A citizens suggests that the hog be replaced by the Goose. Change would be profitable. Requires but Little care and gives Good returns. In View of the enormous losses to our Farmers through hog cholera or Swine plague by which Many of Freeborn county a Best Farmers Are deprived of the greater share of tit air yearly income it is time to look to some other animal to replace the hog on the farm. While some Farmers con Sider the Swine plague a great calamity perhaps it will be found later on a Blessing in disguise. According to Best medical advise the meat of hogs is a decidedly unwholesome article As human food no doubt its excessive use As an article of diet is responsible for dyspepsia rheumatism and other ailments which make the american people almost a nation of invalids. Therefore is it not better the hog should become extinct through disease than that this nation should Loose its vigor through the unwholesome hog products the jews the most enlightened nation of past Ages prohibited the use of pork As diet for the people As a part of their religion and does not history prove through All Ages to the present Day that the jews possess a remarkable vitality if the human body requires animal of amp a or animal fat other animals not so rep Lively dirty in their habits As the hog can be found in great varieties. If the american people cannot get along with meat and fat of cattle and sheep or if the Farmers cannot make Money fast enough in cattle and sheep raising compared with hogs there is one Domestic animal which can fill the Bill and that is the Goose. The Goose became celebrated thousands of years ago by preserving the roman nation and the Goose May Rescue the american people from the hog calamity. With proper management the Goose can be made a profitable Staple product on the farms of Minnesota requiring but Little care and giving Large the show window that is full of the b. K. Gage Hayden amp co. Returns. W Ith proper feeding and the right Breed a Goose hatched in May May be brought to weigh Twenty pounds before Christmas their meat is generally three times As High in Price As pork therefore a Hundred geese May safely be counted on to bring the Farmer As much profit As Twenty to thirty pigs even if each of them weighs two Hundred pounds when sold. It will most less to keep Over Winter a Gander and ten geese than a Brood sow. The average number of pigs from one sow can hardly be More than six. Allowing All six to mature will give the Farmer twelve Hundred pounds pork from the pigs and the old sow say three Hundred pounds total fifteen Hundred pounds pork at three cents per Pound will give fifty five dollars. Now taking a family of eleven geese with proper care As to water pasture and Breeding place each Goose will Hatch fifteen to Twenty goslings or hens May be used to Hatch the Goose eggs. Even allowing Only for ten goslings of each of the ten geese making one Hundred when matured each to weigh Only fifteen pounds the total will give fifteen Hundred pounds and the eleven old ones one Hundred and fifty pounds additional being More meat than of the sow and her litter of pigs. The Price of the fat geese will readily be twice As much As pork therefore giving the Farmer twice the income and the feathers will give an additional profit. Then it is Safe to say that every one Hundred and ten geese can be raised on less feed and land and care than every seven hogs. During the whole summer nothing will be needed for feed but a Low pasture with a Pond of water in it or a pasture near a Lake or Creek. If no natural Pond of water is near a Small Pond can easily be built to keep full from the Windmill on each farm. Near the pasture May be a Patch of peas or Oats in which the geese May go occasionally for a change of food. Towards Winter the geese May be penned up in dark boxes each separate from the other and by feeding them heavy with Corn meal coarse Rye meal Low Grade wheat flour or mid Lings mixed with boiled potatoes turnips carrots or other vegetables they will fatten quickly. In Northern Germany geese culture is carried on on a Large scale on the a forge farms there geese Are raised by the thousands and there is a great demand for them in Berlin and other Large German cities. It is a popular saying of the people of Berlin a Seine gute Geb Ratene Gans is Eine gute Gabe Gottes Quot a which translated in to English is a a a Good broiled Goose is a Good gift of god Quot thus expressing their admiration of their favorite delicate meat which if properly fattened surpasses the meat of almost any other animal for human food. The fat of the Goose has a very pleasant taste better than lard for cooking and baking being preferred by Many people to butter. Now is the time for Farmers to secure a flock of geese for making a Start to establish geese culture in Freeborn county on a Large scale. the disagreeable Man. Adrian Democrat there is no Pei son who figures before the Community in so ridiculous a Light As the disgruntled person the Man who imagines he has Tot been treated right by the people whose superlative merits Are not appreciated As they should be. He is out on dress Parade most of the time with his sore toe exposed to the gaze of the vulgar. He relates his Little of woe to this Man or that attacks such and such a person while his hearers listen with ill disguised impatience give him the laugh when he is gone and pronounce him an unmitigated nuisance and bore. The disgruntled Man has few friends and no sympathizers but owing to a strange Freak of human nature he is endowed with superlative conceit and perhaps lives in the Davs of the past what he once was you know before the flight of time changed him mentally and physically. And thus he goes about a bundle of conceit rancor jealousy presenting a picture of human nature both pitiful and contemptible. New service to California via the c., m. Amp St. P.
