The condition of affairs is such wit Ness said that there is an entire Lack of Confidence by the Whites in the Blacks and vice versa. He thought the exodus would continue and increase in the future unless the White people of the South change their present Atti tude and give to the negro the same Protection and Enco argement that is afforded them in Kansas and other Northern states. When seen by the Globe reporter Miede was lying Down in the cell with arms and legs securely shackled. He stubbornly refused to Rise and has such a limited knowledge of eng Lish As to make anything like a conversation in native vernacular out of the question. The Globe linguist opened fire in German but on All Points concerning Bis connection with the tragedy he is entirely reticent. On other matters be is familiarly glib Bat evades conversation on the murder replying to All questions by protesting innocence. The murder for which Miede was convicted and for which his brother Black was lynched is one of the most bloody and cold i hearted affairs Ever recorded As having taken place in this state. The murder was the result of criminal passion resulting from the seduction and illicit Liaison by Miede with Kowny s wife. The shameful affair became the theme of the neighbourhood and the utmost indignation was expressed at the action of the the people became of incensed at the affair that the House of the medea was burned by some unknown person which led to the Mur Der. A few nights after the fire the Miede Brothers visited Kohay s House and brained him and Steinhuber with an Are. The murder was prompted by revenge and the country became intensely excited at the enormity of the outrage. All the Circum stances pointed to the Miede Brothers As the fiendish perpetrators and Justice was not slow in asserting her claims. The brothels were Daly captured and charged with the crime. Clack John Miede a brother to Michael came into the meshes of the Law first and was made to feel the weight of retributive Justice at once. If our informant s statements Are Correct it would seem that the government ought to make More definite regulations in behalf of these indians. But until Congress takes hold of the Indian system with an. Earnest purpose of thoroughly reforming it not Only these but All indians will remain strangely subject to the whims and fancies of Indian officials and the interests of traders and contractors though supposed to be protected by treaties and Laws and to be favored by the plans of the govern ment for improvement of their condition.
