Atchison Daily Globe (Newspaper) - April 21, 1974, Atchison, KansasNational Library week offer birthday Bonus to local readers Atchison Library is celebrating its 95th birthday in conjunction with National Library week which is being observed nationwide today through 27. With the theme of getting it All together at your Library National Library week will be observed locally with a birthday Bonus of a free week for overdue books mrs. Jack Freund head librarian announced yesterday. Visitors Are Welcome at any time during the regular Library hours of monday through thursday 9 . To 9 . Friday 9 . To 6 . Saturday 9a.m. To 5p.m. And sunday 2 to 5 . Mrs. Freund provided the following information concerning the Library readers used the Atchison Library during 1973 935 residential subscribers and 35 non resident subscribers selected adult fiction books and non fiction juvenile fiction books numbered and non fiction of the volumes in the Library Are new books the average daily circulation is 304 inter Library Loans filled 493 requests and the Home bound service provided books. To keep up with this Large flow of books mrs. Freund had the following Library assistants mesdames Marvin Hammond Leo Danaher Mark Spencer Clark criss Neva Brown and Melvern Deckard. Sherrida Jassmann and Cindy Fehr students at Atchison High school serve part time in the children s Library. Tom Lykins and Michael Nass jr., students at Maur Hill Are also part time assistants. Library business matters Are handled by the Board of directors composed of mrs. Raymond Jones president Glenn Heider treasurer mrs. Edam Baugh Secretary mrs. Richard Bruggen Public relations Howard Crawford mrs. Richard Mize and George shuck. A group of Atchison women met at the corinthian Hall april 23, 1879, to formulate plans for a City Library. A Volunteer committee of women and one librarian maintained the Library financially by several fund raising projects. In its 95th year the Library is supported in part with tax Money state and Federal funds and contributions of local donors.
