Anaheim Bulletin (Newspaper) - August 10, 1991, Anaheim, California Saturday aug. 10, 1991 Anaheim bulletin b9religion looking for trouble myths abound about hell s existence Gustav Spohn new York times news service Anaheim a you think you be heard them All How about the one about a group of geologists who drilled a Hole nine Miles deep in Siberia and acc Dently discovered hell Complete with screams of the damned move Over Rudolph Bultmann with your talk about the a a myth of the three tiered universe. We now have hell to go along with Earth and Concrete evidence of heaven could not be far behind. The Siberia Story is Only the latest in a series of seemingly intractable rumours that persist in some segments of the religious Community despite preposterous claims and or a Complete Lack of documentation. Several in the genre come immediately to mind a the Story about the Quot vanishing Hitchhiker who warned of the return of Jesus and turned out to be a Man killed a few hours earlier in a car crash. A the Story about the satanic wizardry behind the Proctor amp Gamble trademark. A the Story that Madalyn Murray of hair is campaigning to ban religious programming from the airwaves. The tale from the Frozen Tundra of Siberia though May be the hottest of them All. Thus far it has been repeated with varying degrees of scepticism in the pages of christianity today the biblical archaeology review and the All Africa press service which is linked to the All Africa conference of churches. The Story goes like this according to a report in a finnish newspaper scientists from a joint european drilling project drilled nine Miles into the Earth where they recorded a temperature of Over 2,000 degrees fahrenheit. Hoping to listen to the Earth a movements they lowered microphones into the Hole. What the scientists heard was not geological rumblings but the screams of humans a at least thousands perhaps millions a in pain. They had apparently hit hell. Out of fear at least half of the scientists quit. Finnish and norwegian scientists were offered huge bribes to keep quiet about the discovery. Fearing for their lives they took the bribes but spoke out upon their return Home. The Story has circulated for at least a year a the christianity today article ran in july 1990 a and it is still being repeated. The All Africa press service ran a Story in its july 29 Issue quoting from the biblical archaeology review article of november december 1990. But showing some journalistic scepticism the press service checked the Story out with a finnish embassy official who said he Felt it was not True. Biblical archaeology review saying the Story had been passed along by a Reader in Starkville miss., printed it without a disclaimer. But the Magazine prefaced its account with reference to two other purported a a discoveries a of Noah Sark and the Ark of the covenant both previously debunked in the pages of the review. When a number of readers complained about the Story biblical archaeology review responded with a note headlined a honest we were Only kidding a the note said a we thought the claim that hell was discovered a with millions of people screaming nine Miles below the Earth a surface a was so inherently ridiculous that our readers would get a laugh Over the Story just As we if hell were really discovered the Magazine said the announcement would have been in 72-Point Type on a featured Page a not buried As it was on Page six in a Section of the Magazine devoted to Brief reports. The review also alerted readers to the christianity today article written by California talk show Host Rich Buhler who reported tracing documentation of the Story to two sources a a letter to the editor published in a finnish newspaper and written by an elderly Man who thought he got his information originally from a Christian newsletter in California. A a letter sent to a Texas evangelist from a finnish school teacher who had heard the Story while travelling in California and wrote the letter As a hoax just to see if the evangelist would use it. Orange ave. Anaheim 714 828-1077 there is a plaque on the Wall in our House that reads a i asked god How much he loved and he said a this much a and he stretched out his and to which i say a for god so hugged the world that he stretched out his for sunday evenings at our Celebration service we have printed in the worship order a Christian we get up out of these pews and we All hug each other. It is wonderful we get giggly and we laugh like crazy and the smiles Are from ear to ear and it is serious theological business. Only because god hugged can we hug. Hugs Are an integral part of our lives a wonderful expression of love. When i hear John 3 16, a for god so loved the i cannot help but think of god in a tactile embrace with the world. But for some people a hug is a difficult and painful concept. Some people would say a for god so judged the world that he sent an enforcer to Zap us for our if you feel god judges you you will judge others. Others would say a for god so scorned the world that he demanded humans to work for a place in his if you feel god scorns you you will scorn others. And others might put it a for god so a lorded it Over the world that he demanded offerings and costly sacrifices for his own enrichment. Cash on the barrel head salvation a if you feel god a lords it Over you you will lord it Over others. For Many More it is a for god Remote and aloof held such wonderful philosophical thoughts about the world that he provided a Mountain for us to climb where at the top a guru will give us All the if god is Remote and aloof from you you will be Remote and aloof to others. No for god so hugged not god so mugged sadly the Case often is that god so loved yet we so shrugged. And whatever our picture of god and gods ways of treating us that is the Way we treat other people. We Are not to judge others we Are to love others. We Are not to scorn others we Are to love others. We Are not to a lord it Over others we Are to love others. We Are not to be Remote and aloof pretending to some intellectual or spiritual superiority we Are to love others. We Are in the business of hugging people not putting them Down or off. Hugs happen Only in gods Light and hugs happen Only because god so hugged the world that he stretched out his for us.
