Arcadia Tribune (Newspaper) - October 27, 1938, Arcadia, California Page two Arcadia daily Tribune thursday october 27. 1d?8 Merriam or Olson on november 8. The voters of California will choose Between two candidates the Man who As governor Quot ill Iii vet the affairs of this Fine state of the Union for the next four years. The Choice lies Between Frank f. Merriam present governor and Colbert Olson a state senator. That these men Are. Respectively the Republican and the nominally democratic nominees for the states highest executive Post is the least important aspect of the contest. The question to be settled is not a partisan one. Only in the broadest sense is it even political. At every essential Point it is the same question which was answered four years ago by the election of governor Merriam Over i Pton Sinclain it is the question of whet hoi California shall continue sane conservative and successful or shall abandon proven ways to Well being for an excursion into the wilderness of Radical experimentation. What does this state or any state require As the essential qualities of a governor first of All a policy a program and a background that give Assurance of the program which in a period of general distress and against Odds faced by few states have put California in the top six of All the commonwealths in solvency and Equality of welfare. Governor Merriam has earned the support of every considerable constructive element of the state. Senator Olson has no policy save that of political expediency and no program but one of confused and contradictory promises. The great bulk of his support is trom those who expect to gain personal illegitimate advantages at the expense of others from his election. His principal organization endorsements Are those of the communists the Tom Mooney defense league the . And the Ham amp egg pension planners. He has the nominal support of the state democratic organization but 150.000 More registered democrats voted against his nomination than voted for it. He has the nominal support of the National administration but it has been largely nullified by the new deals unania i Mous repudiation of the Crackpot pension scheme which is Olson a chief support. Next most important is the qualifications reasonably to be demanded of an aspirant for the governorship is a i personal and official record that support his claims of future j service. For More than a Quarter of a Century go Cinor Merriam has served the people of California continuously faithfully and effectively As state assemblyman state senator lieutenant governor and governor. In the last name capacity he inherited a deficit of $30,000,000 which in four years of sound financing he has halved. In the same period the states budget has been balanced its credit raised to a place among the country a highest and a rigid system of pay As you go established and enforced for every state activity. This has not been accomplished by oppressive taxation or by the curtailment of any essential or humanitarian service. On the contrary our per capita state taxes Are among the lowest and the most equitably spread in the United states our old age benefits Are actually the highest paid by any Commonwealth regardless of size of resources. In the face of an indigent problem such As no other state has had to contend with Relief and unemployment have been adequately and no politically cared for an unprecedented demand for emergency flood Aid met state services to the Public and to our widely diversified business agricultural mining and manufacturing interests extended and on exceptional High Standard of Public education maintained. Considering the terrific handicaps which during the past four years depression and unemployment have thrust upon every government and particularly upon California s the Merriam record is an extraordinary one equalled by that of few states and certainly surpassed by none. To the manifold problems of government of labor relations of indigent Aid of legislation and of finance the governor has brought qualities of courage intelligence tolerance honesty consistency and fairness which have won for him the Confidence and cooperation of his own subordinates of the Public of other states and of the Federal government. There is never any doubt where governor Merriam stands on any Public question his platform is one which meets every Issue squarely and without equivocation. He is not merely Able and experienced he is thoroughly dependable. He has never made a Promise he did not make Good he is making none such now. As an administrator and executive of Public affairs Large or Small the Best that can be said of senator Olson is that he is a completely unkown Quantity. His experience j in office is limited to service As a state senator in Utah and in California. He is an advocate strictly for vote getting j purposes of whatever unsound political or economic fad happens to be popular at the moment. In 1934 he was in. The forefront of Upton Sinclair a epic campaigns for the i Sake of its Aid to his candidacy for the state Senate. This year he won his gubernatorial nomination by pre primary advocacy of the $30-every-thursday pension scheme since the primary when the Public began to Wake up to the economic menace of the Ham amp egg chimera he has demonstrated his Complete Lack of sincerity and conviction by consistently dodging any reference to the Issue either in his continued on Page la Scott Heads Monrovia police twelve years from a slow and inadequate system of red lights operated at night from the Telephone office to Call police to duty.
