1871 Scientific Definition Far Different from Ordinary Baby Show A Better Baby Contest in which prizes will be awarded to babies ot three years or under not for mere beauty but for physical and mental development the first contest of its kind to bo held in the state is now an assured attraction for the Yolo County Fair The contest is a popular tific movement to encourage the rais ing of healthier and better babies Mere looks will not count The babys physique and mental showing will be the points upon which the premiums will be awarded A committee of representative cians from various parts of Yolo coun ty will name tlie winners of the prizes These physicians who have consented to act as judges are Doctors Blevins and Hasor Woodland Dr Bates of Davis and Dr Haile of Win ters Handsome prizes will be offered b the fair association and no fee will bi required of Kny mother There will b no expense attached except that born by the management of the fair Yolo county first in the state to adopt tlie Simpson Lumber Com pany with headquarters in San Fran cisco Mr Soulo is also extensively en gaged inthe lumber and timber busi ness M BOY Clarence Murphy Son of P Murphy Does Long Survive Attack of Appendicitis J C Dickson a resident of Wood land for forty years died suddenly and unexpectedly Thursday evening at liis residence in tlie southeastern lim its ol the city Death occurred about 1 oclock no one at lie residence with him at the time the fatat sum mons came except Ilia little grand daughter Nichols of Sacra mento He was sitting out in the yard reading a paper and the little girl was playing on the porch Suddenly the lillle granddaughter looked up and her grandfathers head reclin ing backward on lie chair she rush ed did not answer and becoming fright ened she ran across the street to no some of the neighbors They rushed over without delay and sent for a physician One responded prompt but there was no need for his ser vices as lie pronounced the body life less A sudden attack of heart failure was undoubtedly the cause Deceased had been afflicted with heart trouble for years and on one occasion about twelve years ago he came near pass lug away in a similar attack Recent ly he bad been much better and not long ago he remarked that he never felt better for years The funeral will be held from the family residence Saturday afternoon at 4 oclock Mr Dickson was u native of Keys ville Clinton county New York 73 years t months and 22 days age When three years of age he removed with his parents to Illinois where he spent his early years When 19 years of age the Dickson returned to California with his They first went to Vacla Tint remained there but a short time and then came to Woodland Mrs died here 26 years ago Mr Dickson enlisted from during tiie civil war He was a mem ber of the Wm H Seward Post G A H and the veterans will deeply mourn his loss Deceased is survived by two daugh ters Mrs C Nichols of Sacramento aud Miss Blanche Dixon of this city und one son Clarence 0 Dickson Ht 11 also survived by Several brothers ind who reside in the east Air Dickson was a warm friend and a good neighbor He judged no one harshly never attributed unworthy
