Ever since Merkel and his family moved to Arlington Heights from Chicago in january of 1951, he has been a devoted fan of both Arlington High school and St. Viator High school athletics. It has helped that most of his six children four boys and two girls have been involved in High school sports. In fact one son was a state doubles Champion in Tennis in 1973. His youngest son is a freshman at Arlington and plays on the Frosh soph Tennis team. But besides following his own childrens Progress he also has been involved in other areas. Merkel feels that his most significant contribution however was the founding of the our lady of the Wayside basketball program and his part in setting up the Northwest Catholic athletic conference composed of area grammar schools. These efforts just underscore his dedication to and genuine enjoyment of youth oriented athletics.
