The Street Parade included a number interesting features none More so than the representation the several states the Union by As Many attract Stively and similarly attired Little girl from the children a Home who under the supervision superintendent Arm Trong occupied a decorated platforms Wagon drawn by six horses. The exhibit presented a very pretty appearance. An equal number Little misses the Public schools airily Clad in White occupied another platform Wagon and were a no less attractive feature the Parade and the presence which is due to the Public spirit and patriotism superintendent Wheaton by whose arrangement and management this pleasant feature the Parade was provided. Thou there was an amusing assemblage character representations drawn by wagons from the West end which Section town can always be relied to contribute its full share any Public occasion. We Are constrained to pass Over other features the Parade worthy notice the tout ensemble which was under the direction and guidance Deputy sheriff Carl Porter the grand marshal. Shortly following the Parade the assembled multitude repaired to the fair grounds to witness the game base Ball Between the Athens stars and the Marietta Grays the horse racing and the Sycicle contest. The game throughout elicited the most exciting interest the part the immense crowd spectators and which from its beginning was one sided in favor the a stars a the Brilliant achievements Norris in the Box and Peeples behind the Bat particularly calling out the Heartiest demonstrations applause. In the opening inning Welch and West went to first Safe hits super hit a liner to Kennedy and was Pat oat Watkins hit Safe and sent Welch across the Home plate West followed a wild throw Watkins stole second and came to third Peeples hit and scored walkers clean hit Oyer left fielders head. Peeples got out running to third and Norris lined out to Center fielder retiring the the Grays then came to the Bat Kennedy hitting Safe stole second. Mcclure batted out Mcclara hit to super and went to first Kennedy moved Down to third Beasley was batted out Curry hit Safe and Kennedy scored. The racing was in some respects the Best and most closely contested that has taken place the grounds. From shortly after noon until six clock in the evening the Speed track was occupied with one other the classes. D. Moore a Fine stallion Tilford gave an exhibition Speed in a half mile trotting dash going Over the space in one minute and eleven seconds without any urging an achievement which went to yet further strengthen the general impression that he is the finest horse his kind Ever owned in Athens county. Newton b the Athens Breeding stables trotted two single mile heats in 2.28 and 2.30$, respectively. The mixed race was specially exciting and interesting and in which there were three entries. The Etc i Cle contest. The Sycicle race which was called at Quarter to one clock attracted considerable attention. It was the first wheel race under strict association rules Ever Given the track Here which was inconveniently rough for Sycicle racing but owing to the a High Grade character Aud easy running qualities the wheels engaged in the race this obstacle was largely overcome. The entries and places assigned the contestants were As follows Connett Athens Riding a a Swift a first place Moco Marietta Riding a a Colombia a second place Green Dayton Riding a a rambler a third place a. D. Alderman Marietta Riding a a Columbia a fourth place. The last named gentleman proved an easy Winner the race which was a half mile dash in 1.43, Connett coming in a close second and Green third. Mccoy entered merely for the purpose making no the a a go and sprinted Bat a few rods. The three contestants Are All crack riders the wheel and the race was in All respects a Success. Alderman is a rider considerable experience and his fancy exhibitions in front the judges stand just before the Start were difficult but were executed in the most easy and Graceful manner. Herreid living several Miles West Athens was drowned in the Hocking a Short distance beyond the b. Amp. O. S. W. Depot Here at a Point which has for Many years been a favorite bathing place with boys and older persons As Well. There were with him at the time three other boys All younger than himself one whom started to swim across the Stream Bat who before reaching the opposite Shore heard Young Herrold who was following in his Wake cry for help and who immediately after Sank beneath the surface. Charles Pilcher who was in a boat near by Learned the casualty from the boy referred to gave the alarm and at once began search for Herrold in which he was shortly after joined by Mac. Cochran Charles Foster . Dodds Roy Pilcher Geo. Falloon and several others whom report the melancholy incident had earliest reached. A Large number our citizens were drawn to the River by the rapid spread the intelligence. An Hoar More elapsed before the body was recovered at a Point near the locality the Accident by the Aid a grappling Hook in the hands Mac. Cochran and drawn into the boat occupied by him Aud . Dodds. Immediately reaching the Shore the doctor at once resorted to proper efforts for the resuscitation the lifeless body in which he was zealously aided by drs. Alderman and Steele who by this time had arrived Aud All whom continued their efforts to restore life As Long As the remotest possibility Success remained. Life was doubtless extinct before the attempt at restoration had begun. Yonng Herrold was employed in the grocery store Jeff Herrold near the Hocking Valley depot and to whose House his remains were conveyed and subsequently taken to the Home his parents in the country. He was a youth Bright intelligence and Good morals. Appalling Railroad Accident. A terrible and life destroying Accident Ocen rred the Kanawha and Michigan Railroad Early saturday morning near farm station about eight Miles this Side Charleston West a. The excursion train which was involved in the Accident contained about eighty passengers largely made up the order United american workmen Charleston and employees the k. Amp m. Road who were going to spend the fourth with their respective families at various Points the Road. There were besides quite a number other citizens aboard the ill fated train which was to run through to Columbus. The trestle where the Accident occurred is probably 80 feet High in the Center Aud about 800 feet Long. About the Center the trestle fire had in some manner broken out and had burned some the ties. These gave Way under the weight the heavy train. The engine and baggage car passed Over safely but the ties gave Way under the ashes derailing them. They jolted along some 50 feet Oyer the ties shaking the passengers up and giving them the first warning their Fate then left the trestle carrying their Load human lives to death. Fifteen persons were instantly killed and All others in the passenger coaches were More less seriously injured a number them fatally. Among the killed was . Theo. N.
