years ago and the two have not met since Mrs J L Thompson who has been visiting Mr and Mrs T H Kitto left for her home in Butte Meadows today She was accompanied by Mrs Kitto her mother Mrs J B Nixon until after the races after which she will also go to Big Meadows gan P Summers and A RED BLUFF DEATH RED BLUFF August Lacy Masten died Thursday afternoon at the home of his son Thomas B Masten about sixteen miles west of Red Bluff Deceased had long been an Invalid and his death was due to the infirmities of old ago The funeral services were held at the Christian church Friday afternoon Rev H V Moore of the M B church officiating Mr Masten was bora November 6 1830 and had journeyed across the plains in 1849 and followed the pation of mining for the first few years later locating Yolo county where ho married a Miss Black daugh ter of a wellknown and prominent family of that section Mr and Mrs Masten moved to Sebastopol Sonoma county and were residents of that place for a number of years They later moved to Tehama county where the family have become prominent cit Mr Masten had been retired from active business for many years and though ot lato he had not been lead ing a very active life still he had over seen the management of stores and other business in various places He was highly esteemed in this county and his death will be regretted by a largo circle of friends and acquaint ances Ho Is survived by three chil O Masten Thomas D Mas ten and Mrs J J last named residing in Redding Charles Laugenour Knights V L Bourland South P Montgomery and 0 P Wilbur After some discussion it was decided to hold a convention in this city on the of August to select delegates to the state congressional and district conventions Primaries for tho selection of dele gates to this county convention were ordered for August 18th between the hours of 3 and 6 in the afternoon Cau cuses are to be held at p m an the 17th of August The test will be a Intention to vote for the nominees of the Democratic party at the next election H was decided to have a convention of 75 delegates on the basis of one delegate for every 25 votes or frac tion thereof cast for Lane On motion of C P Summers second ed by Sid Leathers it was decided unanimously to hold a county conven tion instead of the Crawford primaries The representation by precincts will therefore be as follows Woodland No i 9 the conven tion for nominating candidates for county and township offices on Sep tember at 2 oclock Primaries for the election of FOR RECORDER Thomas Slaven Is seeking the Demo cratic nomination for county recorder and the announcement of his candidacy appears in the proper column Mr has never before been an as for public position but he has been a consistent and loyal worker in the ranks ever since he became old enough to participate In politics In the performance of faithful and effi cient service for party friends he has earned an enviable reputation as an influential worker and deserves rec Mr Slaven Is well Inform ed and competent and his integrity has never been questioned delegates to the county convention will be held on September IB between the hours of 1 and 5 and caucuses for from Red Bluff In Its place Tho trou ble Is duo to a fire which Friday night partially destroyed tunnel No C one of the long underground cuts of tho Southern Pacific company through tho SIskiyou mountains This will seri handicap the movement of trains between here and Portland and all freight traffic on tho Sacramento di vision will bo delayed for nt least sev eral days Tho tire started from burning brush which had been carelessly loft to burn and before the men In charge of the work could check the flames had eaten well into the timbers of tho tun nel Within a short time one end of tho long artificial cavern was a mass of roaring crackling flames nnd the few men engaged in fighting the flames were practically powerless to cheek the progress of the fire with meager facilities at hand Soon the burning of tho supporting timbers al lowed tho walls of tho tunnel to cave nnd when it was found that the force of engaged was powerless to cope with the flames a telegraph call for aid was flashed to Sacramento at about oclock last night The officials there Immedi ately began gathering a force of men to send to the help of the crew at tho tunnel About 200 men were securer and were sent out on a flying train to the scene of the fire The re lief train has the right of way over al other traffic and when it pulled ou behind one of the tastes engines it was hoped that It would ar rive in time to n portion of the tunnel from collapse Tunnel No S is just a short distance below Delta and about 200 miles from Sacramento and It was expected tha the relief train would have to a record run to save even a part o the tunnel On tho special was carried a quantity of fire apparatus and a successful combat with the flames was expected Passenger traffic will bo only slight ly Impeded however Passengers am mail will bo transferred from on train over the hill through which th tunnel cuts to another train on tli opposite side INTERMENT OF The funeral of James Oldham wh died In Woodland took
