Dalgety & co., agents Currie Street Kwiw ? racing notes and notions it by observer Why does a Man race under a Nom de plume what disgrace or deterrent is is to a Man s professional or business career to be associated under Bis own name with the honoured sport of racing which has been dubbed from time immemorial As the sport of Kings if his majesty the King can race under his own name without camouflage Why cannot the Best or worst of his subjects do likewise the big joke about a Good Deal of this Nom de plume business is that the identity of the sportsman is generally Well known to the cognoscenti. And always to the newspaper men who vaguely hint at who he is. Nearly every time they mention his name or refer to the horse. Racing under Nom de plume is not anything like As prevalent As it used to be and the practice is slowly dying out nevertheless it is dying hard Ana within the last week or two there have been a couple of new Nom de plumes crop up which Are equally As ridiculous As any of their predecessors. When this scribe tackled a Well known racing Man who has a big business about the Nom de plume he raced under some time ago the reason was Given that it was not thought desirable to associate the name with the sport or the running of horses. On being cd that if the horses ran fairly and squarely and the Public got a fair Deal in the matter his firm could have no better advertisement he replied that he was not afraid of that but there was always the possibility of something cropping up Over which he could have no control. Readers of course can form the own opinion and come to their own conclusions about this. But it remains for someone to ascribe logical and sound reasons Why with racing on the sound basis it is in this country and under vice regal and distinguished patronage there should still be sportsmen who Are either ashamed or afraid to have their True name associated with the running of their horses before this writer can be made to understand Why Nom de plumes should be necessary. And what say All of you recovering bets from bookmakers. There have been one or two complaints during the past week or so about certain bookmakers not me cling their settings and doing a bit of a wriggle out of their engagements through having been struck much harder than they could stand up Over recent racing. One sportsman ? who was making a lot of noise about a Wager that was not More than 25, and went to one or two newspapers about it has stirred up some slight doubts and cast somewhat of an aspersion on a f group of bookies who through no real fault of their own have been dilatory Over recent settings but All of whom Are honestly solid and sincere in their desire to meet their obligations. If you hear this bad bookmaker bogey Don t give it headroom. The Constitution of our bookmakers clubs and the close supervision exercised Over them by the racing clubs does not permit of any funny business and Fiirst of the tales you hear Are generally the product of a warped brain suffering under some personal grievance or delusion. Fair play is Bonny play. Honor where Honor is due. The ring in this state at any rate is giving a fairer Deal at the present time than it Ever did and t was never really bad. Scohier and derbies. Jim Scobie must Hoid the world s record for having trained Derby winners. Wychie Ley s win in Adelaide last week made his 15th, spread Over the different states As follows Victoria Sis. South Australia five. New South Wales three and West Australia one and the old fellow says that he is not anywhere near done yet. But he does not sem to hold the Strong hands these Days As he used to and it certainly does not matter How gifted a Trainer May be in the preparation of horses if he does not get the material to prepare he cannot do much. Caulfield guineas despite the unfavourable look of the weather and the rain that did come. Guineas Day passed off in great style and the racing fare served up was As Good As we have had for years on the opening Day of the Caulfield cup carnival proper. The crowd was certainly larger than we have seen at the guineas for Many years and there was a fair sprinkling of inter states although Randwick had a clashing meeting. Bookmakers had a bean East As Only one favorite in heroic won All Day and he was at Odds on and did not carry a great Deal in Small wagers. Lord Falmouth who won the steeplechase at 3 a and the Hawk was got the verdict Over Whittier in the stakes were Well backed but whatever won both of these races were Good forthe books and they no Balv did not feel the note or two they had to pay but. A feature of the 1 was heroic t of Imanee in the guineas. There has been nothing just like it Ever seen at Caulfield and the appetite of those at the Heath on saturday has Ben truly whetted for something extra thrilling when the crack three year old next appears in open company. Times recorded during the afternoon were slow after the first race consequent on the deluge which followed it. And in the circumstances very creditable. It is a Long while since this scribe has seen caul held get so muddied in so Short a time and conditions after the were miserable and unpleasant a round. Still after the heroic treat All these discomforts were forgotten and the Good sport even forgot that he was having a losing Day. Whether or no there Are Good times i till to come Aren t there not that this scribe had anything very much to grumble about As two of this column s straight out tips in Para Ane and Toorak the former at 25 a and the latter at 10 s materialised and we have already had fjord from different sources of Good wins. Let us sincerely Hope that All readers shares in this double. It. Would strengthen. Their hands for the rest of the Spring carnival. It does not very Ozien happen that observer can indicate 25 to 1 winners and the matter is Well Worth mentioning notwithstanding the fact that it has already been characterised As Fluke in some quarters. Perhaps it was anyhow we will let it go at that. Iolo welter. Judging by the threatening Clouds ii the storm or Anton rain had t by i in this race both would Huv been rather Good tips. In a Field of 20, King pan was made a 7/2 favorite. With sailing Home and vol Hynia next at g a after both had had a turn at fax Kritsm and had see sawed. To Karby was at 7s, but there was not a great Deal of genuine Money for any of the other runners. The race was won from the Start by the 25 to 1 shot decades who got Sway Well made the Pace a Hummer and had the others straggling Early. It looked for a while As if the Champion Pony Cornflower was going to have a say in things when she ranged alongside but she did not come on and the outsider won by two lengths from sailing Home with vol Hynia a length and a Quarter further Back third. Neither of these two had As Good a run As they might have had but All the same the Winner had a bit too much in hand. To Karby disappointed but he had a lot of weight. The favorite was Noih and not too creditable a one either but May atone very shortly Over perhaps a Shorter distance. Debutant stakes. In this race backers declared blindly for Man acre at g/4, and saved on Archelaus at 3 s and Triangle at 7/2, neglecting the rest of the Field. What would have happened if the going had remained firm and not become flushed by the preceding downpour can Only be conjectured. As it was was a scrambling one with the favorite tossed about at the Start mostly through his own fault and not being Able to get going after whilst Para Ane the Fulham plate Winner speeding along in front like c Beaurepaire in the slush and established a Good enough Lead to last out and beat the flying Man acre by a lengths at the Post with valium who started at 50 in third place. The Winner s quotation of 256 was the most inflated one we have observed for a Long time. Fives would have been nearer the Mark and move consistent with form. Man acre is a Champion nevertheless. And both he arid Archelaus look like fighting out the remainder of the two year old events. Caulfield stakes. Twelve of the Best to the Post in this and it iwas a Good betting race for the books As a lot of Money was wagered on the gift rent candidates before the order of fancy was definitely settled with Whittier at. The head of affairs at a quote of evens which seemed just about right with bold and bad at Sixes and the Hawk next at sevens on the same Mark As night patrol. It appeared strange that the Hawk should be at such a Long figure As Whittier has yet to prove his Clear superiority Over the new Sealander and the wet going did not tend to make the task any easier. When the Field had settled Down Whittier had charge and was going so Well that he looked like stopping in front. Easing Woid was nearest to him also in great style whilst at the half mile bold and bad got to within striking distance but compounded when the might patrol came through with a Good a Titi into second place but Only for a Little was As he quickly cried enough. The Hawk was being Ridden with great judgment by Pike and after the others had had their Little toss at Whittier he was brought on the scene and Over the last Furlong these two Drew away from the Field and fought a grim Battle right to the Post where about the Only person on the course who was certain which had won was the judge and he declared for the Hawk by half a head. Nine out of every ten other race goers thought differently but ther is really Only one Man who can pick the Winner in n close finish and that is the judge. Every fraction of an Angle makes a difference that Manv race goers do not understand j All Sunshine surprised by finishing j third. Whilst both bold and Bau and j night patrol looked As f they wan ted the run. Frances Tress adv and Harvest King went Well and look like Early stake winners. Keep both on your Side. The time for the race was worse than that of the Iolo welter. The state of the track excused that. Steeplechase. Well backed in a mediocre Field lord Falmouth won this by a length from Terai. Who finished surprisingly Well and King Neptune the favorite in third place. King Neptune had bad Luck clouting the Stone Wall rather hard and did rather Well to Finch third. He is since reported to have broken Down badly. At three to one lord Falmouth was backed for one or two Nice parcels and should be capable of yet another steeplechase in summer company. Guineas. This was the race of the Day and the tit bit All were waiting for. Heroic was greeted with round after round of cheers and it is doubtful whether a better muscled three year old Ever pranced round Caulfield. At 6 to 4 on the Price was All right and looked the medium of a Good plunge if one had the Money to do so whilst the rest of the betting was open fives being called Spear Feit and eights sir Digh lock with a big Gap to Royal charter and others at Twenty fives. The Field of twelve runners were a very Classy lot and they All look like winning in their turn. As usual at the Barrier heroic pranced around a bit but the shrewd timing of Hughie Cairns made this look a lot worse than it really was and those close to the Barrier could see what was doing. Cairns was not going to the caught Back or a de on the Barrier and he made the Best justifiable use of heroic s prancing j Barrier up he shot off with the rest j and getting across for a Clear run j it looked As if he had got somewhat the worst of the Start but As a matter of fact he fared As Well As any. Sir Digh Loc a and some Speed made the Pace and running with heroic and his one time conqueror Tersine close up. With Cairns and Lewis a at Chang each other like cat and mouse. Heroic had the Lead into the straight and when Cairns nudged him a Little he striped away from Tersine and won with a lot in hand /,, lengths or i. , with sir Digh lock again in third place one and a half lengths further Back. Spear Felt to fourth and ran a Good race and looks like a distance performer on this run alone. Miss Disraeli May be the three year old Surprise of the season. And. Ran As if she relished it on saturday which is More than she has always done. It was no trouble at All for heroic to win and although champions have shown Pace in the guineas of other years one cannot recollect a performance to compare with his. And or. Corteen seems indeed to have got hold of the wonder Colt of victorian if not aus italian. Racing Toorak Handicap. There were fourteen for this with that smart filly brimming a 9/2 favorite in a Good betting race of fourteen starters at one time it looked As if either beeline or Engle Riceld would be favorite but investments eased off and they finished at Sixes and sevens w r Ith a Little Money for two or three others. The favorite did not get War too Well but rot up to the eld All right but the race was not run honestly. Toorak amongst others were dwelling and when they turned into the straight Pike brought the Toorak horse through and stalling off a Challenge i by beeline won by a neck with the j favorite brimming in third place and King carnival absolutely last. Toorak ran a very Ood race and is Worth keeping an Eye on. Caulfield cup. On account of the persistent Inland out running of so Many fancied and should be fancied candidates it is extremely difficult to make any summing up of Caulfield cup chances. One hoped for some reliable indications from guineas Day racing but the Slushy going militated against this. The cup this year looks like being a Good race with about fifteen possibilities most of them amongst the top weights. The order in which they Are fancied at the moment seems about right although it is hard to see Why to Karby should be where he is or Easingwold so far Back in estimation. There is every possibility of Easingwold effecting a cup coup and such an astute judge As his Trainer Jock Holt still thinks this. In a rugged race like the cup Easingwold is a sound investment in spite of the recent Flash in the pan efforts of other candidates. The Hawk with a Clear run could do the trick and is also a Good bet. Night patrol and Blackwood if not jostled too much i it do things but some of the squibs in the race will hamper them. It May seem strange but anything below 7.7 does not Appeal to this scribe. But there now i am starting to pick the Winner and i Don t intend to do this because i would not be of much use to you. Things Are much too clouded at the moment. My admonition is that the cup will be much More enjoyable if you Don t have a betting interest in it this year. Save your investments for other events where you will find it More easier to pick placed ones. Things May be different on the Day of the race but it is hard to expect that. Bookmakers themselves intend to muddle up cup betting As much As they can and when they set out to do that they generally succeed Don t they to put it candidly i know just enough about the Caulfield cup now which is much More than Many others to know How Little i know and Fri that predicament knowing nothing i like to say nothing.
