Bulldog Backpack program gains non profit status by Erin Thompson Gazette staff writer a program that supplies meals to Claysburg Kimmel students on weekends recently gained non profit status organizers said recently. The bulldog Backpack program gained 501 c 3 status through the Christ lutheran Church in Claysburg according to Terri Lingenfelter a coordinator for the program. Christ lutheran Church is part of the Claysburg East Freedom mini8terium, which approached the school last year about starting the program Lingenfelter said. Through the bulldog Backpack program teachers place prepacked bags with two breakfasts two lunches two fruits and two snacks in the backpacks of children in need on Friday afternoon to last the weekend. The program started just before thanksgiving with about 70 students and has since grown to nearly too. Since the program is fuelled solely by donations a we knew we were going to have to seek outside Grants and most of those Grants require nonprofit status a Lingenfelter said. The program costs about $17 per student per month to sustain organizers estimate. With the 501 c 3 Federal tax exempt status a i believe that businesses who May not have made donations in the past May be More willing to a Lingenfelter said. The program started with a $1,000 donation from the Ministeri us and has since operated with other donations of food and Money from the Community. A we really have some Good support from the Community a Lingenfelter said. A Community members businesses and churches have been extremely generous in providing food financial support and workers to pack the bags and so since its inception the program has also gotten a positive response from teachers who have done fundraisers for the program and from parents. Lingenfelter said the program recently sent evaluations Home in the students backpacks. A the parents who responded had very positive comments.
