ago theUKiosf reprinted from the Creston a story of the settlement of our northeast corner township because it dealt with inci dents of interest to all our readers The editor of the UNIOS did not ex amine theartiele critically or he would taye discovered the unfairness of the ticture presented of Nevinyille as she s today Mr J H Kerr and old Nevinvillian kindly furnishes some cor rections lu a recent issue of the UNION was what purported to be a history of iJevinville Iowa copied from the Cres oa American in which the writer was jroBslv in errorpa moat all poiats oh which he touched or was utterly re gardless of truth in bis statements To any one who is acquainted with Jio town of Nevinville it would appear hat the article referred to was calou ated to do aa injury to the place The writer begins by saying that around the public square are several dilapidated buildings none of them fit or occupancy which is wholly false There is not one dilapidated or unoc cupied builfling facing the square in Neyinville or in any otherpart of the town to the writers kapwleSge c The article inthe the dea that the whole town was isi ii di iapidatedcoadition ruined and gone to decay It is also stated that there is not a decent residence in the town and the only enterprises ar0 a store a school house and a blacksmith shop Just why any one should wish to cry down the little town of NeviriBO un justly is more than I can comprehend Without going into detail with re gard to the fraud which was perpetrat ed on the early settlers of Kevin bythe origual platters of the ground which he American de3cribes copiously iorrectly 1 wish to say that setter inland business point in south west Iowa than this sameNevinville There is and has always been a brisk mercantile business carried on there patronized by the surrounding country which is as good community as there is in the state The 1arniers are not provincial and behind he times They have good souses painted inside and but good barns and fences and an air of thrift and prosperity yervades the general atmosphere and inthe townofNevin proper in whichthe Ainerican says that shere cannot be found a house fit for occupancy There are as good resi dences as there is in anyordinary town of its size A T Joy E T Delauey Dr Gregory J R Bonar Bonar S M Beebe Mrs Con rad Mr Cox J Foster and anumber of others all have large commodious modernrsklences witEneat well kept nfH i Mi Mora f A room school house ana two substantial chnrch buildings all well at evidence that the citizens are abreast of the times in morality and education But perhaps the most glaring injus tice was in the Americans manner 6J summing up the industries of the place The leading mercantile firm carries large line of general merchandise and has been in business there for twelve years That they have been successful goes without saying Joseph Fisher is another of Neyins merchants and does a general mer cantile business in the old corner storewhich was occupied so long F L Spurgeon now of Orient This old building has quite a history of its ownwhichI have not space here to enter into But so far from being dead and buried relic of the past as the American would have us believe ii is in preservation iyetand chock full of goods owned by the genial Mr Fisher who in his short mercantile ex perience of two years has built up s large and profitable trade Mr Bar low of Carl has recently put in s branch store in the building formerly occupied by D C has placed it under the efficient manage uieut of Mr Patterson and is doing a good business J R Bonarsince his appointmentas postmaster has built a neat new postomce building Mr Bo nar is thriving Business in the pump and windmill line John Jones purchased the meat market o Mr Lee sometime during the past sum mer and is carrying on a profitable trade in that line This business also new building erected within the past two years Jobn Foster pro prioior of the Nevin hack lino carries the didly mail between Nevin anc Creston He also has a passenger anc package traffic That he has stuck to tlve business for five years is evideuw that lie has macleit pay Dr Gregory clie resident physician has a good pay ing practice and would not exchange Nevinville for any field of practice he IKIS yot seen The village blacksmith is not wanting to make the natura makeup of a thrifty country village complete J Lambright has run the Nevm blacksmith shop capably anc profitably for thn past four years There is a strong post of the G A E and Womans Relief Corps and a lodge of the Loyal Mystic Legion and on Sundays tlio M E und the Congrega tional churches are well filled Nevin villo nvikos no pvetensn toward boiug sifiliv They know that they arc no on tlift rjtilroiid and can never hope tc u more than an inland village anc trading point They became reconciled to this years iiutl made up their minds that siace they could never be more than a vil Inge thoy would be the very best vil Inge that could be made out of the ma terial at hand In this they have sue coedcd admirably and have a mode country town a Village of homes wher nearly every householder owns th homo he occupies and takes pride in keeping it up I varily believe tha thoru ire few places iu the state when peace and harmony and enntentmen abound as they do in Adam MKeuii is perhaps the oldest settler Hv ing in Nevni at The report was brought to Corning last Tharspay of the suicide of Joseph Bartlett near Nevinville at noon that day It seems that Bartlett had been en gaged in digging potatoes on the farm wfjere he a bullet into his brain dying almost instantly Messen gers were sent for medical he was beyond holp notified and he at once wenVSFo the Bartlett home to investigate the affair Bartlett was a young man under thir ty years of age He was married fonr or five years ago and has resided near Nevin since that time generally being engaged in farming Prior to his niar riagehelived with hia parents on his fathers farm two miles west of Nevin He was an industrious young man gen erally of a happy cheerful disposition and be seemed to prosper reasonably well It is reported that he and hia wife did not Jive happily together and that domestic trouble caused him to take hia own life Others are of the opinion that he brooded over financial troubles until he became temporarily insane and ended his
