Those sent to the province when the Puritan John Hart was governor and his second wife Sarah Howe. James Duke 6th and his wife Rebecca somervell Duke had a Large family of sons find daughters from whom most of the old Calvert county families descend. I one son or. Alexander Duke moved to a history of the Gantt family would incomplete without some mention of Croome the Beautiful old colonial estate in Prince Georges county that was both the Home of the Clagett and Gantt families and which estate is still in the Possession of their descendants. The ancient records of Prince George county for the year 1671 state without gov the Gantt arms ing the exact Date that the 1,100 acres which constitutes Croome was surveyed for Christopher Ousby on the West Side of the a Tuxen River on the South Side of 8t. Charles Branch at Abd. Spanish Oak the Side of a Branch near the land of Charles Brooks. The possessors tre given?950 acres Chaa. Ridgely orphans 150 acres Francis piles. Croome was the Home of Richard Clagett bought him at an Early Date. Capt. Taos. Clagett of England settled at i00arils, Calvert county soon after the first settlement of the county and named the place leonards after the Parish in which he had lived in England. Richard Clagett was his son who lived in Prince George county and who bequeathed Croome to hts son Rev. Samuel Clagett whose wife was Elizabeth Gantt. From them the estate passed into the Possession of their son re Rev. Thomas John Claggett whose wife was his Cousin miss Mary Gantt. Bishop Claggett was Rector of . Thomas Church Talbot county and at bus death was burled in the private graveyard of Croome. At this time a portion of the estate was divided off and Given to the Clergyman youngest daughter Elizabeth Claggett who called the place Chestnut Hill and who lived and died there. One of Bishop Claggette a daughters. Priscilla married col. John h. Chew of Calvert county. Through her Croome passed into the Possession of her son the late Rev. John ii. Chew for Many years a member of the standing committee of the diocese of Maryland. Ills children still own the estate As Well As Chestnut Nill. On Christmas Day of the year 1856 the old Croome House burned to the ground a tragic conclusion to the festivities of the reason. It was a Large comfortable Frame House with Broad Halls and spacious apartments and built from the Timber Cut in far away times from the adjacent Forest. The nails used were made say hand. The residence was approached an Avenue of splendid Elm Trees and its outward Beauty was in keeping with the spirit of hospitality and culture that characterized the Home life. In theatre a great Deal of Tine old furniture heirlooms in the 1 Gantt and Clagett families was destroyed. In spite of the Law in Maryland against the desecration of Graves the old burying j place of the Gantt family near Whites Landing on the a Tuxen River has suffered irreparably at the hands of those careless or ignorant of the silent but recognised rights of the dead. Those purchasing the property desired to remove the ancient family monuments and atones and finding these too heavy to lifted had them broken mallets thrust into carts and hauled to the River into which they were thrown. In Calvert county in the family graveyard of the old Holdsworth House three Miles out of Prince Frederick owned later the Gantt Are several tombstones erected in memory of members of the latter family. My messes. Editors James Caldwell and Elisabeth Alexander his wife came from county Tyrone in Northern Ireland in 1769. They landed at Havre de Grace md., and moved to Baltimore. The family crossed the mountains and settled at Wheeling in 1772, two year before the Zanes. They took up the Broad Bottom lands sooth of Wheeling Creek being about twelve Huldred acres in what is now the City of Wheeling. James Caldwell was married to Elisabeth in county Tyrone Ireland in 1752. She was bom in 1787 and he in 1724. James Caldwell in 1777 was commissioned Patrick Henry governor of Virginia one of the gentlemen justices for Ohio county Virginia to a member of the first court for what was then a very Exten Alve territory. He sat upon the court which i believe was the first court in the Valley of Ohio and the first organised government West of the alleghenies in Virginia. This court of which Jamea Caldwell was a member organized the militia recommending the officers to the governor for commission. The militia engaged in the defense of fort Henry at Wheeling against British troops and Indiana and in various other military enterprises sea list the British and their Indian allies. James Caldwell was a civil officer but in that capacity aided the revolution being probably too old to enter actively into military service. The records of the county court of Ohio county show this service respecting militia and these records abundantly furnish to my mind sufficient evidence to have subjected him to a conviction for High treason had the revolution not been successful. I understand that a number of bus female descendants have been admitted in societies of the daughters of the revolution and of daughters of the american revolution upon proof of his services. His oldest son. John built fort Henry and was wounded daring one of the sieges but the father was not in the fort being upon some property of his in what is now the Oil Region in Tyler county some 40 or 50 Miles from fort Henry. He was driven out from his Plantation after one of these sieges one of the Gurty family and band of indians who burned Down his improvements and sent him a fugitive with his wife Over the present Pennsylvania line. His wife was carried behind him on a Pillow. I youngest son Joseph Caldwell was born shortly after this occurrence while his parents were refugees. The father James Caldwell finally settled in Wheeling and died there. The House that he built and in which he lived was torn Down about three years ago. The Frame and some of the joists were Black Walnut logs and much of the Timber was what is now considered very precious Wood. The heavy Timber was fastens together with wooden pins and All the nails used in the House were hand made a Blacksmith and resembled Horseshoe nails. James Caldwell was for Many years prudent Hustle of the county court of thai City and his name is attached to a great Deal of the county records. James Caldwell and his wife. James Caldwell was a grandson or great grandson of sir James Caldwell baronet who resided at and owned Castle Caldwell on the North Shore of lower Lake erne in county Fermanagh in Ireland. The title is now in abeyance and Castle Caldwell although still known that name Baa passed into other hands than the Caldwell it having been inherited some female members whose descendants got rid of their Patrimony. The old Castle was not a Large Altair As i understand. But is a picturesque ruin on the North Shore of i Power Lake erne and is a Railroad station on a Railroad running from Ennis Killeen to Druzgal on the West coast of Ireland. Sir James Caldwell was crested baronet King William of blessed memory. His Grandfather came from Ireland with Cromwell from Ayrshire. The Caldwell had three Coats of arms. The Virginia family who derived their name from the cold Well or Fountain upon the estate they owned in the Firth of Perth in Scotland purchased from one of the Douglass.
