About 28 homemaker leaders from Kansas will make up the delegation. visit England. Sweden the soviet Union Poland Germany and Switzerland. The delegation will visit Homes in each country and compare methods and procedures and Home economics programs. They also will meet with United states and foreign government representatives. Delegates were invited to take part in the 22-Day Goodwill people to people Mission on the basis of their Active roles in promoting homemaking according to Elinor Anderson delegation Leader and hostess. Anderson is the Extension specialist in family economics at Kansas state University Manhattan. A these women Lead Active fulfilling lives a a Anderson said a not Only As homemakers but also As civic and cultural leaders in their the people to people travel program sponsor and organizer of the Mission was conceived in 1956 to implement president Dwight Eisenhower a dream of promoting Friendship and understanding among the Ordinary people of the world. Newsome who has been in Arkansas City six months said this is his first experience working directly with a salvation army Thrift store. Although cities in which he has worked before have had stores they were run by army rehabilitation groups he said. A i never thought of myself As a merchant a a Newsome said. Quot in a not really. I guess i m a Jack of All trades but running the store is a headache sometimes when your Bills Are More than you re taking in. A at wits end twice Newsome has had to take Money from other salvation army coffers to supplement the store he said. Ideally the store should help financially support army Church and rehabilitation programs he said. A a we re Here for two purposes a Newsome said a a we re Here to provide a service to the Community and to try to subsidize the salvation army program. We provide the service but we re not yet Able to subsidize the program. A the store stocks items that have been donated to the army. Inventory includes clothes shoes furniture appliances televisions bicycles rags dishes and some Antiques Quot whatever we pick up on the streets that is usable is what goes on our Racks a he said. Thursday is army pickup Day. Newsome covers the county on that Day calling on people who have told him they have items they wish to donate except for furniture Newsome said he has not had problems keeping the store stocked Quot i do not have any worry about keeping Supply Quot he said. A we always have plenty of donations of clothing and kick Knacks. furniture we have no problems with furniture people donate to the store is sometimes too damaged to sell Newsome said. We offer special sales like this once every other week or though Newsome is ultimately responsible for the store and his wife Abigail sometimes works there most Selling is handled by two volunteers who Are salvation army Church members. To encourage More customer traffic in the store Newsome said the Volunteer workers Are planning other special sales. Newsome himself is making arrangements with local furniture dealers and appliance suppliers to obtain their Trade in or damaged merchandise.
