Adelaide Southern Cross (Newspaper) - March 21, 1947, Adelaide, South Australia National Library of Australia immense god Ireland s Faith praised on St. Patrick s Day on the feast of St. Patrick Patron of the archdiocese pontifical High mass was celebrated in St. Francis Xavier s Cathedral by his Grace the archbishop. There was a crowded congregation largely of school children. The mass was Sung by the children and the students of St. Francis Xavier s Seminary. The archbishop delivered the occasional address. Jophe archbishop said that 1,500 years ago St. Patrick had been sent by Pope Celestine to Ireland to con Vert the Pagan and _ War like people who inhabited that land. In a very Short space of time the whole nation was converted and for 350 years thereafter rejoiced in the title of the Island of saints and scholars. Until the Norse invasion at the end of the 8th Century Ireland was both in learning and missionary enthusiasm the Pioneer of european pro Gress. Within were numerous and famous schools so famous indeed that they attracted Many students from other lands without Irish Bishops occupied sees in France Ger Many Switzerland and Italy while a Chain of Irish monasteries stretched from Brittany in France to Bulgaria in Eastern Europe. The names of More than 200 Irish saints were placed upon the Calendar of Christen Dom. Dark night then came a Long night of dark Ness. From the end of the 8th Cen Tury to the 12th there was the struggle with the danish and Norse invaders. Following that came a seven Century period of conflict much of it a struggle for the very survival of the Catholic Faith in Ireland. For 150 years the system of penal Laws imposed on Ireland by the invader was a thing of such horror that it has been described by a famous writer As a machine of Wise and elaborate contrivance As Well fitted for the oppression impoverishment and de gradation of a people and the debase ment in them of human nature itself As Ever proceeded from the perverted ingenuity of effects of penal Laws the penal Laws prohibited All Public Catholic ceremonies and forbade the ordination of. Priests. All Bishops and members of religious orders were banished and threatened with death if they returned. All catholics were ordered under pain of Fine to inform against priests though to their credit this was very rarely done. The state offered Money and Public pension to any priest who became a protestant. The Catholic laity were deprived of All political rights. They St. Patrick apostle of Ireland and Patron of Adelaide archdiocese were forbidden to act As teachers. Forbidden to have their children educated except by protestants debarred from obtaining any Public employ ment or practising any profession except that of Medicine. They were not allowed to hold property in land and could not act As guardians of their own children. If a Catholic became a protestant All was changed. From a slave he became a master. Hearts not Faith crushed these Laws lasted in great part until a Little Over a Century ago. For 150 years they crushed the hearts of the people but not their Faith. As a result of this persecution a Stream of exiles flowed to other lands including our own Australia where they helped to build the Church. In their own nation though a race of slaves reduced in numbers they stood by god and their Catholic Faith. Their Bishops and priests stood by them and they stood by their spiritual leaders. Immense and steadfast loyalty there is scarcely a parallel in the whole world concluded or. Beovich of such immense and steadfast loyalty to god and his Church in face of bitter relentless persecution for to Day Ireland is As Catholic As in the Days of St. Patrick. Ireland is a nation that lives in god whose people live by their Catholic Faith. St. Patrick is the apostle of ire land. He converted a whole nation and did his work so completely that he could not have a successor in it. In his life time with the Pope s Sanc Tion he organised the Church establishing dioceses and parishes he ordained priests from among the Irish people and consecrated Over 300 Bishops. He prayed ceaselessly and fasted and did penance that the people would never falter in or betray their Faith. God has heard his prayer. St. Patrick is also our Patron the Patron of this archdiocese. We need his intercession now and in the years ahead. May his powerful help extend to our people and their children and their children s key witness in spy probe Jayhe charge made recently by Louis f. Budenz former editor of the communist daily worker of new York before the House committee investigating in american activities at Washington that the. Russian secret police Are at work in the United states and Canada is further substantiation of the same charge made before the Canadian Royal commission which investigated russian spy activities in Canada. Igor Guzenko 27-year-old cipher clerk at the russian embassy in Ottawa was the Star witness in the Canadian spy probe. He testified that the n.k.v.d., the secret political police of the soviet Union have a powerful organisation in Canada. Like or. Budenz at Washington he also declared that the communist International or comintern had not been abandoned. Guzenko declared before the Royal commission holding Forth at International conferences with voluble statements about peace and Security the soviet government is simultaneously preparing secretly for the third world War. To meet this War the soviet government is creat ing in democratic countries including Canada a fifth column. The following Are excerpts from the final report of the Royal commission he Guzenko revealed to us the existence of a conspiratorial organisation operating in Canada and other countries. He has not ohly Jold us the names and cover names of the organisers the names of Many of the canadians fio were caught in. The net to employ the phrase used by the documents and who acted Here in Canada As agents but he has also exposed much of the set up of the or Gamsa Tion As Well As its Aims and methods Here and abroad. Not isolated attempts there can be no doubt in our minds that these attempts very often successful to obtain Here secret and confidential information cannot be qualified As casual or isolated. They Are not merely the acts of Over zealous soviet employees anxious to inform their own government. The set up of this organisation the Canadian Royal commission re port continues is the result of a Long preparation by trained and experienced men who have come Here for the express purpose of carrying of spying activities and who have employed All the resources at their disposal with or without corruption to fulfil the tasks assigned to them. Some of these men have undoubtedly been Well schooled in espionage and fifth column organisational methods and in political and psychological development tech Niqi ies arriving in Canada in 1943, Gou Zenko was surprised at the Complete Freedom of the individual which existed there. The false representations made in Russia about the demo cratic countries could not stand up to facts. The election especially sur prised him and in Russia he declared the system of elections appeared As a mockery of the Conception of free election s. Convinced that such double faced politics of the soviet govern ment towards the democratic coun tries do not conform with the interests of the russian people and endanger the Security of Civilise Tion Grezenko told the commis Sion i decided to break away from the soviet regime and to announce my decision today Guzenko is the most closely guarded Man in Canada first because he will be the Star witness against canadians who helped in these subversive activities and secondly because Canada is determined that he and his family will live to enjoy theft new found democracy and Freedom.
