No Shock ifs a Kim had events followed the script Kim Jong ii would be introducing his oldest son Kim Jong Nam 39, As his designated successor to the workers party Assembly just As his father had at the last Assembly 30 years ago. But the younger Kim was caught using a fake passport to make an unauthorized visit to Tokyo Disneyland and this proved to be a career killer. Instead the senior Kim this week introduced his youngest son Kim Jong in to North koreans As their Likely next dictator by making him a four Star general. Even by the secretive standards of North Korea the Quot Young general Quot As the local Media have taken to calling him is a mystery. He is believed to be 27. He is known to have spent at least a year at a Swiss boarding school. And he attended a military Academy named after his Grandfather in Pyongyang. Only two photos of him Are known to exist in the West one taken by the family Cook when he was quite Young. Nothing in his skimpy resume suggests that he is even remotely qualified to head a Small and economically failing state especially one with nuclear weapons and a belligerent foreign policy. His father had the Benefit of 14 years As an understudy to his father Kim ii Sung the founder of the North korean state when the great Leader died in 1994. The dear Leader s need to Groom a successor took on a sudden urgency two years ago when he suffered an guest editorial apparent stroke. He has not looked at All Well since. North Korea watchers say that in addition to his senior military Post Young Kim will probably also be named to a couple of political posts. They describe his Elevation As a tryout a sort of probation. Vith the military watching carefully. Passing a military dictatorship Down through three generations will be something of a first in modern history. Perhaps to ensure that the family business remains in the family Kim also promoted Liis sister Kim Kyong Hui 64, to four Star general s rank. She is married to Jang song Thaek the vice chairman of the National defense commission the most Power fill institution in North Korea. If Kim is ailing his sister and her husband Are ideally situated to act As regents to give their Nephew time to grow into the Job. That May prove to be Tricky since after 62 years of one family Rule there has to be a lot of pent up ambition in North Korea s military and poetical hierarchies. Young Kim could effectively remove one potential rival by naming older brother Kim Jong Nam the ceo of Pyongyang Disneyland. A Scripps Howard news service soaring cohabitation l ast week the . Census reported that the number of cohabiting couples jumped from 6.7 million in 2009 to 7.5 million in 2010. Why census blamed the recession Quot a higher percentage of men in newly formed couples in 2010 did not work last year 24 percent than men in newly formed couples in 2009 14 percent Quot sounds plausible. However cohabitation has soared in Good times and bad times by an Unbe Heable 17-fold since 1960 when Only 430,000 couples were living together. This is an Issue for which clergy Bear some responsibility. It May be the greatest sin of the Church. Clergy marry 86 percent of couples yet few ask couples to move apart. Scripture is Clear. Quot flee fornication Quot Paul warns i Cor. 7 18. What is cohabitation but fornication raised to the 100th Power the outcome of sin can never be Good. As my wife and i reported in our Book. Living together m5 the risks amp answers Many couples live together to test the relationship for marriage. Big mistake. While two thirds of couples who marry Are living together 1.4 million what happened to the other 6 million most broke up sadly discovering that cohabitation is a trial divorce not a trial marriage. Many experience Quot premarital divorce Quot that is so painful millions never do marry. The number of never mar ried americans has tripled from 21 million in 1970 to 63 million in 2008, six times population Grov rth. Result the marriage rate fell by 51 percent. However couples who marry after Liing together have better marriages because they know what to expect right no. That s a myth. A Penn state study reports that such couples Are 61 percent More Michael Mcmanus a ethics amp religion Likely to divorce than those who remained apart the Christian Norm for 20 centuries. Another Penn state study found that even living together for 30 Days diminished the Quality of the relationship. Only about a tenth of cohabiting couples build a lifelong marriage. My question for pastors is simple Why Are you silent on this Issue wily not use these numbers to make a Case for remaining apart while few cohabiting couples Are in Church their parents Are there and Don t know what to say to adult children who want to cohabit. Two thirds of teens think cohabitation is a Good idea. They must hear evidence of its harm. When cohabiting couples ask pastors to marry them Why not insist that they move apart until the wedding that s the stand of pastor Jeff Meyers of Christ lutheran Church in Overland Park Kan. When couples claim they can t afford to move apart he replies Quot sue we have widows in this Church who would love to have you move in until your four out of five move apart and not one woman asked for the name of a widow she would rather move Home for several months or in with girl friends. Fortunately there is a much better Way for couples to test the relationship. As Paul urged Quot test everything. Hold onto the Good. Avoid every kind of evil i thess 5 21-2 Quot cohabitation is evil. That s what a 90 percent failure rate is before or after the wedding. My wife and i have trained thousands of couples in healthy marriages to be Quot Mentor Cou pies Quot for churches who help couples take a premarital inventory a detailed questionnaire which asks them to respond to 150-plus statements like these 1. I am concerned that my partner is More of a spender than i am. 2. When we Are having a problem my partner often refuses to talk about it. Mentors can then react to exactly what the couple has said about themselves. I might say Quot George if she asks a question and you Don t know what to say Don t walk out of the room. Ask her Quot can we talk about this after dinner Quot that gives you time to develop an answer. Any couple married 20 years can offer that sort of Wisdom or common sense. Thus churches can help couples test their relationship appropriately. Furthermore groups of churches can come together across denominational lines and require All couples getting Mai tied in that City to take an inventory and be mentored. My wife and i have helped 10,000 clergy in 229 cities create a Community marriage policy with a conscious goal to Cut their divorce rate. An Independent study of the first 114 cities found that divorce rates fell by 17.5 percent on average. Equally important cohabitation rates fell by one third compared to similar cities in that state. Marriage rates Are rising. If clergy cooperate they can fight cohabitation and create a new marriage this Bedford township Veteran will celebrate his 90th birthday on oct. 6. Harold c. Diehl served in the . Army air corps As an air Mechanic from 1942 through 1945. He was bom in the dutch Comer area of Bedford township near Imle town a son of the late Lloyd e. And a. Mary Bee Gle Diehl. His three Brothers Allen deceased Raymond and Merle also served during this War time period Harold and his wife Mildred Hyde Are the parents of four sons Terry Larry j. Rodney and Robert. They submitted the on ifs fun in my youth there were three dates that were always marked on my Calendar. The Northern appalachian Craft festival in the Spring meant watching the legendary bed races. The great Bedford fair had me spending much of the week either on the Midway or Manning the 4-h building. And after the Start of school darkened my life the lights began to brighten again with the Fali foliage festival. Each of these activities Drew my friends and i like Moths to a Candle As we Rode our bikes downtown. As Young boys we weren t too impressed by the Handiwork of the talented craftspeople lining Juliana and Penn streets. A Little More of interest to us was Fri delicious Floii and drinks like the pulled pork sandwiches and fresh Apple cider. Of and the smells that go along with them that Hung like a Mouth watering Cloud across the Square. For a car Buff like me the biggest draw has always been the fall foliage festival s antique car Parade. My neighbor or. Gordon always led the Parade carrying miss Pennsylvania in the Back of his Ford Model t. And with the Bedford elks basically in my backyard walking Down to see the cars before the Parade was probably the highlight of every year into High school. Over the years i met dozens of car owners and even hitched rides in the Parade a number of times. Sometimes the cars were owned by friends like or. Gordon s Packard driven by my father sometimes they were people my folks knew like Bob foor and his classic rumble seat Ford with me seated Between his daughter Sand sometimes they were people i met just that column a by Sam Fiorani morning like the Keggs and their Beautiful 57 Studebaker Golden Hawk. No matter who was there and whether or not i was in the Parade the cars were great and the people were Friendly. After i left Bedford i still returned almost every year for the festival and usually during the antique car Parade weekend. But As the years have passed i be come to notice that fewer and fewer locals show up to enjoy the activities. Granted fall foliage pulls in thousands of people who would not otherwise visit our Little Burg but the Small inconvenience of the crowds is outweighed by the Chance to run into someone you Haven t seen in Ages. And seeing locals has become More important to me than the Parade that i still hold dear. Usually the Only people we meet downtown Are the few people we be previously planned to see. Our Core group of friends knows that Well be in for the festival but the serendipity of seeing a former teacher or neighbor or classmate always brings out the kid in us like finding a Surprise gift under the tree at Christmas. I fear that the locals May have lost excitement for the festival that i once had As a kid. My love of the fall foliage festival and Bedford in general reemerged a few years ago when we were staying at the newly opened Bedford Springs. Meeting some visitors one october afternoon the couple asked me As a former local what there was to see and do in Bedford. I was shocked that they had come to Bedford during fall foliage and did t know about the event i immediately directed them into town. Quot you can t miss it Quot i explained. Yet Many of my former neighbors miss it every year. Of they might Stop by for a moment or two after Church on sunday morning before the big crowds arrive but it s seeing the people that is a big part of the experience. Hopefully this year you la take the time in the Middle of a saturday and walk downtown. Reconnect with some people you Haven t seen in a while. Maybe even meet someone new. Perhaps even getting to ride with them in their 1957 Studebaker. It could happen. Daily thought thought accept godly advice and instruction for it will bless you with Wisdom for life. Scripture listen to advice and accept instruction and in the end you will be Wise. Proverbs 19 20 prayer dear god if Ever in life i needed Wisdom it is now for the Day and hour i am living in is surely perilous times. Help me lord to seek godly Wisdom and instruction through Reading the Bible praying and developing a healthy relationship with you. Thank you lord for making it possible for me to have the Wisdom i need for today in Jesus name i Pray. Amen.
