their opening of the campaign in new arm ory hall Thursday evening and the most optimistic member of the party hardly go on record with the ion that it was a success It was a tinct disappointment from any point of waa a in but not to exceed two hundred on the floor ot the hall The stage presented a very attract ive The decorations were and better arranged than those at the Phelan meeting on Tuesday Somo enthusiastic Republi can women are entitled to credit for Wat Woodland band occupied the swinging band stand and rendered a number of splendid selections at in during the evening It had previously played on Maln street while the audience was gathering EH Archer chairman of the He publican county central committee called the meeting to order and intro City Trustee Curson aa chair man Major Curson made a brief but felicitous introductory address after which he road a list bf twentyeight Of this number nine took their seats on the stage while the hand was playing a medley of national airs Dr Glering was the first speaker he came all the way from Mary land to make speeches for the lican ticket he is wasting a vast amount of energy and the committee burning some money He is rambling and Incoherent and often obscures his meaning by the use of the wrong word The Fresno Republican recently reproduced paragraphs from speeches made by George Knight and Tom with the evident Intention of showing how what sometimes passes as oratory looks in cold type Some of Dr mixed metaphors would he quite an addition to that collection In one of MB pictures of the prosperity that has prevailed under Republican rule he paid n glowing tribute to the sweet singing echo of tbe music of the He admitted that Mr Bryan ia an honest man but charged him with the American people He said he is a fascinating orator but can make more trouble in ten all the prize fighters and bulldogs in America As he furnished no dia gram we dont pretend to grasp the full meaning or the aptness ot the il lustration warned the audience of the In effects of a woman and some capitalists in England to influence the election by the contribution of money to the Bryan campaign fund He called to mind the fact that dur ing the Cleveland administration fif teen banks failed and hard times pre but in referring to the fact that all the banks were closed for weeks during the Roosevelt adminis tration he designated it as a very pe culiar condition and not as a holi day which Governor Gillett called it He unless Mr Taft is elected be a revolution in this country and In deploring the pos of the election of Mr Bryan Comforted himself with the reflection that the moneyed Interests of this will not permit It After appealing to tho audience to stand with him on the 2d of Novem ber the second Tuesday of November and reading an extract from one of speeches he subsided Then Mr Hart was Introduced He some men who were standing In the doorways to come forward and take seats it look more like a Dr Glering tried to help things out by remarking Come along boys and take a seat on the mourners beach dont be ashamed Mr Hart Is a polished speaker but he was handicapped by coming on after Dr Giering had the audience go lng Mr Hart made a plea with the restless crowd to stay and hear him out promising not to speak ong He a tribute to California and Cali fornia women He discussed the tariff the bank deposit guaranty and the labor question and closed with a statement of what the Republican party has done during the last twelve years We will make ment on his argument In this issue if we can make room and 11 not certain ly In Saturdays paper Upon the conclusion of Mr Harts speech there were cheera for the ticket and the audience quickly dispersed The outlook is for fine weather on Saturday the to get a real taste ot mili tary life No doubt we will know more about it before the week Is over Company F arrived Ing and at once established camp on the hills south of the old camp ground in a surprisingly short time every thing was in fairly good order The trip down was uneventful ex cept that Corporal Eddie Smith be came so interested perhaps fascinated would be the better word with what he saw in Oakland that he suffered a lapse of memory and it was necessary to form a detail to restore him to the company However he was rescued from his fair admirers without any serious results We have read about the slow trains in Arkansas but I am sure they pale into insignificance if a S 1J special or excursion train A mud turtle or a cricket could make one of them look like an on team Altogether we were on the road twenty hours The experience was so out of the or dinary and the soldier boys were BO exhilarated with that most of them were wide awake a the way down and the few who wantec to sleep were denied the privilege There was no abatement of the on the arrival the tents were quickly pitched and a model camp es It may seem out of place for me to throw any bouquets but I think it Is to make a Ipt of noise and do they due l hone to tnat on tin can to their favorites on to vie way down Company F earned the rep of being in the front rank foi tory Tlie football team will
