Decline to 13 cents letter gives facts and figures tells needs of local institution Kern county Chad rent a shelter Bakersfield calif., nov. 23, 1320 editor the Bakersfield californian. Bakersfield California. Dear sir the directors of the children a shelter Appeal to the generous hearted people of Kern county through you for support of the shelter for the ensuing year and ask you to solicit funds through the medium of your newspaper for that purpose during the period from thanksgiving to Christmas. As is Well known this shelter is a local institution caring for the helpless Little ones from every part of the county in need of its Aid and it to upon the residents of the county and those having business interests in the county that the shelter has to depend for its maintenance. A year ago we asked for assistance and the people responded splendidly to our Call. At this time our Treasury is almost empty. We have not sufficient funds to meet the november Bills and pay our taxes. We Are compelled to ask for a Large amount of Money this time namely $10 000 the reason for this is obvious. Living expenses were never so High As they have been during the present year. The Cost of maintaining the institution for the past ten months has been $8534.44?or an average of $853.44 per month. The number of children in the Home has varied from thirty two to fifty. The building must be painted. It has stood so Long that the paint has dried out. The installation of some method of heating the House is imperative. The Only heat in the building aside from the Kitchen Range is from a heating stove in the Assembly room and a Small Heater in the a Sunshine room for those who May be ill or afflicted with minor contagion. There is no heat in the dining room the Halls or upstairs. We had hoped to make these improvements out of the funds provided for this year but owing to the increase in living expenses we were compelled to forego them. The last official investigation of the shelter was made on july 31, 1920, by a representative of the 9tate Board of control. Mise g. 8. Orcutt r. Children a agent. We have just received a copy of her report to the state Board. The following excerpts from it will be of interest to the Public a there i6 no doubt that the Kern county children a shelter is maintaining a very Good work on a limited scale. At present they Are hampered with an old style building inadequate space and limited accommodations for Comfort but with All these inconveniences apparently Good results Are obtained. A the personal Hygiene diet Aries education and medical attendance compare favourably with other institutions of a similar Type. Apparently every Effort is made to maintain the shelter on an economical basis. A the enrolment throughout the past Winter was 48 but on the Day of this visit Only 39 children were at the Home 7 of these were Nursery tots. The age limits Are girls 3 to 18 boys 3 to 12. This ruling however is not strictly adhered to As at present there Are two girls and one boy attending High school and it is the Hope of mrs. Coolbaugh to keep Thise children until they have finished their education and Are Able to establish themselves in the world. The entire group attends the Public school and at the close of the last term every child in the Home with the exception of one was promoted. A these children Are Given some instruction in both vocal and instrumental music. The oldest girl in the institution is at present being trained to become a teacher of the piano and three or four others Are receiving lessons. One of the instructors of music in Bakersfield is donating this service and is. Apparently taking great interest in these girls. Four of the older ones form a quartet and have been asked to sing on a number of occasions outside of the Home. This phase of their education is particularly worthy of the Board of directors in behalf of the children of the shelter will appreciate the Aid you lend and the space you devote to the worthy cause of providing Means for taking care of the shelter for the coming year.
