Woodland Daily Democrat (Newspaper) - October 5, 1908, Woodland, California WEEKLY ESTABLISHED 1869 CALIFORNIA MONDAY EVENING OCTOBER 5 1908 A GREAT GAME OF BASEBALL DAILY ESTABLISHED 1877 A Pitchers Battle Wit EKM Should Have WOE Bat luck All on the Bide of All Tola A great big crowd lots of enthusiasm and perfect weather the features of Sundays contest between Woodland and the Yolo County team of Davis Davis won 3 to 2 after eleven Innings of sensational playing In which the ele ment of luck cut a wide swath The gome was the first of a series of three to be played between the two it is safe to say that the remaining games of the series will create widespread interest Davis got off in the lead with a run la tie second inning only to be over come by Woodland who scored two runs In the third Tie game ran along smoothly then up to the eighth inning without a run for either side and looked like a vic tory for Woodland In the eighth however the All Yolo County aggre gation tied the score and came through with the winning run In the eleventh v The game with Davis at the Both teams were quickly retired la the opening Inning In the second inning with two men gone Will Baird readied first on Joe Williams error stole second and came home pc Percy Hoogs sharp drive past base Woodland scored the only earned runs of tie game in the following In ning Danis hit past third for a single Joe Williams followed with a Texas Leaguer and White came to the bat After Cousin Bob in vain at two sharp curve balls Hoag made the fatal mistake of grooving the iall with the result that Bob soaked It ior a twobagger scoring both run ners Bob died on second while Tracy re tired the side on two assists and a fau out Pine twirling and almost perfect fielding prevented any more scoring by either until the eighth inning though Woodland lost a run tn the through a mis taken decision of the umpire Joe Baird had reached second base on brother Wills wide toss to first when after McDonald had fanned Jamison hit a scorcher along the first base line The ball struck fair and Baird reached home before the ball was fielded to the plate The umpire however waived him back to second declaring the hit a foul Jamison then fanned and Baird was caught stealing third i A piece of bonehead playing tn Dahls and White were the of fenders was responsibly lor the run that tied the score In the eighth in ning With one man gone Tracy lifted a high fly midway between cen ter and left Danls and White both started after It White got tts hands on It and Danis collided with causing him toc drop the balland al lowing Hoag to reach second Will Hoy fouled Joe Williams and dash for third reaching the bag in safety by good base run ning George Adams hit a grounder McDonald that should have been an easy oot but the ball struck a clod and over the second head scoring Hoag It was a lucky run for Davis and would never have occurred had Danis and White not fig ured la such a stupid play and forth their best efforts In the last few innings and the batters were almost helpless before them The fatal base on balls the only pass issued during the game came to Tracy in the eleventh inning Tracy second and ad to third on low throw to the second cushion Hoy squeezed Tracy over with winning run on one of the la the game Woodland toeven tie score In the final halif or the inning but could oot a w M first base F Aa predicted UM fame proved to at a battle In which Tracy who has had the benefit of big league experience a trifle more effective than Wittmer while on the other hand the latter had much better control Hoag was very wild at the beginning of the game having no control either of hia curve or fast hall in the third Inning he was touched In a lively man ner After that not a hlf was secured from his delivery and he seemed to im prove with each Inning Wittmer s deserving of praise for the game he twirled and would have been a victory If the goddess of luck had perched foran instant on hia banner Jamison of caught fairly well Ms of experience in such fast company He is a game little prayer and with more experience may do Ollie Hoag show ed the benefit of experience by the manner in which he worked be hind the bat In every department ex cept at the bat he showed up very strong Will Adams who has also had some big league experience showed up exceedingly well He hit the ball but was unfortunate in not landing it in a safe spot The All Yolo aggregation played a remarkably good fielding game con the fact that nearly all of the players are out of practice and had never played together before as a team played a good game Though charged with two errors some of the best fielding in the game was ex by Joe Williams P B Edson of Knights Lauding aa umpire in absence of Henley Mr Edson was thoroughly honest and impartial but some of his decisions were criticised severely In justice to Mr it should he stated that he did not seek the Job and only consented to officiate for Manager Joyce who at the last mo ment was disappointed by the failure of Henley to arrive Mr Edson stated before the game that he was accustomed to umpiring behind the ana that he could not do himself jus the center of the diamond There was no extra grounds and he was compelled to um pire from the center The crowd was large and good natur ed and
