affairs at the South even now when a generation has pass ed since her battlefields wore red under the pitying heavens My friends it was far easier to free the slave by majesty of law and pow er of sword than it was to take that slave and under now conditions for mastor and man work out the labor problem of the South It was far easier to crush secession and weld tho Roman firmly together than tohenl the bitterness in the hearts of the conquer ed and kindle anew the liroa of patriot ism n nd love of country A disease that has been years in fastening itself upon the human body takes years and skill and patience to eradicate The Northern soldier took up his life at the end of the war tinder essentially the same conditions that ho loft when He went into the army and he brought to his work the elation which conies with success the courage born of vic tory But the soldiers of tho South faced problems hard to solve In nny ease doubly so when defeated money Republican County
