Adelaide Southern Cross (Newspaper) - October 3, 1947, Adelaide, South Australia National Library of Australia radio relics Tun shit Idt kill m. F. Mosman the Christian commandment thou Shalt not kill is a Clear we Ruvvo Cal statement. Since you declare christianity to be a pernicious and evil system none of its commandments can have any authority for you. Nor Are you in the least Likely to know better than christians How the Laws of their religion Are to. Be interpreted and applied. The sense of the commandment accepted both by jews and christians and indeed by All sensible people is thou Shalt not commit the very authority imposing that Law de finitely sanctioned the inflicting of the penalty of death for just reasons by lawfully constituted state authorities. Church attitude yet the commandment has been Modi fied by the Christian Church to mean Tow Shalt not kill except in circumstances and conditions favourable to us or to those mho pay for of that is not True. You Are but repeating a charge levelled by communists against the Church a charge for which they have no grounds except their hatred of the Christian religion. Not Only has the Christian Church had no mitigating effect on human evils it can be held to have contributed largely to them. Any opinion can be held by those who want to hold it. But the opinion you give cannot justly be held. It is a biased and prejudiced View and As such deserves simply to be Dis missed. Spanish civil War a striking example was the Treacher Ous rebellion in Spain in 1986, which was claimed by the Church to be a Christian crusade. Communists regard the Spanish up rising led by general Franco in 1936 As a treacherous but it was nothing of the kind. There was no duly constituted government against which to rebel and the Organ ised treachery of the communist aggression aided and abetted by mos cow had to be withstood if Spain was to be saved from becoming a soviet satellite state. And the whole world has reason to be grateful that the communist plan was frustrated in Spain. Catholic support the crusade was supported by car Tholos All Over the world. Not by All catholics. Some were deceived by the highly imaginative propagandist stories Given to the world by journalists and publicists subject to Pink and red sympathies. These people kept up an incessant Campaign of press reports Magazine articles and books All of a tendentious character distorting the facts and trying to Sway Public opinion in the direction of the communists and away from the defenders of Spanish Independence. Atrocities the crusade was waged by Crimi nals specially trained in such brutality that the atrocities heaped on the common people of Spain can be equalled Only by the. Japanese in China. That statement shows that you too were a victim of the world wide communist propaganda at the time. The truth is that the communists had commenced their programme of Vio Lent revolution in 1934. Government after government failed to curb their brutality and atrocities. Only in july 1936, after two years of Ever increasing violence and murder did general Franco backed up by the regular Spanish army both from the Mainland and the colonies step in to save Spain. His soldiers were not criminals. It is True that they met violence with violence but violent re pression of violent injustice is quite lawful. Unjustified atrocities Are not lawful and they undoubtedly occurred on both sides. No one can approve of those. But if the causes in general Are compared that of the Spanish army was justified and that of the communist revolutionaries was not High explosives Christian truth was not allowed to speak for itself. It had to be administered with High explosive you Are talking nonsense. Franco s primary purpose was the preservation of Spain from communist domination. It happens that since the communists selections from the question Box session conducted by Rev. Or. Rumble m.s.c., broadcast from station 2sm every sunday night. Were Bent on destroying the Christian religion with High explosives Franco s defeat of the communists meant the preservation of religion. But that was a by product of the National Wel fare of Spain with which Franco was chiefly concerned. If you dispute my assertion that the communists were Bent on destroying religion with High explosives read the speech made by Gil Robles to the Cortes on june 16, 1936, one month before Franco intervened. In that speech he pointed out that in four months communists had blown up with High explosives Over 400 churches. But there is no need for me to go on. You Are not arguing from facts but from communist prejudices. Scientific control the Christian system is pernicious and evil. In its place must be put a scientific View of human values. You use words without understand ing their significance. For your whole letter is utterly devoid of the scientific spirit. It is filled with hypo theses masquerading As fact imagination instead of reason and. The most glaring errors which could easily have been cleared up by inquiry and re search. The Christian system must be replaced by a scientific control for the Bene fit of am men on a basis of Equality. Though your words do not really suggest it i be an idea that you mean you would like to see Christian Ity abolished in favor of communism. Hierarchies and religious castes Are an anachronism. That s the orthodox communist line. Road to salvation we cannot be saved by prayer formulae ritual charms magic medals myths. The testing time o f two thousand years has proved that. By whom were the things you men Tion put to the test during the past two thousand years we christians have never believed that we can be saved by prayer formulae ritual charms magic medals and myths. On another occasion if you wish i will Tell you what we do believe to be necessary for salvation. Your own belief of course is that we cannot be saved at All. You Are a religion less materialist denying a future life of any kind beyond the grave. And you certainly have no recipe for Sav ing human life from the sufferings in this world. I think you had better look into the Christian religion and really find out something about it. That is my final advice to you. Evil of puzzled mar Oubra in psalm 51, verse i David says against thee thee Only have i to those words from psalm 51 in the protestant Bible Are from psalm 50 in the Catholic Bible. But that is by the Way. How could David say that when the Bible records not Only his sins against god but against his fellow men also because injuries done to our neigh Bors and All forms of wrong conduct Are sins Only in. So far As they offend god. Were there no god there would be no sin. There would be merely unbecoming conduct or socially inconvenient behaviour. Sin arises from the fact that evil conduct of any kind violates the Law of god. That is Why god alone can forgive sin. David knew that he could turn to god Only for that forgiveness. Sin against god j. Walston Granville i believe in god. Bui i wish you would Tell me How anyone can sin against him. If you believed in god in the full Christian sense of the word you would not need to ask that question when you say that you believe in god you evidently mean that the universe must have a cause and that cause must be god. When you profess not to understand How one can sin against god you Overlook the fact that the f Jfe Ator. Of the universe is also Orather who is holy Loving and just and who expects us As his children to be also holy Loving and just. By not attempting that we violate his will offend him., find. Sin., him. Where the injury Sim Raamot do Amy injury to god. That depends upon what kind of injury you have in mind. If you Are thinking of physical injury doing harm to god in his own person and nature you Are right. But that is not the Only kind of injury. There can be moral injury violating the rights of another. And we can certainly violate god s rights by not behaving As he lawfully demands we should do. That we Call sin and it can ruin our relationships with god just As any earthly son can spoil his relationships with his human father by disgraceful conduct. The fellow Man test would it not to More sensible on the other had to teach people that sin is am injury to one s fellow Hernam beings not if you gave the impression that sin was no. More than that. Any malicious injury to one s neigh Bor is of course sinful. But it is primarily an offence against almighty god and Only secondarily against one s neighbor. God has rights Supe rior both to my own and those of my neighbor. As a matter of fact our rights Are vested in his right that we behave justly and charitably to wards one another. If god be omitted and each Man is the source of his own rights then there is no reason Why anyone else should Ever be preferred to our own advantage or convenience. Whatever i might choose to do it would be my right to do. All genuine morality would be at an end. And it does end for people who abandon belief in god. People Are terrified does not the idea that so is am offence against god Only serve to that is not the Only pus be it serves. It teaches us that god is interested in us and that it does matter to him How we behave. It teaches us that he must love the Good or he would not hate evil. That creates in us the desire to love him because he is Good and in turn to seek the Good because we love him. If people do not seek Good if they give themselves to evil con duct then the conviction that this offends god does tend to fill them with fear. But this Only Means that one cannot sin with impunity. Would you hold that people should be Able to sin with impunity punishment Here sin brings its own punishment m this world. Sometimes it does. Far More often it does not at least in any really adequate Way. Some criminals Are discovered and punished by their fellow men but very Many criminals Are Clever enough to escape human Justice and Prosper by their iniquities. Then again you make no allowance for purely personal and private sins which affect not others but self Only. All sins however Pri vate and secret they May be Are offences against god and All will be dealt with by him some Day forcing us either to Appeal to him for mercy or meet with his Justice. If a Man professes to believe in god yet denies this he has no real understanding of the god in whom he professes to believe. Mac of him not a Crank Epping do you Realise How tired of. The churches people Home become i do. No observant person could fail to notice the widespread Drift age from religion in this country. But when you speak of people becoming tired of the churches the question arises of which churches religious indifference is chiefly to be found in the ranks of those whose religion if any would be one. Or other of the forms of protestantism. Having abandoned religion rather than blame themselves people find fault with the churches they have left and include in their criticism the Catholic Church which they have never known. Church gives no Lead to Hateam t is useless for a Lead. They Kame away Cendy to the fact that it to look to the churches having lost interest in religion they have centred their interest entirely on material things of this world. And their idea of the churches giving them a Lead is that the churches should follow them and agree that whatever they want to do is right. Any churches which do so will find that they have gained nothing by such a Concession. Religion less people will be no More interested in such churches because of that. And certainly the Catholic Church won t be guilty of such a be trayal of christianity. That you seem to Realise a his is indicated by your further remarks. Christian truth Why do you continue with your cum session the bigotry of which Only repels people the More i deny that any Trace of bigotry enters into any of my replies. Insistence on a doctrine with which another person happens to disagree is not bigotry. You should preach christianity. I do so. If people Don t recognise it As christianity it is because they have inadequate or positively wrong ideas of what christianity is. If people want a religion which leaves out any reference to god sin the moral Law the Church and the sacraments the judgment of each individual soul and an eternal destiny of heaven or hell then whatever else they want they Don t want christianity. And the Catholic Church certainly is not going to preach a gospel which is not the gospel just to suit them. Social planning any Effort at social planning finds the roman Catholic Church the most reactionary of All. It wants its own Way always. V when you talk of social planning you re dealing with dynamite. Social planning of its very nature tends to regimentation. A totally planned society is totalitarian. To Force people to conform to whatever the state wants them to do is to put an end to personal Freedom. People talk of planning for Freedom even whilst they Are planning against it. And everyone with courage enough to say no is branded As reactionary however moderate the protest May be. The nazi regime in Germany went in for social planning until individuals were scarcely free to speak move or breathe. And for being on the Side of Freedom when Freedom v As out of fashion the Church was condemned and persecuted. Why not co operate Why does the Church always refuse to co operate in a religion less country the Church is not asked to co operate. Plans Are drawn up by government departments without any regard for religious principles or Christian teach ing on social Justice. Having refused to let the Church co operate the government simply says this is what we be decided to do. Do what we want and be no allowance is made for the fact that the Church has principles which simply cannot be sacrificed. Path of duty the Church seems newer to have Learned the lesson taught by the master he that is Mot against us is for the planning of a society on a merely secular basis i by the very fact against the Christian religion. And you forget that if Christ said he that is not against us is for he also said he that is not with me is against if the world ignores Christian principles one of two courses Only is open to the Church either merge with the world and become secularized or go her own Way urging All who remain True to her to serve god in a thoroughly Christian life and save their souls. One thing is certain. The Catholic Church will go on being the True Church preaching the Christian re Ligion whether people will listen or not and whatever the consequences in the Way of resentment or abuse or even of ostracism by millions. Mot War Dorothy s Mother . Are not Sacristy marriages a glaring example of keeping the Faith to ourselves it would not be reasonable to inter pret them in such a Way. If the Catholic Church insists that a mixed marriage must take place not before continued on fags 6
