Alamogordo Daily News (Newspaper) - May 21, 1972, Alamogordo, New Mexico So / is Filiti ssrvxc2 1302 a Yandell cd ,Texas-7990?Chaparral Junior highs Back to normalcy by Billie Holder everything a Normal at Chaparral Junior High. And that a the Way it has been on about 99 per cent of the Days of the school year it was that Way last monday and it appeared to be that Way tuesday a at least to most of the teachers and other adults out there. Last tuesday though a couple of incidents erupted causing a bit of drastic action on the part of the Board of education and a group of parents attend ing what was expected to be a routine Pat meeting with charges of various kinds and demanding some answers. The drastic action of the school Board was the closing of the Chaparral Campus. Quieting the parents though has been quite another matter and it appears to us that some very careful explanations ought to be made. That opinion was formed after we visited with some very concerned and disturbed teachers who feel that Public opinion has been turned against them and their school and they also feel that parents have lost Confidence in them As teachers. Parents have called them to express displeasure in their ability to teach to discipline and Lead the youngsters of Junior High age. Some have scolded school administrators for being a too easy on students and others have called charging they Are entirely a too Tough. The teachers out there feel they Are caught in the Middle of a situation Over which they had no control and that the entire matter was treated with far More emphasis than it deserved. The two incidents and a third one. Really happened about the same time but were far removed from one another and so far As can be determined were totally unrelated. With the mood of the nation being one of unrest and apprehension with citizens and students alike being concerned Over a National atmosphere that would cause assassinations and attempted assassinations one can understand How people nowadays tend to Ovet react in situations like this. One paragraph in the daily news Story about the tuesday incident said a police officers were dispatched to the school after reports were received that fights on the Campus and in the Halls were in this is All True. Investigation reveals that the scuffle in the Hall occupied less time than one minute. It involved two people. They were parted. With no particular difficulty and moved on outside. So far As we have been Able to determine that scuffle did not continue when the kids got outside. The other two incidents went like this a couple of men teachers who were out near the South Edge of the Campus noted a couple of pick up trucks loaded with youths who Are not students at Chaparral were driving up to another group assembled across the Street a off the Chaparral Campus. It appeared a gang fight might erupt. They waded into the Middle of it All warned the a a visitors to get into the vehicle and move on before police arrived and they began to do so. A Rock was thrown it hit one youngster causing a wound on the Mouth and about the nose who ultimately went to the Hospital for treatment and then on Home he was Back St pm i column 4 volume 78?no. 117 Alamogordo new Mexico sunday May 21, 1972 24 pages 15c Bonnell prints to be Homecoming gifts announcement that prints of a popular painting by local artist Dorsey Bonnell will be featured awards during events of the Alamogordo Homecoming june 30-july i has quickened interest again in the gala get together of former residents and a at Homes being planned or chamber of Commerce guidance.
