ESTABLISHED The Had Invested About Insurance Covers bat a Fraction of the of the Fire Not Known The Woodland Steam Laundry is a mass of ruins The building ns well as all the contents was either de or ruined by a fire that oc curred at nn early hour this morning An employe at the livery stable otl the opposite side of the street says he saw a light in tho building about 5 oclock this and that was prob ably the beginning of the fire Sev eral parties saw n bright light shining through the window ahout G oclock and an was turned in The re sponge by the department was prompt but a fire inside a corrugated iron building is very hard to fight and aboul all the could do was to confine the flames to the building There was a rumor that a delay was caused because the engine could get no water That however is not true Mayor Mitchell was at the waterworks after tho fire was out and all the tanks were nearly full The origin of the fire is unknown Mr has a theory that it caught from the electric wires hut there is nothing to base that on except thai the lights were flickering in that part of town prior to the discovery of the fire Col Osborn says there were no wires on the second floor where the fire is supposed to have started He says tiis wire runs in the building through a metal conduit and he wiring was per fect Mr Dell whose duty it Is to turn off all the gas made the rounds last night about 8 oclock and Mrs Knudson who is generally the last one to leave tho building Is confident that there was no five of any kind when the was closed at the close of the days work j Mr and Mrs Knudson had up rooms onthe second floor The work was just completed Friday and they expected to move into them and re sida there on and after February Most of the weeks washing was de livered on Friday There were only clothes on hand as could be washed and delivered today The plant was equipped with the and best machinery Mr and Mrs Knudson purchased the business about two years ago mid they put in the very best machinery they could got for a plant of that capacity The building and all the equipment about The building was in sured in companies represented by J D H G Lawson for SOO machinery was insured in companies represented by Henry for y The destruction of the plant Is not only a loss to the proprietors but it is a severe blow to Woodland There were twenty employes on the payroll Mr and Mrs Knudson feel their loss keenly but they are not going to quit They announce that if their patrons will only be patient and stay with them that they will have another plant equally as good in operation at the earliest practicable moment In the meantime they nave made arrange ment with the Mason Laundry in Sac to do their work until the new plant Is ready for operation They will keep their delivery wagons run ning as usual and the delivery will bo as prompt as the cir The telephone and electric wire that ran cown the alley south of the build ing wast put out of commission The telephone company was the heaviest loser Two of its cables were burned y and tho connection at least four hundred wires was broken Three hundred telephones were out for some time this morning and some of then will not be working before tomorrow Help came over from Sacramento on the i oclock train and a big force of men Is engaged in the lines The liver loses Its activity at times and needs help Is Penniless and Sightless He Spent His last Days After Prominence aid Prosperity Andy McClory a Mexican war an Is buried in Winters In an un marked grave He came to California iu and engaged in mining until in 1852 when he located in Yolo coun ty near Winters and engaged iu farm ing For many years he was a prom inent and prosperous citizen but was finally overtaken by adversity and died blind and penniless In 1909 he be came an Inmate of the county hos pital but after remaining here for a couple of months was sent to the Sol diers Home He remained there but a soort time and was taken to Sacra mento where he died Old friends gave him decent burial in the Win ters cemetery A few months ago some of tho old residents who kaew him when he was prosperous while discussing the matter deplored the fact that no his last resting place and expressed a willing ness to subscribe a fund to buy place and erect a suitable monument to his memory They were informed that congress by special act had pro vided a fund for the express purpose of marking the graves of old soldiers died in indigent circumstances but I hat it would be necessary to ur niso the war department with the ne Information in relation to his enlistment service and discharge An investigation was started with the result that it was ascertained that was mustered into service Novem ber 8 at Pittsburg nia as first lieutenant of Captain Rowleys company of Colum bia and Maryland volunteers known as Colonel Hughes regiment to serve during the Mexican war He was present when General Santa Ana surrendered his sword to General Scott Ho was honorably dis charged at Pittsburg on July 18 1848 Soon after passage of the special act of congress Mrs E S Farnham of this city whose husband Is a veteran of the civil war interested herself in the matter with the result that she ILIS secured a large number of headstones to mark the graves of Mexican and civil war veterans who are buried In the city cemetery of Woodland and elsewhere in the county The records Have been turned over to her and no doubt the monument to tho memory of Andy McClory will in due time in his last earthly resting place At a regular of Lodge No Winners Score Here 26 to 6 and in Davis 34 to 19 College City and State Farm The Yolo County Athletic League opened the season Friday with basketball games at Woodland be tween College City and Company F teams and at Davis between Woodland high school and Slate Farm teams Notwithstanding the stormy weath er the game ut Woodland was fairly well attended The College City boys put up a stiff fight but they were far outclassed especially in size The members of Company Fs team had nothing over their opponents in speed but weight and height were im portant factors iu determining the re sult The score iu each half was 13 to 3 in favor of the home team The lineup was as Company Richter and Ed Dyas forwards first half and W Richter and Willie Pepper second half Rodney Hill center A Richter and Roy Clover guards College Burtis and L Pet erson forwards H cen ter H Ford captain and C Stone guards For College City Burtis threw a field goal and Stone made a free throw in I he first half and Bord made a field goal and Stone another free throw In the second period For Company F W Richter made six points in half all from field goals Captain Hill threw one field goal and made three free throws in the half and three field goals and a free throw in the second half a total of twelve points and Bd Dyas two points iu the first half The game at Davis was played in Silvia hall before a large crowd and resulted in a victory for the high school team by a score of 34 to 19 The referee and umpire were Messrs Doz ier and Phillips respectively The lineup of the two teams was as fol low
