Arlington Heights Daily Herald (Newspaper) - April 10, 1990, Arlington Heights, Illinois Plople closeup coach is swimming in honors retiring Hersey swimming coach Don Andersen was recently presented with the John Neuman Hall of Fame award by the Illinois swimming association. In addition to his inclusion in the Illinois Hall of Fame for swimming Andersen s name will be added to the permanent John Neuman award trophy that is showcased at the National swimming Hall of Fame in fort Lauderdale Fla. In addition Andersen received an end of service award from the National interscholastic swimming coaches association and was nominated for one of the outstanding service awards for the Nisca. The winners of the outstanding service award will be chosen next year by the Nisca membership. A i think ifs about the highest Honor that one can get in this state a Andersen said. A when you Are chosen by your Peers that a the ultimate award. A i guess it says that in 36 years someone did notice what i was doing a he added. A it tells me that All the work i put into swimming Don Andersen Over the years has been Worth Andersen coached swimming in Illinois for 36 years 28 in High school programs with 22 years As a head coach. He compiled a 317-131-5 record in dual meets. But his contributions to the Community extend far beyond his winning record. Andersen has been a major Force in the establishment of age group Park District and Myca swimming programs in the Northwest suburbs and he deserves a Lions share of the credit for the prominence of the mid suburban league in Illinois High school association Competition. He has also been the a coach of coaches a playing Mentor to such outstanding swimming coaches ased Richardson of Palatine Jim Bart of Barrington Sherry Meyer of Deerfield David Sharos of Schaumburg and Dave Bart of St. Charles. A George Halas it pays to be wealthy in social club circles a i see you survived the night a i said to the Man at the door at the University club. A of he was standing at a lectern and As he inspected me he suddenly came out from behind the lectern and blocked the Way. A a in a sorry we have a dress i went into my coat pocket and whipped out a tie which i knotted in front of him. This made him More at ease. A you did no to have the police come Here last night and Check the place a he was asked. A this Isnit that kind of club. Ifs for sophisticated a what about your exits a a a done to worry. We have All Over the City people from agencies were closing social clubs but among those passed up was the University club. The lobby of the seven Story Stone building has a Marble floor and Marble pillars. To the right As you enter there is a vast ornate sitting room with a ceiling far overhead Large old rugs on the floor and paintings on the Walls. Standing Here in the Large room yesterday certainly was More pleasant than the night when the aftermath of a fire at another City club the Happy land in the Bronx created this unfortunate spectacle in the Large room of the Williams funeral Home on Broadway. The room was not of the size of the main one Here at the University club but it could accommodate the caskets of nine of the 87 killed. That room resembled a department store with crowds collected around each casket As if it were a counter and other people moving from one casket to the other bumping into each other As if shopping. At one casket a Man in a White shirt leaned on it with his folded and his Chin on his and stared at the face of his son Victor Cordova 19. A this is what happens a the Man said. Victor had been in a club where Jimmy Breslin there was not one weapon or evidence of drugs found. Therefore it was about the Best social club you can find in the Bronx and people were there to celebrate a couple of birthdays. But it was a club for the poor and therefore was a dangerous joint with no windows and one Way out. Which is Why it is better to go to clubs that Are Rich enough to see that nobody Dies. The University club has an excellent Library with fascinating old history books. From the lobby a Long staircase went upstairs to a satisfactory menus taproom that has a Good stand up bar with room for about 20. The panelled Walls open up from prohibition Days when members hid their bottles. The taproom is excellent for a drink after playing Squash upstairs. And there is none of this coarse music As they have in these wretched clubs in the Bronx such As the Happy land. Aside from surroundings there was realism to the University club yesterday. Nobody in this City cares about the poor anyway unless they die in some spectacular fashion. Therefore you might As Well get inside someplace like the University club and have a drink. Who wants anything to do with the rest of it the condition of the Bronx As seen by simply walking through the area around the Happy land club is so frightful that the Only reason it exists is that everybody must want it that Way. Things Are worse than they have been with the number of completely poor growing dramatically. The downtown City accepts this noiselessly among things lost in a place where Money is the sole driving Force is anger.
