. An Appeal has been made for 20,000 a year to be specially devoted to these objects and the Campaign will be formally opened by a conference for the North of England which was to be held at Manchester in november. The German " the thriving German Colony on the Rio Grande de sul at the Southern extremity of Brazil seems Likely to be brought to speedy ruin by the barbarities of a band of religious fanatics who have been committing some dreadful atrocities recently. These people Are nearly All germans and arc called " their Leader or Prophet is a Man named Maurer and their principal Tenet is that Christ appeared upon Earth in the per son of Jacobi Maimer s wife. They also cherish Peculiar notions about Judas Iscariot believing that he was a Man actuated by the highest and holiest motives and that he Laboured through life for the fulfilment of prophecy. Brazil is on the whole rather a tolerant country and probably no one would have thought it Worth while to interfere with the eccentricities of the fuckers hut it seems that in their anxiety to prevent schism they have recently Burnt the House of a Man who had seceded from Tho Faith shooting Down All the inmates and leaving them to to burned. The authorities at once sent 200 men with two pieces of artillery to bring the fuckers to reason hut they entrenched themselves in the House of the Prophet and succeeded in driving Hack Tho troops with a loss of five killed and thirty wounded. A Force numbering 600 men was next sent out which drove Tho fanatics into the Woods but they re turned in a couple of Days and recovered then positions inflicting serious loss on the soldiers and killing the colonel. Naturally elated by Success the fuckers were by latest accounts burning and destroying everything within their reach and shooting men women and children. They Are said to be Well armed and splendid shots and they possess a species of hand grenade which is used for firing houses. Monsignor theodoll. The italian papers give particulars of the capture of monsignor theodoll one of the Pope s chamberlains by brigands. He was staying at the monastery of Tri Multi and after the custom of roman prelates was taking a walk after dinner in a Wood through which a Road had recently been constructed when five ruffians armed with guns stopped him saying in in the neapolitan dialect " we be been waiting for you for the last ten Days now then follow it May to easily be imagined in what state poor Hon Sig nor theodoll found himself. There was however no help for it. He knew that and resistance would be useless and he followed the brigands to the top of a Bill. The servants and the monks of the Abbey who at the usual hour no Mon Signor return became rather frightened and walked through the Wood to see what had happened to the old prelate. Their fright soon changed into terror when meeting a Young lad they received from from him a scroll of paper on which monsignor theodoll in his own hand bad written Lam captured by the Brig ads who demand 50,000 francs for my Ransom. The servant and the monks ran Back to the Abbey mustered some 20,000 francs carried them to the top of a Hill where they found monsignor the Todoli seated under a tree with his coat torn to pieces and crying like a child. Poor old Man his position As a prisoner was not quite so pleasant As that of the other prisoner at the Vatican with whom he would willingly have changed places. The brigands refused the Money saying that a monsignor was not Worth a Farthing less than fifty thousand francs and re j fused to liberate the preface. Monsignor theodoll followed by his servant and of course the brigands was dragged about for two Days and two nights from Hill to Hill from Forest to Forest until at last the entire sum demanded made its appearance then he was set free. The family Aud servants of monsignor theodoll. In order not to Compromise the life of the prisoner made no mention of the fact to the authorities until the captured prelate had been set at Liberty.
