Adelaide Saturday Journal (Newspaper) - September 8, 1923, Adelaide, South Australia National Library Australia canaries and other Cag Birds. B to by Yorkshire. Canary rings. The first Young canaries the season will in All probability soon be making their appearance and i would strongly advise every breeder to ring each Young one As soon As old enough usually about the eighth to tenth Tuy. By so doing one can keep an accurate record the parentage every Young one a very necessary part systematic Breeding. Ahyoung Birds shown in the yearling classes at our shows must necessarily be rung with the current year s ring and even if not intended for exhibition a rung Bird always commands More respect and a better Price than one that is not so distinguished. The South australian Canary and Pigeon society s official ring is now available and May be obtained from the Secretary . J. T. Martin Harrington Street Prospect. A White Canary. During the week i had the pleasure seeing the first pure White Canary it has been my privilege to see. It in not an Albino As it has not the Pink eyes Peculiar to All albinos but has been bred from a fixed Strain this new Colour. It must not be confused with the Small mealy coloured almost White specimens that one sometimes sees in aviaries where the canaries have been inbred for generations it is an absolutely pure White and a 6trong, vigorous Bird. I should be very pleased to hear any breeder who has a similarly coloured Canary. The californian Quail. A pair Quail added to a collection Small Birds in an aviary helps towards the interest the series in representing a Genus Birds that is Seldom kept in confinement and also from a utilitarian Point View in helping to keep the floor space cleared scattered food and thus to discourage the visits mice to the enclosure. Besides they Are very pretty and easily kept. Their successful Breeding is not a difficult matter if the services a Small clean legged broody Bantam Hen Are enlisted to Hatch the eggs and rear the Chicks. These Birds although much entailed Bear a close resemblance to the common Partridge in form and mannerisms. Details markings. The adult cock californian Quail is chiefly Brownish in colouring the Back being darkest while the breast is More Suffish in tint and the sides Olive greyish Brown each Feather having a narrow edging Black which gives the Bird a really Beautiful appearance. The Crest and face Are Black the latter bordered with White and a White band the head Between the eyes. The Hen lacks the Black areas and has a White Throat instead a Black one. She is altogether 1 paler and White underneath while the face is speckled with Grey similarly to the Back the neck. This species along with its two near relatives Gambel s Quail and Douglas s Quail hails from North America being commonest is the Western parts Mexico. A prolific Bird. _ the californian Quail is readily responsive to the influence that go towards domestication abundant food shelter from enemies and suitable habitat for the rearing its Young. A the Case individual hens the sheltered conditions aviary life tend to increase fecundity and As Many a 30 40 eggs have been produced by a single Hen although in a native state 10 to 16 eggs is Given As the average clutch and two broods Are the exception. The eggs vary but the usual Type is Yellowish greyish White marbled with dark Brown and they Are extremely pointed at the smaller end. Setting the eggs. My own experience is All against the successful incubation the eggs by the Quail herself although others that i know have been More fortunate. The Best plan is undoubtedly to place the egg under a quiet Bantam Hen. Inc Tiou lasts 22 Days and the Young like Hose All Galli Naseous Birds arc Able run about when hatched. When tha Chicks Hatch out leave them undisturbed with tie Hen for 24 hours then remove her with them to a clean Coop with half Inch wire netting. If the weather is very wet and cold keep them under shelter for a Day two but if it is Fine let them have All the Sunshine there is they simply revel in it. Baked custard Canary and Millet seed and a few Well cleaned Gentles should form their menu for the first few Days gradually weaning them to Small Chick food but maintaining the daily Supply Gentles. Finely minced lettuce similar Green food should be freely supplied also very Fine and shorn Lawn clippings May be Given. Nesting Sites. When the Quail wants to Lay she will scratch a hollow in the most secluded Corner the aviary flight she can find. The Quail usually lines her nest with some bits Hay grass rootlets and if not interfered with will Lay her eggs regularly mostly every Day in the nest she has made. If disturbed when the aviary is in a rather Public situation the eggs will very Likely be Laid just anywhere so that a constant watch has to be kept for them and they should course be removed As soon As noticed. Keep them in a Cool place until enough have been collected to set under a Bantam. If a Bantam is used make a nest for her with soft Hay dried grass in As shallow a Box As possible so that the Hen can walk almost straight to the eggs for if she has to jump downwards to the a Rirs she May easily break them for the shells As a Rule Are rather fragile.
