Adelaide Mail (Newspaper) - September 19, 1936, Adelaide, South Australia National Library of Australia Saxon Prince beats the favorite Mellion at Gawler conducted by Trafalgar takes Lead Early and maintains advantage All the Way Mool Oogan wins tire year old from Gold Tress taking the Lead Early in the race Saxon Prince 5/1 maintained his advantage in the Centenary Handicap at Gawler this afternoon and went on to win easily from Mellion and Highland fling. Nobody s son 6/1 succeeded m the hurdles from Bolton and relay and in the . Hunters steeplechase sax Munden 2/1 Defeated Eagle Vale and court Jester. Gawler jockey club conducted its Centenary meeting this afternoon. There was a Good attendance. Oat of respect to or. J. J. Mortimer who died yesterday flags on the course were at half Mast and jockeys in the Centenary Handicap wore Black bands. Or. Mortimer was for Many years chairman of the club. The Brush hurdle was the first race of this pcs nil on the course. Unfortunately there was a casualty As Royal Anton fell in front of the stands and breaking a leg he had to be destroyed. After Amain had carried on most of the running nobody s son who was at a surprisingly Good Price raced past him. For the remainder of the journey nobody s son had matters All his own Way. Down the Back How Ever he was challenged first by Bol ton and then by Bier Rose. Nobody s son proved too Good and he was Well Clear at the last two hurdles and easily Defeated his stable mate. Bolton. With relay third. St. Daius a visitor from Perth trailed the Field for most of the Way. A smart Field did duty for the bar net three year old Handicap a new race for Gawler. Included in the Field were several Derby candidates. Gold Tress and Brave lad dominated the betting and while they filled the minor positions neither looked like reaching Mool Oogan who showed a vast improvement on his displays since he won the Adelaide guineas. Shaking off Belus in the Early stages Mool Oogan had something in Reserve to resist a late Challenge from Gold Tress and he won rather easily. Brave lad lost a Little ground at the Start and at one stage be was last. Belus did not see out the seven and a half furlongs As Well As expected. Slam made his reappearance but was never a possibility. Saxon Prince succeeds Mellion was a Well supported favorite for the Gawler Centenary Handicap and although he put up an excellent race he could not quite reach Saxon Prince who practically led through out Fajardo was running third for most of the Way. But Over the last two fur Longs he made a poor response. Tre Santon having his first run for some time made a promising display while after dropping Back last at one stage Highland fling put in a dashing run in the straight and just Cut Perth out of third Money. Saxon Prince has been a most consistent performer for his owner Trainer cd. Matson. The stipendiary stewards made in quiries concerning the instructions Given to j. Sharp rider of night opera in the Centenary Handicap. The owner of the Mare or. J. Tai stated that be instructed Sharp not to go to the front at the Start. In carrying out those instructions Sharp in the opinion of the stewards overdone them and was severely censured for not using better judgment. There was a solid demand for Peau in the Wakefield Handicap and he ended up a better favorite than cd unto. Dentex set out to Lead All the Way and along the Back he was Well Sepa rated from presage Gunton and sul Lane. To away was also prominent but Pimp eau was a Long Way Back. Dentex continued with the Lead round the turns and into the straight but at Che Home turn he was tackled by gun tos and the pair immediately settled Down for a stirring finish. First gun bos was in front and then Dentex. The two passed the Post almost in line and the judge decided in favor of gun Fos. The finish was so close that few envied the judge his task of. Separating them. Gunton is a useful performer and he is in his element on a track like Gaw Ler sax Munden Best Hunter one of the scratchings from the Hunters steeplechase was Wau who got Down in the. Float and had to be left behind at the stables. Sax Munden was always favorite and with one exception his jumping was faultless. About three fences from Home he reached badly for the obstacle and this enabled Eagle Vale to head him off. Others prominent in running were Princess Arsinoe and court Jester. Princess Arsinoe fell at the last obstacle when Well beaten. At this Point sax Munden and Eagle Vale were disputing the Lead and Al though sax Munden ran wide at the Home turn his rider or. K. Best quickly gathered him up and tackling Eagle Vale again in the run to the judge the favorite won running away. Court Jester battled on into third place. It was a highly interesting race and the finish a Good one. Princess Arsinoe was killed when she fell in the . Hunters steeplechase at Gawler. Anton Grange fur Seal and lady Ormsby were the main scratchings from the Bose worthy welter for which Brave colors was a warm favorite. Although glorify was quoted at 6 to 1 Early in the betting heavy support caused him to finish second favorite. Brave colors was first to move and he led the Field along the Back with Una Cavell and Duello his nearest pursuers. Glorify made a Quick move rounding the first turn and at the straight Entrance he was in a position to tackle Brave colors. Half Way Down the straight glorify had full charge and he won fairly easily from the favorite. Donning did Well to secure third Money while Belinda who was tast practically throughout came Home smartly and disputed fourth place with Una Cavell glorify won the same race last year.
