on Wednesday delivered an address on Material Social and Edu Value of Instruction in Ag before the farmers insti tute now in session in Berkeley The portion ot his address which mos concerns Yolo county was as follows After calling attention to the failure of the legislature to give us an agri cultural college Judge Shields said For years agricultural colleges in other states have been receiving hun of thousands of dollars whili agricultural college has nothing but neglect During the las three years while our agricultural co lege has received nothing the low college received about pop proves this theory to be cor rect The good work which has been done by the dean and faculty of our college has been In tho face of discouraging neglect and at the price of sacrifices which they never should have been called upon to suffer I will not here attempt to place re sponsibility for these conditions It Is sufficient to know that the cause of agricultural education In California has reached a crisis and that the position is general to do something to place It on a new footing To em that feeling and in the hope that it may contribute something to the Influences working for prompt ac tion I will call attention to of the tangible benefits we may expect from a more progressive policy When we compare the total value of all our farm products 131000000 with the crop of little Iowa we ask How can we equal it It might Indi cate some certain directions In which It can be excelled Judge Shields then pointed out the great deterioration of our wheat crop and showed that If It was Improved to the grade of wheat grown In other its value would be increased By Increase in quantity Its value could be Increased by an additional By the ex of better Intelligence our prune crop could bo increased in value by By care in managing our poultry and intelligence in breeding them our increase from source should be It our cows were of the average quality of those of Hol land our butter crop would yearly be increased in value by over But why particularize further These matters are only details of a vast agricultural system to which the touch of better training will impart a wholly school teams will line up Saturday for the first S V I A L game of the season to be played in this city The struggle will occur at Bast Park commencing at oclock The gridiron has been put In good condition It will be enclosed with wire in order to keep the spectators from interfering with the players This will be greatly appreciated not only by the players but by tators who will have a good viewing the game Another very commendable feature the Introduction of outside This should insure fair and impartial rulings and thus leave either side without any excuse to offer on account of the referees or umpire Either Stearns fullback of the U C varsity team or Golcher captain of the U C freshman team will officiate for Woodland and Con A Davis for Chico Gregg will act as timekeeper and
