A4 Star Beacon opinion thursday december 13,2012star f Beacon Jim Frustero put Isher Neil Frieder editor our opinion excellent schools the Ashtabula area City school District in recent years has not fared Well when it comes to academic Quality. That status is changing and it is led by three schools one of which is a primary school and the other two Are intermediate schools. Michigan primary school k-3and Saybrook and Lakeside intermediate schools have been rated excellent by the Ohio department of education. That rating does not come on a preliminary report card that could change but on the final report card. A three schools Are located on the Wade Avenue Campus. Saybrook and Lakeside schools have been renamed Erie and Superior. Further accolades were Given Erie and Superior when they were named a the most improved schools in the five county Region that includes Ashtabula Trumbull Beauga Mahoney and Columbiana counties. Only seven schools received this recognition. According to assistant superintendent Patrick Colucci Superior not Only is rated excellent but also made it into the top 2 percent of the highest achieving schools in the state. In a Star Beacon article Colucci said a these results Are a direct reflection on How hard everybody has been working Over the past five years. Parents Are starting to support the curriculum and Are getting although the is great the Community cannot lose sight the District still lags behind. As a District it met Only 12 of 29 indicators. This left the District with a continuous improvement Grade. However these three schools not Only Are a Bright Light at the end of the Tunnel they also should provide the Pride the Community needs in order to have the desire to support its schools. The Quality of Community support has a direct bearing on How schools perform. If the Community does not care the schools Likely will whither. If it cares then the sch x is Blossom. The Community and voters in particular can see their Money is not being wasted and Are More Likely to increase input and support. So it is kudos to the three schools including students employees and parents. It used to be that there were elaborate displays depicting the birth of Jesus in the big Public Park by the Ocean. In be always believed that Christmas is a major religious Holiday and the display reflected that. According to people who know More about such things than i do the Large dioramas told the Story of Jesus birth according to the gospels of Luke and Matthew. That is precisely what non Christian groups objected to. So the Santa Monica City Council responded initially by saying there would be a lottery for who got to showcase their Faith a or Lack thereof a in the Park. I did no to pay much attention to the displays last year but apparently they were enough to convince the City Council to give up on the lottery and instead adopt a Rule that there would be no religious a or anti religious a displays in the Public Park. And of course that led to a lawsuit which the City won. There May or May not be something Union Stith Susan Estrich tonal about a religious display in a Public Park but As a professor of first amendment Law its hard to see the Case that its unconstitutional not to have a display. The court agreed and this year there is no display a of the nativity scene anyway. There have been plenty of Public displays of anger Many of them directed at those terrible atheists who Are ruining Christmas. I decided a Long time ago that even though i think Christmas is a religious Holiday even though my childhood is full of memories of feeling different and lesser in places where it should not have mattered like Public school where the Rule that the girl with the longest hair got to play Mary in the school play was abandoned my year because a consider the irony a it would be wrong to have a jewish girl play Mary. I done to fight about creches in pub see Estrich Page a5 Obama could help put dad Back in family Washington one of my great Hopes for a Barack Obama administration a and thus one of my personal disappointments a was that he would use his bully pulpit to emphasize the importance of a two Parent family and especially of fathers to children a Well being. Few understand better than the president the value of a present and involved father. Much of his literary work and his examined life pertains to his own absent father. By his example he has certainly demonstrated his own commitment to parenting a and his family is a source of Pride for All americans. But the True Story of fatherless Ness in this country can to be repeat Kathleen Parker de often or forcefully enough. This is not a Story. Children who grow up without fathers tend to fall into patterns of destructive behaviour a from drug use and truancy to Early promiscuity delinquency and in too Many cases incarceration. Children raised in fatherless Homes Are also More Likely to grow up in poverty which is no fault of their mothers but is a fact. A1.so Well known is that these pathologies and consequences Are More prevalent in the african american Community where As it happens most children Are bom to unwed mothers. Is this the fault of the mothers absolutely not. Can a child raised by a single Mother Prosper sure but it is the exception including the president that proves the Rule. Here a another Rule you can to solve a problem if you to acknowledge it. Yet in today a sensitive environment to even suggest a problem that might feel offensive to some is to risk being labelled an a a Isth of some variety followed by a Public flogging. Therefore to suggest As University of Texas Law professor Lino Graglia recently did that Blacks and hispanics Are falling behind in education they tend to come from single Parent families largely mothers who Are both Potter and often uneducated is pure blasphemy. Graglia made these remarks to a bbl interviewer who noted that he himself is Black and was raised by a single Mother. Such personal anecdotes though interesting cannot be construed As arguments for single motherhood. I was raised by a single father who was a serial husband four Stepmother but Only an idiot would argue that a relentlessly dysfunctional is the Correct path to becoming a healthy adult without overt tics other see Parker Page a5doonesbury 50h0wq0itie make the Case pop for Texas Sec Epim out the Peterm / Gary Trudeau Oregon senator stays True to Constitution in my More than 60 years of reporting on Congress i have always on truly Independent members who regardless of party Are faithful to the Constitution. For years an especially insistent example has been democratic sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon. In a the Wyden Holdup a liberals firm stand a Roll Callas Tim Starks gets right to Wydenes authentic americanism As our individual liberties keep disappearing a the Oregon Democrat has become the Senate a hardest line to Cross on civil liberties issues in the National Security Arena. A he has been among a Small handful of democratic senators seeking the Obama administrations Legal justification for the targeted killing of . Citizens suspected of being overseas terrorists requests he said have gone unfulfilled a , nov. 28. And when the utterly misnamed Patriot act was up for reauthorization in 2006, Wyden voted against it along with nine other democratic senators. On the Senate floor last year he attacked fellow members of Congress based on his investigation of Section 215 of the Patriot act which secretly puts much of our personal information into Fri databases a a Many members of Congress have no idea How the Law is being secretly interpreted by the executive Branch because that interpretation is classified. Our constituents of course Are totally in the dark. Members of the Public have no Access to the secret Legal interpretations so they have no idea what their government believes the Law actually Means a a a Oregon sen. Ron Wyden is. Usa Patriot act a a Salem Ore May 27, 2011. In May 2011, Wyden voted against the reauthorization of the Bill. This year Wyden has gone even further in combating the executive branches Ever expanding actions to keep the citizenry ignorant of what a being done to disable the constitutions separation of Powers. He was the Only member of the select committee on intelligence who voted against the presidents intelligence authorization act because of a anti leak provisions that would inhibit free speech and damage the Media a ability to report on National Security issues a a a Wyden places hold on intelligence authorization Bill a a , nov. 14. Wyden argued from the floor of the Senate that a a Congress should Benat Hentoff extremely sceptical of any anti leaks Bills that threaten to encroach upon the Freedom of the press or that would reduce Access to information that the Public has a right to know. A without transparent and informed Public debate on foreign policy and National Security topics american voters would be ill equipped to elect the policymakers who make important decisions in these areas , nov. 14. With four More years of Barack Obama i am bound to add Only our commander in chief will be deciding what the Public has a right to know. As Kevin Gosztola perceptively reports a the anti leaks provisions approved by the Senate select committee on intelligence were drawn up As a response to a leaks on Caber warfare against Iran Obama so kill list and a Cia underwear bomb plot sting operation in Yemen. Senators like Dianne Feinstein claimed they would curb a unauthorized disclosures of a classified information from people who Are not authorized to a leak a a senator Wyden opposes anti leaks provisions puts hold on intelligence authorization Bill a , nov. 14. Gosztola continues a another provision would prohibit intelligence employees from speaking to the Media on background on unclassified issues even if they would happen to be authorized. Again this would limit Media organizations Access to sources and narrow the number of officials in the intelligence Community Able to provide background information for supposedly this is to strengthen National Security. Its More Likely to allow the current administration to continue doing whatever it pleases without being bothered by any of us in the lowly masses. Gosztola cites a particularly stinging element of this debate that in be seen Little mention of elsewhere in the Media a yet another provision a would give the Heads of intelligence agencies the authority to strip pension benefits from any employee or former employee that the Agency head a a determines a is responsible for an unauthorized disclosure of classified Hentoff is an authority on the first amendment and the Bill of rights
