Or Barnes minister for railways this afternoon received a deputation representing metropolitan and country Ches of the National federation to urge that action to taken to overcome the shortage throughout the slate. Sir Alexander Peacock in introducing s the deputation said that a big loss was Tak my place in Tho Revenue and serious in convenience was being caused by the True shortage. Tho position had become very acute and he looked Forward with a Good Deal of misgiving to the Winter. Ballarat and Bendigo had no firewood supplies. Senator Plain and Ajr c. Tho department to Day was the Sambas when no complaint was Madei r the sugar agreement debate in Federal parliament or tudors criticism. Reply by or. Hughes. Melbourne tuesday. In the House of representatives to Day or. Tudor moved the adjournment of the House to discuss the retail Price of sugar. He said that he approved to the agreement that had recently been before the House. The. Prime minister had said that at the conference at which thru agree ment was arrived at he represented the consumer but in reply to a question i e admitted that he did not know what the increased Cost to the retailer would be. There was no mention at the conference of the retail Price and he objected to 6d per Pound being fixed. The producer and the Miller got Between them Only id per Pound extra yet Tho increase to tic consumer was to be 2id per la. That was the position that the people wanted to have explained to them. It was not on account of the agreement that the Price had gone up i authority for that being Tho prime minis Ter himself. He said that it was necessary to emphasise that Tho increase to 6d was mainly duo not to the contract made with the Queensland government to Purchase at 3o/6/8, but to the Purchase at a High Rire of 100,000 tons of foreign sugar which had to be imported to meet the deficiency in local Supply that would exist at the end of the season. No one objected to an in crease in Tho Price of any commodity hat was necessary to give the producer fair and reasonable conditions. They did not object to paving the extra one Penny per Pound to the grower or the 18/6 per ton to the colonial Huger refining cos., but that wits equal to Only one tenth of a Penny per ton and Tho people wanted to know How Tho extra charge to them was accounted for. It was said that it was to pay Tho Cost of Tho imported sugar but it j should have been possible in lid. Or aug list last to have been Able m a. To with tit 10 per cent., what australian require ments for this year would however that provision had not been made and it was nut fair now that the extra Price should have to be charged. It was a charge that would fall heavily on the poorer classes in the Community. Prymk mini Bokr a statement. Or i 0 he s made a statement indicating the position. Should the Mil Laquin refinery secure sufi Hiuet local sugar to make 20,000 tons of refined sugar at an estimated Cost of 3b per ton a profit of 7/10/ per ton would accrue to the govern ment or 150,000 which will reduce the debit balance to 70,000. The position As to Price summed up. From the figures Given it will be clearly seen 1 that the Price now charged for sugar to tile Public is very much lower than the Price paid by the Commonwealth for sugar 2 that this High priced sugar is the Only sugar available for the nest four months 3 that the Commonwealth will make a loss of nearly 1,000,000 by Selling sugar at go. And 4 that it can Only afford to do so if it acquire tic Queensland crop at 3o/6 8, pools it with the foreign sugar and Sells at a uniform Price. It is estimated that the next seasons Queensland and new South Wales sugar crop will not exceed 145,000 tons. As the yearly consumption is Over 280,000 tons it is obvious that further purchases of foreign sugar must be made in order to Supply tie Community until the 1920 Cron is available. The amount necessary will be anything from 110,000. To 130,000 tons the Price to be paid for this is quite problematical. If however the Price paid enable the Commonwealth to sell sugar at less than 6di a la after March 1 next it will most certainly do so. It is obvious from the facts Given that there is. And can he. No alternative to a. Increased Price for retail sugar the Price of 3o/6/8 is the lowest at present ruling for sugar in any part of the world and this despite the fact that australian sugar is raised by White labor and the wages paid to the work ers Are the highest in the world. If the grower got even one half of the worlds Price to he would receive More than the Price lie is willing to take. He does this in return for a fixed Price for three years. The Industry is stabilised and he is encouraged to increase his output. If the Commonwealth does not give him this guarantee he will of course he entitled of ask that to shall get some thing approaching the worlds parity for the coming seasons crop. In All the circumstances i do not think the Price is 100 High. Wages which absorb no less than so per cent of the Cost of production have increased very much and the workers Are. Owing to the increased Cost of living and other reasons demanding a further increase. Australians have no reason then to Coin to Plain that now when As a result of conditions Over which neither Thev nor the Queensland growers have any control the consequence of War. Droughts cyclones they have to pay More for their sugar than Liev have done for lie last five years. The australian people will get sugar cheaper than and other people in the world and they will do this because the australian grower gets loss than any other grower in the world at the present time. The increase in the Price from Aid to go per la. Is caused by 1 the increased return necessary of bal Ance the Price of foreign augur and avoid still heavier loss 21 id. Per la. Of the increase paid to sugar Industry ii id. Per la. In Purchase of foreign sugar to meet consumption 41 the increased amount allowed to retailers or Moro than cd per la. No one can say what Price foreign sugar will he in one or two years time but there Are Manv Good reason for believing that the Price of sugar will not fall to pre War level during the next three years. On the facts tile retail Price charged for Secir is not Only justified but is 4d. A la. Less than the Cost to the Commonwealth government. He contended that the agreement proposed to he made with the Queensland government is n Good one in the.
