Human rights commission continues work on ordinance a briefs by Wendy Holdren Register Herald reporter Beckley human rights commission has drafted a new ordinance that would include sexual orientation and gender identity As protected classes against discrimination As Well As allow the organization to have an investigator instead of an executive director. Chairman Bob Baker said the draft is still in the rough stages and members of the commission must approve the amendments before they Are presented to Beckley common Council. Quorum was not met at wednesdays human rights commission meeting so the changes could not be approved. Council rejected a Volt in november on the changes to include sexual orientation and gender identity As protected classes after an outcry from Many members of the religious Community. But supporters of la Btu rights have continued to support the amendment and with the supreme courts recent decision to allow same sex couples to marry in All 50 states these supporters Hope to see the amendment brought before Council again. Baker said the other amendment which would allow the commission to have an investigator will help the commission function.
