Lya. Flour ? Robt r Torrens. Collector. Collegiate institution. To the editor of the South australian Register. Sir would you allow me space in your influential journal to make certain enquiries and remarks relative to a subject of much importance bearing on the interests of a Hii Rolv in Wilif. Institution ? i beg to enquire first whether the clerical master of the collegiate institution is permitted by the statutes to engage in ecclesiastical or parochial duty / secondly if so with what limitation or restriction ? permit me to remark that the Rev. Or. Allom the second master and superintendent of the boarding establishment has been absent from the school for some time on the ground of severe illness but although the Rev. Gentleman has not yet resumed his Scholastic duties he was enabled to take duty on sunday last at Walkerville Church. I should have great reluctance to draw attention to this circumstance did 1 not feel that the interests of this excellent institution May suffer. The exertions of the Reading desk and the pulpit Are As arduous As those of the school room and i cannot therefore understand what valid excuse there can be for an evasion of those duties belonging to the latter. However leaving this Point to the determination of those to whom the Rev. Gentleman is amenable for his conduct i would observe that the regular performance of ecclesiastical duties by a master of the school is at All times to be deprecated As obviously conflicting with the regular discharge of Scholastic duty especially in the Case of a gentleman who is also at the head of a boarding establishment such engagements inevitably clashing with his obligations to attend to the religious culture of those pupils committed to his care. I would further remark that the Rev. Or. Allom is still the paid pastor of Walkerville the duties of the Church during his indisposition being supplied by a disengaged Clergyman the Rev. Or. Platt. I beg to subscribe myself sir yours truly Parens and a subscriber. Adelaide 1st october 1851. / we shall be Happy to give insertion of any authorized explanation in reply to the above. De. Sir. Gawler town. We have received a communication from Gawler town complaining of the prevalence in that township of offences against person properly and the Public peace and furnishing detailed particulars of several recent occurrences of each kind. It is stated that parties decline prosecuting in consequence of the. Heavy expense and loss of time that must be incurred involving the necessity of a journey to Adelaide twice if not thrice. The amount of business closed for during the week has been too trifling materially to affect the Market rates. Importers Are firm with Eastern produce. Few goods Are now forced off privately5 or publicly but where it is found requisite to close sales the sacrifice is generally considerable. Our Market is not heavily stocked and a Large portion having been Laid in above present prices being bought Here at High rates or imported from the neighbouring colonies. The want of activity now existing is altogether owing to the Dii Mculty of procuring Carriage even at exorbitant rates. The greatest obstruction to our further Progress consists in the slow coach system of internal communication. With ample Means at their disposal the colonists have been exceedingly tardy in establishing a speedy Mode of transit through the Interior. Eventually British capitalists will creep in and reap a Rich Harvest which their want of Energy has permitted to escape them. R. Barnett broker. Sydney August 30. Melbourne sept Kier h wheat 10s.
