Albert Lea Sunday Tribune (Newspaper) - April 12, 1979, Albert Lea, Minnesota A time for tradition decorations kids will adore aaaanaqsx3aad$l Tami Dahl is feted at party by Klue Grossman new York Nea Wendell is holding his breath and his face is turning purple. Just the color for an easter egg which is Why Wendell is holding his breath to encourage you to a help Quot him Dye easter eggs although you Don t know How. Never mind. You can rely on druggist will Townley who lived in Newark n.j., in the latter part of the last Century he dyed eggs so Well on the Side that he finally started a company called Paas in 1880, which claims to be the oldest and largest maker of easter egg colouring kits in the country. Quot Paas a the company says Means easter in Pennsylvania dutch which was possibly will a Way of giving credit where ifs due. The Paas people also say that dutch settlers in Pennsylvania and new York brought egg colouring to America but did t the Pennsylvania dutch come from Germany maybe they coloured eggs too. Anyway Paas puts out three colouring kits sold in food drug and discount stores All Over. For 59 cents the Small kit provides six pure food Dye color tablets that dissolve into six different colors a piece of wire looped at one end that bends into an Quot egg dipper Quot so the egg changes color and not your fingers a Small Sheet of designs you Cut out wet and stick on the egg when ifs dry plus a Bunny cart and six twirly tops. The cart is what you get after cutting and folding the Container inside the Box once you be punched the perforated twirly tops out of it. It they have no relation to eggs. They re there in Case Wendell wants to stick a toothpick in one and go off and twirl the medium kit for 89 cents gives you the tablets the dipper an extra Sheet of Transfer designs 25 easter decals the size of an Elf a Rump one punch out merry go round and nine twirly tops. Be a sport and go for the family size kit for $1.29. It pays. You get a couple of More colors More Transfer sheets three sheets of the same 25 decals and two paper bunnies and one paper Duck to Cut out and dress the eggs in. Therefore if you mess up anything you have Back up supplies to try again. Before Messing anything though you have to decide whether you la want to show the eggs to Wendell a Bride in 20 years. If so you la have to get rid of their insides. If you think Shell just smile politely leave the Yolks where they Are and hard boil the eggs. In either Case use clean White eggs because White makes for better colouring and clean Means you be washed off preservatives which do not make for better colouring. But wait. Wendell has his head in the oven because he wants his eggs to last forever. You re going to have to blow out their innards. So take an egg and make a Hole in each end with Sharp manicure scissors. Now hold the egg Over a bowl not the carpet because when you blow through one end the Yolk and White Are supposed to come out the other. Unless the holes Are too Small in which Case the gunk la stay put and you la have to enlarge the holes. After you be smashed enough eggs to convince Wendell that hard boiling is the Way to go do four to six eggs at a time in a Large pan so they done to get hysterical and crack each others sides. Start with Cool water eggs at room temperature and let them jump around for 20 minutes. Tatien wait until you can Finger them without juggling before colouring. Now for that purple egg. Put one half cup cold water and one Tablespoon vinegar into a one cup Container and drop a purple Paas Quot fizz Tablet into it. When the water is purple stick the egg in the dipper and dip. An empty Shell will Bob and feint so if you be managed to produce any you la have to spoon the Dye Over it. Keep dipping or spooning until the purple appeals. Then remove the egg and let it dry in a bowl or the Quot drying rack which is the backside of the Paas kit after perforated circles Are knocked out. That s it. For More Pizzazz you can tie Dye eggs. Fizz up say an Orange Tablet then put half the solution in a bowl. Add half a teaspoonful of cooking Oil and slosh the egg around. Oil and water really done to mix so refuse to Dye the egg evenly which is just what you want. Go on to slosh the egg around in Blue fizz red Etc and voila a tie dyed egg. Finally since Wendell started All this he deserves credit so give it to him. Write his name in Crayon on a hard boiled egg then Dye it in warm water Dye solution. When it dries Quot Wendell Woshinsky Quot will emerge. It la Only last until wednesday when he a getting egg salad for lunch but Wendell sold enough either to face the Tran sciences of life or develop a Knack for blowing out eggs. The family n Cookin it fun Albert Lea Tribune thar4sy, april u. H7f requiem rescheduled love notes by love Cruikshonk serving after show Here s a suggestion in the religion in which i was reared the emphasis was always on the resurrection rather than on the crucifixion so there were no Good Friday services. I do remember though being taken to Good Friday services once by my maternal grandmother who continued in the old Faith though her daughter my Mother was a convert to a new one i was impressed by the veiled Crucifix the solemnity of the music and the tragic drama of the Observance such is habit that i. At that Early age never connected any of it with religion but thought of it More in the nature of entertainment and was grateful for it As i was for anything of the kind Back in those television less Days my Mother s Observance of Good Friday unless easter came too Early or Winter lingered too late was to Plant her Garden. Folkways linger she was modern about religion but extremely reactionary in other ways and knew that potatoes grew Well Only if planted on Good Friday. And if potatoes Why not other things such As nasturtiums and morning glories and Little Spring onions on Maundy thursday therefore such seeds As required it were put to soak and Friday would find us out in the Garden already spaced and measured out by tautly pulled strings by my father. I always had a tiny Garden of my own and my own Small Rake Spade and Hoe to encourage me in one of my mothers favorite pastimes. I fear i was always something of a disappointment to her putting seeds in carefully one at a time and the right distance apart tended to grow Tedius and sooner or later id covertly dump a handful of them in hoping to get through with it and on to something More amusing the weeds grew faster than the Flowers and More often than not i was perplexed As to just which was Flower and which was Weed the Only thing that kept me at it i suppose was that there was a certain pleasure in being out in the soft rain smelling Spring warmed Garden with my Mother. Her gardens were works of Art admired by All and shared with everyone. She always said that a Garden responded to the Effort spent on it More quickly than did anything else hearing her say it sometimes made me feel a Little uneasy realizing As i did that she found it infinitely easier to Vank weeds out of her Garden than to eradicate faults in her non gardening daughter time of sadness an elderly Friend of mine told me once that at this time of the year she always had to fight a stiff Ling sense of depression eventually she realized it was rooted in the holy week observances of her childhood particularly the Good Friday Observance with its heavy emphasis on the horror and anguish of the crucifixion. She said the whole thing was so tragically impressed on her at an impressionable age that she never of a to of really enjoyed easter. It remained for most of her life her least favorite of holidays in my childhood people were More assiduous in placing Flowers on the Graves of their beloved dead than they Are now when once a year at memorial Day is considered sufficient. Then the clan repaired to the graveyard on birthdays death Days and other times with bouquets. The birthday and death Day of my sister both falling in april there were occasions when it fell on easter and the family took Flowers to her grave when i was very Young i remember once carding an easter egg to the cemetery and being sad and More than a Little irritated that by some easter Miracle she Wasny to resurrected to receive it beyond that i always thought of this season of the year As a particularly Happy time marking As it does the end of Winter. The Joy of the easter always outweighed the tragedy of Black Friday which in any event seem too wholly tragic when my Mother was out joyously Quot planting seeds in the Garden every time it rolled around.
