A Lustid Vila theirs mess Knorr vol. Lix to. E Athens Ohio thursday morning february 6, 1902.tragedy?Ts of Williams and Lyle brought to Athens from Gallipolis. The Athens Herkalo to. My. To. Wile recover William buried at Clark Chape and Lyle Boydy turned Over to Ohio University lamborn an alleged accomplice released. Tile last act in the fearful Gallipolis tragedy Iii which two burglars Aud would be murderers lost their lives and marshal Finsterwald was dangerously wounded has been enacted and the wrought up condition of the citizens has settled Down to Tho usual Calm. Harvey Williams lies buried in the Clarks Chapel cemetery the body of John Lyle has been turned Over to the biological department of the Ohio University and marshal Finsterwald Athens courageous officer is slowly recovering from his serious wounds at his Homo on second Street. Bob Swett and Weldon Kyle the confidants of the two dead men have returned from Gallipolis fully convinced that they do not want any More detective work. John Lam born the alleged accomplice of Williams and Lyle who was arrested and placed in jail late wednesday night has been released As the evidence found against him was not thought to be sufficiently Strong to warrant the holding of him longer Williams brought to Athens Harvey Williams one of the victims of the deadly fusillade of the officers was brought to Athens thursday afternoon and was taken at once to Hie undertaking establishment of w. A. Hibbard on Washington Street. Tho body of Williams was claimed by his relatives and awaiting the arrival of the body Here were his sister Brothers and step father Samuel Lake a Star route mail Carrier out of Athena. During thursday afternoon and night hundreds through curiosity visited the undertaking rooms for the purpose of viewing the remains of him who had attempted to carry out one of the boldest schemes Ever conceived by criminals. A Bullet which entered the brain just behind the left ear caused instant death. His face was not in the least disfigured. Clad in a suit of somber Black and resting in a Plain casket the body was seen by hundreds and Early in the evening thursday the crowd of curious minded was told to withdraw so that the members of the family and relatives of the dead Man could View the remains unmolested and without any embarrassment. It was a pathetic scene Aud when the Stepfather smoothed Back the liar from the pallid brow of the erring son the words that were formed for speech were choked a uttered in he Throat. The body of Williams remained in the undertaking establishment until afternoon Friday when Short funeral services were held in the presence of the relatives and a few friends. The body a taken to Clarks Chapel where in that quiet cemetery the remains were consigned to the Tomb. Williams was 27 years of age Aud single and for the past year he had Bee making his Home in Athens at the Home of his brother in Law John Lam born. His step father Samuel i Ake who lived a Short distance from Athens he visited occasionally. He assisted Lawborn in his photograph business Aud though he was known by Many he had but few Boon companions. He was slight of stature and an examination of the police records show he had never been arrested. It is the belief that he was led into the scheme to Rob mrs. Priestly of Gallipolis by the seductiveness of Lyle who already had served two terms in the Penitentiary. However Williams was prepared tor murder when he entered the priestly Home and it was because of his bad aim and poor revolvers that he was prevented form adding murder to the crime of burglary. Lyle was hit hard. The unclaimed body of John Lyle the second victim of the Gallipolis plot to Rob and probably murder mrs. Priestly was brought Here Friday Over the Kan Awlia amp Michigan railway. Every Effort to locate and communicate with the relatives of the dead Man proved futile. John lamborn by whom Lyle was employed Here for Over six months claimed he knew nothing of the whereabouts of the Many a relatives. He said he frequently spoke of Michigan but that Lyle never divulged the name of the town or City where they were locate. The Only thing Learned Delhi Italy about Lyle is that he had j served two terms in Tho Penitentiary for burglary and that while imprisoned at Columbus he assisted a prisoner to escape As detailed in the Story of the tragedy last week. Lyle came to Athens about six months ago from everywhere and nowhere. He was rather a smooth conversationalist and soon found employment with lamborn in ids photographic business. In Athens and surrounding towns he took orders for enlarging pictures and was successful in his w Ork. Froze utly to would suddenly disappear and would be gone for several Days when he would return and enter in the photographic business. No one knew where he went or what he did. When he first made his appearance in Athens he was pretty Well dressed but he soon became negligent of his personal appearance and during his last Mouths stay Here he looked like a Hobo who had experienced the seamy Side of life. At times he appeared to be melancholy and morose and apparently had lost All interest in himself and the rest of humanity. Immediately upon the arrival of Lyle s body hero it was taken to the basement of the East Wing of the University of which institution the body had become the property according to the due process of Law. Any unclaimed body according to the Laws it Ohio can be turned Over to any institution with a medical department. As the Ohio University had a Legal right to the body a demand for it was made and the body secured. It will be used for practical demonstrating work in the biological department and All work completed Here by the students is placed to their credit when entering any medical College for completing their course. This is the first body Ever in the Possession of the biological department and the securing of it was perfectly legitimate in every Way and its use in the interest of science will lend great Aid in the proper study of Anatomy in this department. Lyle was also slight in stature lid years of age and weighed about 1255 pounds. A few persons were admitted Friday evening when the body was removed from the casket and examined. Eight bullets had entered the body five of which would live proved fatal. He had been completely riddled with Lead which showed that the officers had been unerring in their aim. The wounded marshal. Marshal Finsterwald who was wounded twice As a result of the bloody encounter will recover and the people of Athens in whose hearts he Lias a place of the warmest admiration will be devout Ful thankful. The officers who concealed themselves in the priestly Home to await the coming of the robbers made a vigorous attack As soon us Williams and Lyle with the confidants made their appearance through till door. Lyle pushed himself through the door and Marsial Finsterwald was waiting for him. In an instant the fight was on and before Lyle could discover that to was in a trap the heavy Cane of the marshal was brought Down on his head. Lyle dodged and received Only a glancing blow causing an excoriate on of the skin above the Eye and on the left Chetek. Before the marshal could strike the second blow Lyle who carried a revolver in his hand levelled his gun and fired at Point Blank Range. From that moment the fight was on to the death an All the officers closed in on the desperadoes. Revolvers crashed wit ii terrifying rapidity and the first shot fired by Lyle struck marshal Finsterwald Iii the breast. In fifteen seconds the Battle was Over Aud the Victory was won by the dauntless officers. Williams and Lyle Lay dead marshal Finsterwald was wounded once Iii the breast and a flesh wound in Tho Arm. Deputy Man ring of Gallipolis was wounded in the hips. In All no less than Twenty five shots Wero fired. The first shot fired hit the Athens marshal and when it was supposed to be All Over and Lyle Lay on the floor apparently lifeless he with superhuman Effort and with Exien Ditre of All the Energy left in his body raised himself on his Elbow and fired at Finsterwald the to tier it of Foeth Pagso a race of time with skill.
