Grant coinsurance real state and investments f it Whitley building it abbr Maine. These Are prosperous and Busy Days for the Little Village of Seal Harbor. Though less pretentious than its Sisters Northeast and bar Harbor it possesses a Cinderella like Charm All of its own a a Charm that seems to act Only of Kindred spirits and brings to the place a class of people that Are thoroughly congenial. As yet there has been no Call for a policy Force marauders and disturber of the peace Hng headed to More productive Fields by a coterie of citizens interested in the welfare of the place. There is a Little peculiarity about Seal Harbor in respect to its abodes of business. In truth it does seem almost a sacrilege that the giants of gain and loss should penetrate to this Sylvan Retreat close at the Gates of Eden. And whether actuated by this or some other motive Many of their haunts have been so designed that the uninitiated might take the fish Market for an artist s studio or the real estate office for a Tea House. Quite a considerable building and remodelling has been going on of late much of it done by Asa Hodgkins amp sons. Or. Hodgkins senior who carries on most of the business in that Vicinity is highly esteemed and his judgment on All architect Tual subjects is relied upon. Just now the foundations Are being Laid for an addition to the Anchorage the summer Home of Admiral and mrs. Schuyler Cronin shield. The name Quot Anchorage Quot strikes one As particularly appropriate applied As in the instance to the abode of ?. Retired naval officer. The addition is to be at the West Side 35x40, two and one half stories and detached except for the piazzas which will be adjoining. This will give a Good sized living room on the first floor two sleeping rooms above and three on the third floor. The end fronting upon the water is to be made mostly of Glass and will command an extensive View. Back of this at the Northwestern Corner will be the Bath toilet and coat rooms. A Piazza 8 feet Broad will surround the whole. This addition is being made mainly for the accommodation of guests As the Cronin Shields prefer the cosy rooms of the original House where they have Pertt so Many Happy years. Twenty years ago in Seal i Arbor s Pioneer Days or. Hodgkins built the Anchorage its site being on a Bluff amid Large boulders. The House suits its surroundings to a remarkable degree and is an Ideal spot Quot far from the maddening within Are Many Odd and curious things that the inmates have picked up in their Long sojourn abroad for it has been six years since the Crowninshield spent a season at Seal Harbor. The last year Lias been spent in Italy and in Lance in both of which places the weather was extremely cold. From the former place Admiral Crowninshiel Brou it a picture of the Madonna and child which he jokingly terms Quot the lost Raphael Quot and which is an exact copy of the one in tic louvre. Another interesting souvenir is the photograph of King Oscar of Sweden presented at the time when Admiral Crowninshield was his guest at Inch. In speaking of his Assumption of the Crown the Monarch said Quot they took me away from my ship to make me King and now i cannot go to a any Admiral Crowninshield takes his love for the Quot briny deep Quot from a Long line of sea faring ancestors Quot sea Kings Quot the norsemen called them. He is a graduate of the United states naval Academy and was attached to the steam Sloop Ticonderoga. Participating in both attacks on fort Fisher. During the Spanish american War he was chief of the Bureau of the War department and at the time of the Coronation ceremonies in England was in command of the flagship. As an interesting memento of the occasion they have framed the Long official looking invitation. Mrs. Crowninshield is a woman of High culture and a charming hostess. Her family is an old one tracing direct descent from governor Bradford of Massachusetts. Mrs. Crowninshield has inherited from this line a Strong literary tendency and is an authoress of some Little note. She intends writing two novels during the summer Many anecdotes for which she picked up while abroad. Speaking of the hot wind which was quite prevalent last week she said that it disinclined her for concentration of any kind reminding her strongly of the italian a Story is told that during the life of this hot blasting wind a Man killed his wife. He was not prosecuted however and it was thought nothing of because the wind is supposed to have so blighting effect upon the human mind. The Crowninshield Are Welcome visitors at Seal Harbor this summer and their Long Abs nce in foreign climes and amid Gilt and scenery has not disqualified them for the beauties of the Maine coast. Another House which the Hodgkins firm has just completed is the summer Honie of or. And mrs. James Rhodes of Boston. The House sets among the Trees High on a Promontory and drives its name Quot Ravens left Quot from the location. The Entrance fronting the Road is a porch paved with Brick. The Hall is of moderate size and opening from it is the den a cozy room in shades of Brown. The living room is Large and commands a Fine View of the water. Opening from it is a covered Piazza with Glass at one Side. The dining room connects with the living room by folding doors and it too opens out upon a cozy porch. At the Back of the House Are the Kitchen laundry and wine closet. On the second floor Are four Chambers and two Bath rooms. Mrs. Rhodes room is at the Southwest Side. It is a Large airy apartment with seven windows and the View from each in turn seems More entrancing than the last. The third floor contains three Chambers and a Bath. All the plumbing quite an extensive Job was done by William Pierce. An Odd feature of the inside finish is the wainscoting which has been stained Black setting off to Good advantage the lighter details. Most of the furniture has been sent from Boston. The Rhodes family came last week their arrival having been somewhat delayed by the death of mrs. Rhodes sister at Atlantic City n. J. In july their son and his wife or. And mrs. D. P. Rhodes will pay a visit to the new Home. Or. C. A. Herter and family of new York arrived the end of the week and will be at their Beautiful summer Home which was completed last year. The Heaters had been visitors at Seal Harbor for a number of years but it was not until the Spring of 02 that plans for the cottage were made. Once started the work was rushed and the House was ready for occupancy in just ninety Days from the Date of beginning. Though Large and built on High ground quite 240 feet above sea level the House does not stand out obtrusive by but blends harmoniously with its surroundings. The approach on the front is very striking the Road passing Between two huge boulders and curving up to the Entrance before which is a Stone Terrace circled about with Bush honeysuckle now in full Bloom. The Interior of the House is quite in keeping. The rooms Are finished with exposed beams and each is unique in color and arrangement. The scheme of colouring was designed by or. Herter s brother who is an artist. The Hall is done in Green and red the living room in Brown and the dining room in Blue and Gray. Mrs. Herter s apartments Are on the first floor As also Are the children s. This last is a Dainty room with two Little White Beds the prevailing tone being Green. Another House built this year and now ready for occupancy is that of or. And mrs. J. Andrew Henshaw. The Hen Sliawa Are came Rili a people and spent last season at Seal . Miss Cora How was the a Chilel of their House. Edward b. Mears cottages for rent or for office bar Harbor Maine. Boothby. But for his leadership it would have been impossible for the idea to have become an institution and old Home week would have been an unknown feature in our state. For months mayor Boothby has been talked of As a possible candidate for governor in 1904 and from All Over the state his friends Are sendin amp him letters strongly urging Hini to become a candidate. He so far has not Given them. The least in Touraj ement but he is at this time More talked about than Ever. The courteous reception which every caller at his office is sure to receive has Given him a popularity which few Public men achieve and of which he May Well be proud. Class 03. Interesting graduating exercises Casino. At the has made his Mark. C 1. Boothby now mayor of Portland May be governor. Among the prominent men of Maine is Frederick i. Hooch by of i , who is Well known in every Section of the state. For he has stood in the front ranks of leading Railroad men of m line and though he is far from being a a he was a Railroad Man before the present splendid system was undeveloped or even thought of. During the past thirty live years Many and striking changes have taken place. A mayor Boothby did not seek the office 01 mayor but his services were requested by his party when a Leader was greatly needed. He consented to the nomination made a spirited canvass and is now serving his third term As mayor of Portland. Since entering upon his duties to the present time he has worked hard for the interests of the City and has been a Safe conscientious Leader when a More Radical Man might have blundered seriously. As president Cleveland said he was confronted by a condition and not a theory. One of the Best illustrations of his Wise and business like administration is Boothby Square. It was a plague spot before he undertook to change it and today the value of property in that Vicinity is rapidly advancing. The important department of Public works has received his closest attention and supervision and the effect of his business training and ability can be seen even by one who is not in a position to observe daily the work of the depart ment. He has a Way of speaking his mind on Public occasions no matter who is hit. His Public papers Deal in a very refreshing Way with Public matters and from his first moment of taking office he has been willing to take the Public into his Confidence. There was some objection before col. Boothby s election As to the selection of a noted Railroad Man but All now agree that the Choice of the Republican City was a Wise one. He has used i influence to Advance the interests of the City and yet he has not forgotten the great corporation with which he has been so Long and honorable interested and has retained his connection with the Maine Central but no one has Ever complained that he has neglected a duty. The old Home week movement in Maine owes its life and soul to mayor the first notes of commencement were struck last sunday night when the baccalaureate address was delivered at st. Saviours episcopal Church by Rev. Stephen a Green or. Green took for his text Quot he that dwell eth in love dwell eth in god and god in him Quot and gave a very interesting discourse. Monday night at the Casino the graduating exercises were held. The Hall was festooned with Evergreen and the stage decorated with potted plants and Palms. Suspended at the front was a Banner bearing the class motto Quot Finis coronal the stage was occupied by the teachers a timbers of the school Board superintendent and Rev. A. M. Macdonald when the class numbering nine marched through the Hall marshalled by Carl Reynolds 04 and took their places. After a selection by the Casino orchestra prayer was offered by or. Mac on Ald.
