Woodland Daily Democrat (Newspaper) - September 26, 1912, Woodland, California WEEKLY ESTABLISHED 1859 WOODLAND CALIFORNIA THURSDAY EVENING SEPTEMBER 20 1012 DAILY ESTABLISHED Speech of Eloquence Delivered to an Audience of Twenty Thousand People William J Bryan the magnet that drew thousands of people from all parts of California to edy and ended like a comedy At first I was afraid theyd kill each other then I was alarmed leat they laugh Donald M Browning and Miss Zelia Eiers Both of Sacramento Wednesday night and the themselves to death audience that assembled at Buffalo I When that improved piece of ma Park was the largest that ever beard the steam roller Invented by Colonel Roosevelt in 1908 operated by skilled labor got to work it smoothed out everything so nicely that those who were run over enjoyed it as much a public speaker at one meeting in the history of this state Every shade of political opinion was represented in vast audience This was apparent from the cheers that greeted the mention of every can When appeared the WHS deafening and for several minutes he said he believed that Taft is an hon est man the applause was generous The mention Roosevelt also evoked a healthy response and a brief La Follette the pioneer progressive Republican was cheered lustily Whenever Governor Wilsons name was mentioned a wave i of ap plause swept over he audience and the tribute to his character ability and high purposes which was tlie cli max of Mr Bryans was greet ed with tumultuous applause Bryan Himself an Inspiration But Mr Bryans own personality the magic spell of his matchless ora charm of his won voice the simplicity uut beauty of his language and aptness of his Illustrations furnished the real inspir allon of the remarkable enthusiasm that prevailed from tlie beginning to the close of the meeting The atten tlon given to Mr Bryan the demand that he continue the sponta Miss tilers and Donald son Browning of this city were united in marriage in Sacramento this after noon The particulars of the wedding are not at baud but we are certain as the drivers Toward the close It that the happy event was witnessed by vas running so mechanically perfect hat one could absent himself from the convention hall without losing track of the proceedings Those who cried against it were most vigorous when t exceeded the speed limit Bosses Differently Treated of wit to profound serious ness were outward manifestations of the most remarkable ovation ever The principal difference between j and Baltimore was that at the bosses came to rule and control the convention and they did rule and control the Republican con vention At Baltimore tlie bosses came with the intent of ruling and controlling the convention but they ere driven from the whip ped and sorely beaten like to proceed in a logical man ner I might begin with Wilson as a first term candidate for he will serve a first term if elected Then I might take Taft as a second term candidate for he will serve a second term If elected and then finally I might dis cuss Roosevelt as a third term candi date for if lie is elected he will serve as long as he can But to suit my own ends I prefer to take another or der I will first as the man who Is president then 1 will talk Roosevelt ns the man who has been the brides parents Mr and Mrs W H Biers and their son and several of Mr Brownings relatives The young couple plan to leave Sac by boat for San Francisco this evening the latter city they will leave for San Diego Los Angeles and other points south travel ing the steamer route They expect to be gone about a month on their honeymoon trip and on their return will take up their residence on the Robert Browning ranch The bride is the only daughter of Mr and Airs W H Eiers of this city She is a native of Woodland and has lived all of her life in this city Her education has been received in the grammar schools and the high school from which she is a graduate Mr Browning Is the fourth son of R W Browning He Is a native of Yolo county and has spent all of his life here His education was received in tlie grammar schools For several years he has been associated with bis father and brothers in farming west of Woodland on one of the best farms In Hie county Mr Browning and bis bride are both very popular and have a legion of friends who will be anxious to ex tend congratulations and best wishes he president A Kind Word for Taft Taft ig now the Clean thoroughbred styles that impress at first sight and give service thats as good as their looks You fian save You can sm given a public man in the history of of these United States I this state know him personally 1 believe him Mr Bryan Is peculiarly gifted ln thoroughly honest and a man of good many respects He has a remarkable T believe he means well I face one that Is strongly marked by ne wm a0 what be believes to features Indicating a distinctive the very or tlie people intelligence sympathy while the country sincerity There is depth purity and on He does not trust the peo ilie charm of music in his wonderful He fears thay make mistakes voice and Its penetrating power carand rathel ney shall do that he even his conversational tones so ers to them himself The that the auditor a block difference between and away has an equal advantage of the is that Taft is constitution who sits at his feet j I ally distrustful of the people while No greater tribute was ever paid Hojsevell js over 10 n American citizen than was paid o himself Taft opposes the to the great Commoner by to the intelligence virtue you Balu glau to see you i and patriotism of the people that a perfect party accord Four year man of the genius capacity sincerity lgo indorsed the anil exulted character of Mr Bryan tne aw making it nece hns three times been defeated for to publish campaign expenses b Went of the United States PARTS OF THE ADDRESS We had confidently expected to pub lish Mr Bryans speech In full this week in supplement form but those who understand the limitations of offices outside of the big elites will readily appreciate the dif ficulties of such a taak which we have been reluctant to abandon at least for the present Although Mr Bryans speech bristled with telling epigrams no synopsis could do In his history of the two conven tions he said 1 attended both and In KO doing had a considerable advantage over Roosevelt inasmuch ns I was on the inside of two conventions while Teddy was on the outside of but one During all the hubbub of the Chi cago convention and during the argu ments of the two conflicting factions I was not biased in the least And again I had an advantage over my journalists because of being belter acquainted with both candidates and knowing what they about one another was Quite naturally I gave the widest publicity to their ex change of remarks Near Tragedy to Sheer Comedy Tie began a trag LOCAL BREVITIES fore election recently but he did a because it would have been passed over his veto 1 realize that Taft en tered the ft majority of 1000000 votes but I predict to you that he will leave it by unanimous consent A Clever Thrust I think Roosevelt is wellmeaning too but no man any more reason to doubt his own Judgment ot a mau for the presidency than Roosevelt ac cording to himself And yet he has the nerve to offer himself up as a can for president I dont know of Anything at the Chicago convention of this year that Roosevelt didnt do for Taft al Chicago four years ago He to you then Take Taft hes city brolie and I can lead him anywhere And now he says Taft isnt fit for the presidency Isnt It strange that he should aak a reward for his mistake In guaranteeing Taft he said Heres Take him I guarantees him It he makes a mis take Ill
