Albert Lea Freeborn Patriot (Newspaper) - September 26, 1934, Albert Lea, Minnesota 4 Freeborn Patrio Freeborn Patriot published Semi monthly by Columbia press albeit Lea. Inn. Roger b. Ostby editor Harry Jacobson business manager subscription rates one year in advance.90 six months in Advance .50 if you Are really in favor of tax Justice if you Are really in favor of tax Justice then you Are in favor of the Farmer labor program As advocated by governor Olson. This program Calls for an exemption of taxation on the first $4,000 of valuation of Homes and farms and would place this tax upon the wealthy who for years have been dodging taxes. Remember however that such a program cannot be carried out by the governor alone but has to first be passed upon by both houses of the legislature signed by the governor and declared constitutional by the supreme court. Therefore if you Are really for such a program you should vote not Only for Olson but also for Arnold Pless senator j. S. Mccornack chief Justice John p. Devaney William Anderson candidate for associate Justice of the supreme court and Julius b. Olson candidate for associate Justice of the supreme court. A shame unable to successfully attack governor Olson a record or the platform on which he stands the opposition has turned the character assassins Loose. They Are heaping upon him slander and abuse. One hardly believed it was possible that anyone would stoop so Low in order to win a few votes. A few Days ago a Man was in a Hayward store slandering the governor. When asked to put his statements in writing and sign and affidavit he refused to do so and admitted that what he was saying was Only question please who Ever suggested writing the school books anyway ask anyone they cannot Tell you the reason they cannot Tell you is that no one Bai proposed to do such a thing. The. I i Izier labor party has proposed Only the state shall print text books. Not edit or write them. This they propose because it will save people of the state a tremendous amount of Money. This is not fiction it is fact. There Are eight states and the District of Columbia that Are now printing school text books and it a known fact that they Are saving the people Money by so thirteen and the eighty seven the daily papers Are trying to give the people the impression that the ministry is opposed to the Farmer labor platform and when any minister voices any opposition to the Farmer labor party it goes into the headlines. If numbers mean anything to you the opposite is True. According to the literary digest out of 20,000 ministers answering a questionnaire sent to them asking a which in their opinion was most consistent with and least antagonistic to the teachings of Jesus and the noblest of the hebrew prophets a cooperative Commonwealth or capitalism eighty seven said a cooperative Commonwealth while Only thirteen out of every Hundred said capitalism. These questionnaires were sent out to ministers of All protestant denominations including the jewish rabbis. The cooperative Commonwealth is the goal of the Farmer labor party so it is positively evident that most of the ministers Are for the Farmer labor platform. What have they done what will they do the Republican candidates Are loud in their criticism of the Farmer labor party but they never mention what the Republican party has done. They never mention their past record. They never Tell you what they will do. Their past a record is too a a Blacks to mention and they do not wish to let the people know what they will do if elected because they know that in that Case there would be no Chance at All of the Republican party winning the election. Done to sign a contract unless you have first read its contents and done to vote for a candidate who is afraid to give his stand or Tell you what he will do if elected. The Peoples party the kept press delights in raising a Hullabaloo about alleged three per cent contributions of Highway workers to the Farmer labor Campaign fund. That workers Are compelled to make this contribution in order to hold a Job is absolutely false. Whatever contributions Are made Are voluntary. Many can to afford to pay anything and they done to. However assuming that each and every employee of the Highway department did pay three per cent what would be so terribly wrong about it the Farmer labor party is the Peoples party and it is supported by them. The Republican party does no to need to depend on individual contributions. It has Access to the unlimited resources of the steel Trust the Power Trust the Telephone Trust the morgans melons and Rockefeller so pocketbooks. These sources provide the Money for such traitors As a. C. Townley for the Straw poll and for the vicious propaganda being circulated. In return for these contributions the Republican party is obligated to Confer special privileges which take the form of High tariffs huge income tax refunds subsidies and legislation beneficial to the privileged few. The local daily regrets that a Only Farmer lab orites Are permitted to work on the highways. Ii an employee of the local daily went about the Street denouncing Martin Nelson and his politics How Long would he last and ii the republicans Ever regain control of the state administration heaven forbid How Many Farmer labovites would be retained its just another Case of whose of is gored. The Ostrich when the reactionary gop press feels its readers May have become tired of a steady diet of a demagogue a a spellbinder a a communist a a socialist a etc., and Infin Tum it varies its menu by accusing the Farmer labor administration and progressive leaders of a stirring up class this portion of the press is like the Ostrich it buries its head in the Sand and tries to make people believe there Are no classes in american that this is the country of Opportunity for All. There was a time when there was Opportunity for All. But that time has passed. During the last 50 years men like j. P. Morgan the Pupons Rockefeller melons Carnegie and scores of smaller Fry millionaires have gobbled up the natural resources of this country and by a system of Laws have acquired controlling interests in the major industries to such an extent the so called common Man no longer has a Chance to eke out a decent living. Just As Feudal Europe was divided into classes of landlord and peasant so today is the United states divided into classes of wealth and poverty. The lines were drawn not by the poor Man but by the wealthy who have continued to grow Richer while the poor grow poorer. This conflict Between the two classes becomes More bitter As time goes on. It shows itself by Ever increasing breadline mortgage foreclosures and evictions. When the oppression becomes unbearable there Are strikes and usually bloodshed
