Aiken Standard (Newspaper) - May 6, 1993, Aiken, South Carolina Flowers Yield Smiles On Mother’s Day By NINA J. NIDIFFER Staff Writer A pretty arrangement of flowers, a delicate corsage or a sturdy potted plant is bound to make your mother smile on Mother's Day. The folks at Barton’s Flower Shop know this very well. This will be their busiest week of the year, rivaled only by Valentine’s Day. “We’ll be busy all week,” said Shari Barton, who works at the shop owned by Evelyn and Bill Barton. “Valentine’s Day is only one day, but arrangements for Mother’s Day will go out all week.” Lots of popular spring arrangements nill of tulips, irises, daisies, snapdragons and lillies have left the shop in decorative mugs, baskets and vases. All of these can bring your mother more than a day of pleasure if given the proper care. Cut flowers and corsages will stay pretty for more than a week if given regular drinks of water, Mrs Barton said. “A common problem is the plant is allowed to dry out,” she said. “Don’t put an arrangement on top of the television set The heat from the t v. will dry it out. Keep the aran-gement out of drafts, too.” If an arrangement is in a basket or mug, tne flowers will be tucked into a foamy material that retains water. Slip a finger between the foliage and touch the foam. If it’s dry, add water. Say Thanks to YouttMom A flower is worth a thousand words. Send Mom flowers this Mother s Day and let them do the talking. She’ll get the message. Barton’s | The Flower Shop \ 131 York St., SE 648-4991 ;
