at the Home of Her Daughter Mrs F 0 Swinney Monday Afternoon When the Yoio County Teachers In was called to order Monday af there were but six failures to respond to the and it is prob able that these absentees will be pres ent before the institute closes This Is considered a remarkably good show ing and indicates that the teachers feel commendable interest in the work of tile institute Miss May E Dexter cut out the per preliminaries to the evident satisfaction of nlj present There were no addresses of welcome and responses bnL the institute lost no time in getting down to the serious business of Uie session Miss Hattie Lee made a motion that the institute ratify the appointment ol officers made by the superintendent and the motion prevailed These are Airs L D Lawhead Edgar Hunter and Miss Kathryn Simmons donts and March B Clements secretary Hev G A Charnock offered the in vocation and Mrs Mary Roberts Cool sang an English and an Irish ballad Tho educational feature of the insti tute opened with a lecture by E Morris Cox president of the California Teach ers Association lye theme was Hearing Lighting and Ventilating j Schoolrooms An address occupying forty minutes and discussing a subject of so much general interest cannot be synopsized and do justice to the speak er in the limited space at our disposal nnd therefore we shall not attempt it The address was full of timely sugges tions and useful information Mrs Mary Roberts Coolidge next de livered an Interesting lecture on Co Education as a Social Factor After a brief intermission Mr Cox closed the afternoon session with an instructive lecture on What the Schools Shall Gain From More Effect ive Teachers Organizations The evening session was devoted en tirely to Mrs Mary Roberts Coolidge who gave a most interesting discourse on old English ballads with vocal il v was a large attendance and Mrs Coolidge charmed her hearers She opened her remarks by giving a brief history of the ballads and by tell ing of the characteristics chief of which she said was simplicity Often the tune was sacrificed for the story Every ballad had a well defined story hut rarely ever a moral One of the oldest ballads Chevy Chase had CQ verses to the tune of The Hunt is Up Mrs Coolidge sang several ot the verses Among other vocal il lustrations she rendered Pastime in Good Company Bailiffs Daughter of Islington O What a Plague Is Iove Ballad of the Spanish Lady Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes Mrs Coolidge then gave a number of illustrations from ballads in Shake speares plays They included ballads v snug by Falstaff Desdemona Lover and His Lass from As You Like It and one from Winters Tale She rendered Barbara Allen as an illustration of the period of Charles il She declared there were few bal lads ot any beauty In the 18th century Mary Dawsons Hornpipe was one of the best and Early One Morning As an illustration of the 19th century Khe rendered Allen Percy At the conclusion in response to per applause Mrs Coolidge ren tared the Aloha or farewell song of Hawaii familiar to many With all due respect to the English ballad it was in our humble judgment by far the most pleasing selection rendered during the tunnel would delay the train several hours made a change in the plans necessary A number of the teachers made the trip by team There will he no session this even ing and many of the visitors will prob ably avail themselves of tho t to attend the performance of The Time The Place and The Girl At p m Monday November 1 1909 Juliet Cole passed from life For ten months she had been in fail ing health but only for the past week was her deemed serious She had made her home with her third daughter tho wife of F O Swinney of Esparto The subject of this sketch was the second daughter ot the late Hon Wm Jacobs and Stevens Jacobs She was a child of singular beauty and developed into a lovely woman Her parents were residents of Indian apolis Indiana at the time of her birth November 23 1831 When she was 11 years old in 1842 hey removed to Davis county Iowa ind afterwards settled at the Jacobs arm in Keokuk county Iowa There Juliet Jacobs grew up with her broth ers sisters and cousins happy as a could he On October B 1848 she married John Bailey Cole of Kentuck In she crossed tho plains with her husband and two little sons They started in Captain wagon train and after an adventurous trip reached Dia mond Springs August 1 1852 The members of the Cole family at this place only a short time removing later to they lived nearly two years They lived near in Solano county four years in Capay galley two years on Willow rears It was in November that hey settled at the Cole place near Esparto For 40 years this family have Mrs Cole was a woman of strong personality and unswerving principles Scared in a family of fifteen children jy Baptist parents she was of a deep y religious nature but very reserved in expressing her deeper feeling She became a of the tion church of Capay when that church was organized and held to its doc trines She was a devoted mother the par ent of twelve children of whom survive her They have all been near Her In her last Illness They are Wil liam Emmert David Vincent John and Oscar Cole Mrs A L McCloud Mrs W E Jacobs Mrs P O Swinney and Mrs J L Black Lejt a widow when in her very prime she devoted her life to tho rear Ing of her nine living children Her last words were Lord I thank thee that I have been spared all these years Besides her own children she has thirtyone great grandchildren each of whom was very dear to her She has three brothers and four sisters who survive her They are Lydia P H and J D Jacobs of Keokuk Iowa Mrs J O C Wimer of Salem Oregon Mrs George Wimer of Cool county Oregon Mrs Henry Grien of Modoc county Cal and I N Testimony Offered by Krs McKay to Show Husbands Cruelty Mrs McKay wll be al lowed hereafter to bear her maiden nama of Curtiss Quietly Monday afternoon In Judge Shields court after testimony by herself her mother Mrs W C net aunt Mrs Mattle Porter to the effect that Daniel McKay had been cruel to her and had struck her despite her pleadings she was granted an Inter locutory decree of divorce for Mrs McKay The witnesses testified that when McKay had struck his wife he declared he was going right down and apply for a divorce that she clung to him and Implored him not to hut that he Insisted None of the allegations In McKays complaint were brought out The method was ered the best way out of litigation and the one affording the least publicity to domestic difficulties after the prop erty company is more reasonable in its demands He said that in view of the fact that the com pany once promised to construct a steel bridge with a life of fifteen years and secured aid to the amount 000 on
