Kimberly Lockett an Oak Hill High school senior and Lucienne Lester a Midland Trail High school senior petitioned the Board in March to reconsider Basing selection of valedictorians and salutatorian on numeric averages. Both carry 4.0 Grade Point averages but each was excluded from the top two spots in their classes even though their Grade Points put them at the top. The students argument a sustained Over several weeks a was against a policy that relies on numeric averages to break ties in achievement determination. Approved beginning this year the policy discriminated against Lockett and Lester because they had been using the Grad Point average As a goal in their academic careers the students contended. The policy should have begun with freshmen and been phased in they argued most recently at the april 17 meeting when the Board decided to review it but not make immediate policy changes.
