their opening of the campaign in new arm ory hall Thursday evening and the most optimistic member of the party hardly go on record with the ion that it was a success It was a tinct disappointment from any point of waa a in but not to exceed two hundred on the floor ot the hall The stage presented a very attract ive The decorations were and better arranged than those at the Phelan meeting on Tuesday previously played on Maln street while the audience was gathering EH Archer chairman of the He publican county central committee called the meeting to order and intro City Trustee Curson aa chair man Major Curson made a brief but felicitous introductory address after which he road a list bf twentyeight Of this number nine took their seats on the stage while the hand was playing a medley of national airs Dr Glering was the first speaker he came all the way from Mary land to make speeches for the lican ticket he is wasting a vast amount of energy and the committee burning some money He is rambling and Incoherent and often obscures his meaning by the use of the wrong word The Fresno Republican recently reproduced paragraphs from speeches made by George Knight and Tom with the evident day when the friends of the Woodland school will have an opportunity to witness a carnival of athletic events is good The Sacramento high school basket ball and football teams will arrive on the he saw in Oakland that he suffered a lapse of memory and it was necessary to form a detail to restore him to the company However he was rescued from his fair admirers without any serious results We have read about the slow trains in Arkansas but I am sure they pale into insignificance if a S 1J special or excursion train A mud turtle or a cricket could make one of them look like an on team Altogether we were on the road twenty hours The experience was so out of the or dinary and the soldier boys were BO exhilarated with that most of them were wide awake a the way down and the few who for the use of the men and plenty of books and magazines There are also checker and ches boards and other opportunities fo amusement and entertainment Pr saved the honor of th company beating the champion checke players from two other champions The number who congregate in thes tents seem to indicate that the Y C A quarters are a popular resort While there I met some of the me comprising the met on the state farm at Davis on Thursday for a session ot three days Tho program is a long nnd Interesting one and several able and distinguished mea will make speeches or contribute papers The proceedings are so voluminous that uone but the vory best equipped newspaper offices can handle them For instance three or four of the speeches made or papers read on the first day of the session would 111 all the news columns ot the Democrat and any synopsis of them would fall for short of doing them justice There was n very large attendance on the first day The institute called to order by Prof E J Wick son dean of the agricultural college who gave a brief history of the opera tions on the stale farm and outlined the purposes of those In charge Prof Leroy Anderson after extend ing a there will be classes of Juniors and seniors from Berkeley who will come to the school to take the final course to prepare them to become ex perts in their professions It is also the intention to quent speech on the necessity for higher education In educational mat ters which aroused great enthusiasm Director C P Curtiss of the Iowa Agricultural College spoke very highly of the future of
