suffered a severe heart ending a Long career working for Thomas Chevrolet in the body Elmer Smith turned to the Bureau of vocational rehabilitation bar for help a second several years Smith now has a successful upholstery business of his the bar officials say Elmer is a Good example of what handicapped people can do if they he could have said its not Worth it and stayed on disability income for the rest of his life if he explained de chief Counselor for the bar in Bedford it is the bars Job to advise and place handicapped such As Elmer in training and therapy programs to enable them to Job he was Given a Complete physical and took a Battery of educational and vocational few learning facilities were available for the rehabilitation Counselor usually had to place a client in a Job they could handle or arrange for on the Job training with a local the rehabilitation program put Elmer in the Hospital for several months where he was fitted with a his Counselor arranged for on the Job training with Hite and sons in body and fender Smith trained and worked at Hite and sons for three finishing the Job training in business was Slack at so i left to go to Shaws in explained he remained with Shaw motors until 1942 and the outbreak of world War rejected by the Smith went to the Curtiss right air plane factory in where he was a layout Man on steel construction of the War the doors for bomb fuselages and ribs for wings gave Way to peacetime pursuits As world War ii Elmer returned to Pennsylvania to find Thomas Chevrolet hired Elmer in their Auto body shop in he worked for be trained to work for himself so he could work at his own being Able to rest at after a five month a position opened at the Pennsylvania rehabilitation Center in Johnstown for Elmer to begin training in the upholstery for twelve months Elmer lived at the rehab Center during the returning to Bedford for the weekends with his Elmer completed the 16 month course in 12 coming out with the highest score Ever on the upholstery competency with arrangements made by the Elmer set up his own business in the basement of his the bar purchased a sewing machine and several other pieces of equipment needed to establish his now Elmer has a Large shop next to his Smith is and his business is i get a lot of people who come Back to have other pieces for Ive done a chair and a Couch for this explained
