Woodland Daily Democrat (Newspaper) - January 24, 1906, Woodland, California WEEKLY ESTABLISHED 1859 WOODLAND CALIFORNIA WEDNESDAY EVENING JANUARY 24 1900 DAILY ESTABLISHED 1877 OFFERINGS AT THE PLAYHOUSE Hubert Henry Cousin Kate with Alberta Oallatin in the title role Tuesday evening proved to be one of the most pleasing bills ever presented to our theatergoers Both the play and the star fulfilled expectations and lived up to the many flattering notices that preceded them A fairly good sized audience thor enjoyed the production and ac tually became enthusiastic especially at the close of that excellent second act when they demanded several cur tain calls tor Miss Gallatln and her excellent young leading man Wil fred Rogers Cousin Kate is a charming come dy depleting a pretty love story in a most original manner The play opens with the disappearance of a be and the appearance on the scene of the village clergyman who offers him self instead Cousin Kate arrives and describes a railroad Journey In which she meets the missing lover but the fact that he Is wanted by another for a bridegroom IB not known to her or GOAL IS REACHED portraying who really was in capable of knowing her own mind and her work particularly in the final act was very clever May Wells as the widow was good and Tommie Kelly was just like the ordinary schoolboy that ho was ex to impersonate This was Miss first visit to Woodland as a star but we sin cerely hope that it will not be her last Theatergoers welcome at any time the return of this most accom actress The everlasting Yon Yonson is booked for the opera house on Tues day evening January In discussing the longevity of com edies upon the American stage due attention must be paid to the appar ently Imperishable Yon Yonson Some managers are wont to boast of a series of long runs in New York city without taking cognizance ot the impression their entertainment leaves Mrs S A Dead at the Age of Eightysix EROS TRIUMPHS Her Only Son Ed B clergyman securing the girl he loves while Kate answers Sure and 1 will when the young lover asks her to become his wife there is never any serious doubt as to how it will all terminate the manner of straightening out affairs is not at all apparent and the Interest Is maintained throughout The second act Is the best of the play Miss Gallatin and Mr Rogers have almost the entire act to them selves and both prove themselves to be artists Their dream of love which came to such an abrupt and painful ending gave both an opportunity to do some wonderfully clever both were equal to the occasion Miss support is the ex ception of Mr Magnus whose min ister Is clearly out of tune Mr Rogers possesses a bit of de lightful Irish brogue that wears well and he makes just the sort of a man you want Kate to kind As to Japan the problem is equal uncertain The future Is In the gras of the oriental mind This wo say wo cannot fathom At least no on has been yet a wholly prophet Mostly the oriental mln is like any other mind It sees clearl and acts accordingly But It Is ol very old nnd our race of Saxon pa venua on the field ot history canni grasp Its sinuosities A few things aro certain One is this old Japan has como to the parting of the ways The one loads through military glory to em pire to the limelight glare and scare heads of newspapers to national bank and political degradation The other leads through economy patience education development of resources to the highest achievements of the highest races Doubtless Uio future will he between the two for history never throws a clean switch but It is DIVERGING ROADS Doubtless the great Indemnity WEB o be the chief agency In the Hme ght program and the loss ot this In may prove to be a saving In In Japan This Indemnity could have been used for just Japan will find moel hurtful swollen army and navy a subsidized protected manufactures he appearance of prosperity and the mailed flat for the holding ot Korea and Manchuria Peace without subsidy checks this Moneylenders charge a high rate of Interest on their contributions o glory Some part ot this program cannot be avoided though withal there must be an Increase In taxes Korea will remain Japanese Togo will lead a fleet and there must be trained cers and a standing army The need of this and the dangers from Japan ese jingoism are alike reduced by the sobering alliance with Great Britain Japan has yet to learn the art of do things on a large scale and do them right Art In Japan Is a matter ot exquisite development Nothing can be more refined more Japanese things ot beauty But many things not beautiful are needed In Japan and are made there but on the whole not as the Europeans make them and not as well Japanese Is too often clumsy and crude It Is counted that In factory work ono American workman Is worth four Japanese So that In the large common Japanese labor Is not cheap In the crudest things for which coolie labor can be used Cheap labor Is never cheap That is cheap est In which the Individual man counts most It Is true that Japan has great manufacturing cities Osaka Is as large as Manchester or and her smoke bangs as black over the green fields But It will be many years before Osaka can be a rival to these cities In commercial output Yet In the evolution of things that time will come and the sooner the better not yet clear which set of
