Woodland Daily Democrat (Newspaper) - October 19, 1908, Woodland, California WEEKLY ESTABLISHED 1869 WOODLAND CALIFORNIA EVENING 1C 1908 DAILY ESTABLISHED 1877 ADDRESSES BY THE NOMINEES Both Parties Opened the County Campaign Saturday H A Hawkins at Winters Unfair cans at Madison Both the Democratic and the lican county candidates opened their campaign last Saturday night the Democrats at Winters and the licans at Madison W chairman of the county central at Winters and a brief but earnest Introduc tory speech W H Roberts a San Jose attorney waa the principal speaker of the even ing and he made a forcible speech cov ering all the issues of the campaign N A Hawkins and Lawrence Wil son also spoke both made good Impressions Mr Wilson read a number ol letters received from varl UB v Interests re him to define his position many public and local questions He answered them all fully and frankly and to the apparent satisfaction of the audience Among other things Mr said I have been informed that a rumor is in circulation that while I was a member of the legislature in 1905 I tried to raise the salaries ofthe county The statement ie an unfair one Ift to and tried to raise tie salaries I would have done so aitI performed and every gave while a member of the leg was done with the Intention of carrying out the wishes of the people Shortly after my election It was sug gested to me that it would be greatly to the benefit of the county to have a separate office made of the tax that such action would have the support the Board of Su under whose control the matter rested It was my intention fhd I so stated that no action would by the people were consulted and that whatever was must meet with practically their unan consent On January IS 1905 I received two bills prepared by the sheriffs off toe additional coming from another official Requests accompanied these bills that I have them passed The bills I consolidated and on January introduced them as Assembly Bills 698 and 699 As soon bills had been printed I Bent copies of them to the papers In the county and to several individuals to gether with a request that the people express on the ity of passing the bills The papers published the substance of the bills In full On February 6 1905 the Demo crat had editorial comments on them and among other things referring to me said He has also Invited public comment on the same and says be will be guided by the consensus of public opinion Is this not conclusive evidence that I was pursuing the right course The next Issue of the Mall contained among other things the following He encloses a letter In which he says he would like an expression of opinion from different persons as to whether the changes are desirable or not The following Sunday I came home for the purpose of making an enquiry concerning the advisability of taking up and I Jound that there was no sentiment whatever in favor their passage and I then determined that the bills would not receive my support far as I was con cerned ended the matter t consider that public official rep resents all the people and that every persons cause is be heard Every experienced legislator will In a prepared by a respect able constituent refer It to an committee and have it passed to print in order that Its merits may be discussed The introduction of a lll Is no guarantee that the will be supported by the member who In It So In this case I consid ered that all parties were entitled to be beard Had there been any need for a raise In the salaries and it had been so shown to me I should have passed the but finding no need for such I dU as my duty required and dropped the measure I think I was of some real service to he people while In the legislature jind I submit that It would be more be coming to give me credit for something that I did accomplish rather than to blame me for something that 1 never did And now while I am engaged In a task not altogether pleasant I desire to answer another matter which I am informed has been somewhat generally It Is this That I have mixed up in the affairs of the Bank ot Woodland to such an extent that It might affect my election to the office of superior judge This too Is a very unfair statement My rela with the Bank of Woodland are and always have been very simple and very plain My professional engage ments however up to the present time would never permit me to discuss them For many years I have pied offices in the Bank building I have always paid them my rent I have performed for them such legal services as required attention I am not an officer of the bank and never have been I do not own a share of stock and never did Their business meetings 1 have never attended and nothing to do with aud know nothing about their business policies They have called upon mein all cases 1 believe for legal advice and 1 think their legal been protected There our relations end it has never been anything but that or attorney and client I am not now receiving and never have received any from the bank I have not at the pres ent time a single retainer from them I have not commenced an action in court for February 27 1907 more than nineteen mouths ago What titles I have examined and what ad vice I have given has been paid for at the time the services were rendered With the exception perhaps of one old matter pending la the courts I have no business for them I have performed all services that I con to perform and they have paid me all fees due me and their relations to me at the present time are exactly the same as that of any former client When I am elected judge my relations them will have ceased entirely At the beginning of this year I had a large amount of unfinished business on hand I have diligently devoted my attention during the entire year to fin ishing this business and have declined for mady months to take new business for I did not wish to turn the old business over much ol it a confidential nature to anyone else I have in the courts no contested matters with the exception of two or three cases oh ap peal I this with purpose I wanted to be able to say without qualification that I have no clients to whom I owe the least obligation other than good Will It any further rumors are started In relation to anj act of mine I simply ask that the full facts be made known I have no fear of the consequences I have never done an act for which I need apologize or which need cause my friends the least uneasiness I know I have always had the highest respect and confidence of those who know me best and that confidence I never have and never shall betray It is my earnest desire to receive the united support of my party and of my friends but such support inust come to me voluntarily for I have no prom ises to make or favors to bestow If I am elected It will be for the purpose of administering the law and not to hand out judicial favors be they small or great Upon this platform I earn solicit the support of all I have now practiced law for thirty consecutive years I have never failed In anything I undertook to do My children are grown to manhood and my mind Is now reaching out from self to find a place for broader usefulness My highest ambition Is to fill honor ably the position of judge of the superi or court I will devote my entire at tention to it and feel that I shall make best as it will be the crowning work of my life earache in two toothache or pain or burn or scold In 1 hour mua cit ache two boon aore throat twelve Dr Oil At the Republican meeting for coun ty candidates held in Madison hall high schools first trial with the pig skin and it waa Woodlands offday or something similar to that As a result the game was a very poor exhibition Neither team played had ever seen a game before Esparto comes In for more praise than Woodland for their playing can be excused by the fact that most of their team had never played In a game before Every team has an offday and let us hope that Saturday waa Woodlands offday for their playing against Es parto surely doesnt warrant any championship aspirations Those who have seen tbe locals in action before know that they are capable of playing better ball and they aso know that If Woodland jls to make any kind of fight for the championship the boys will have to get In and work and play bet ter than they did Saturday Twice In
