La Narhi Sven a thurs in v april 10. Praia no Ftp general and widespread interest of the australian catholics in the cause of the missions. Despite the immense undertakings of the Church within Australia they were always ready to support the cause of the missions. this excellency said that it might have been expected that with the loss of the National director there would have been some temporary set Back but the work had continued to Prosper. He praised the diocesan directors and the promoters of the propagation of the Faith for what they were doing on behalf of the society. Only by their co operation and collaboration was it possible for the Mission societies to extend. The National director depended on every single individual one of them and he was immensely pleased to feel that they were willing to accept that responsibility. In every diocese through out Australia there was something being done for the missions perhaps in some it would be possible to do More but that would be the work of the future. His excellency thanked the National director for the Good wishes of those associated with the pontifical Mission societies and said that Dur ing his forthcoming visit to Rome he hoped to be Able to place before the superiors of the societies the full record of the valuable work being done in Australia. Increase in returns the National director in his report pointed out the changes Over the past twelve months the resignation of mgr. Hainan to whom the pontifical Mission societies owed so much and the Large number of diocesan directors who had been changed. In spite of these vast changes and the difficulties of the reconstruction period god had blessed the work and the re turns showed an increase. The propagation of the Faith showed a Gross increase of 2,756 Over that of 1945. For the most part throughout Australia there were in creases Melbourne being outstand ing with a Rise of 1,608 and Wil Cannia Forbes with an increase of 93 per cent on 1945 returns. The decreases were found in dioceses which had Large influxes of people during the War but had now returned to a Normal population. The director then examined the question of memberships which Are the foundation of the society. In some parts where there is a constant Appeal this figure is approaching saturation Point in other areas especially some country parts there is room for a Large increase. For this it is necessary that there be an Appeal to the people to join. Membership is not just the giving of a donation As might be done on Mission sunday. The director then examined the method of consolidating the position in the cities especially by regular appeals. In respect to the holy childhood the director pointed out that the year had not been so favourable As 1945, yet at the same time from a membership Point of View it was Satis factory. Missions Magazine sought and read the society of St. Peter apostle showed remarkable increase mainly due to the propaganda done through the publication Catholic on the administration Side the Nar tonal director pointed out the in creased expenditure but considered that it was not excessive. In part it was accounted for by the All round Rise in prices and the unsettled conditions of a Short Market. The Large increase in costs of the publication was due to the improvements effected following upon the withdrawal of National emergency regulations Catholic missions was now a Mission Magazine sought and read. Further the societies had printed a regular monthly paper for the children this was a new venture and entirely justified. Statement of receipts the statements revealed that the propagation of the Faith for Australia showed a net return of 43,530/2/8, As against 41,305/9/11 for 1945. The society of the holy childhood returned 18,265/11/8, As against 19,161/1/3 in 1.945. The society of St. Peter apostle improved from 2,174/16/5 to 5,227/3/8. Thomas the work of the National Secretary and the diocesan directors through out the Commonwealth under whose encouragement the part of Australia in respect to the missionary cause would increase and multiply. Diocesan directors reports the reports read by each diocesan director showed How in different dioceses the work was being carried in and was progressing. For. Mccosker of Sydney mentioned that the spirit of the Catholic people towards the missions was More generous than Ever for not Only was there a magnificent response to the pontifical works but that there was also great help being Given to other missionary enterprises. For. Byrne of Brisbane explained the Peculiar difficulties of Brisbane in respect to the return to Normal conditions. The figures of previous years had been increased by the Large army population residing in the North. For. Gleeson of Ballarat spoke of the work in his diocese where he depended so much upon the co opera Tion of the priests and people As he was not free to the same extent As other full time directors. He said that every Parish had its promoters and they were zealous in their work and to them especially and to his predecessor mgr. Kenelly who had established the society in the diocese every Praise was due. For. Reis of Melbourne said that the increase of Melbourne during the past twelve months whilst it was encouraging still could not be regarded As the Complete Effort. He saw possibilities of further increase but it would mean intensive Organis ing. He considered that the National office could assist greatly not Only by appealing for memberships but by providing diocesan directors with More and More propaganda. Cardinal s Praise his Eminence Cardinal Gilroy congratulated the diocesan directors upon their reports and Felt extremely gratified to think that the pontifical societies were in such capable and Safe hands. He was sure that they together with the other diocesan directors not present at the meeting would carry Back a message of encouragement and Call for new Zeal. His Eminence said that Australia was doing excellent work in extending and increasing the pontifical Mission societies. His Grace archbishop Duhig sup ported his Eminence and expressed his appreciation of the Point raised by the diocesan director of Mel Bourne. He Felt that a Good Deal More could be done in the Way of propaganda especially by medium of the Catholic newspapers. He would like to see a space set aside each week for news of the missions and the Mission societies.
