injured July 28 Battle at Pilot Hill between posses and escapes Convict J J Allison wounded and commits suicide July Fugitive convicts elude and hiding place unknown Posses gather at Cool and hopa to wound ed and captured at Auburn Many hot upon imagin ary trails of Howard I I IMI M H 1 1 M SACRAMENTO August No captures of convicts are re ported from anywhere today The Sacramento police be that two of the escapes Fahey and Miller are now hid Ing in Sacramento They stole a horse and cart at Alder creek on Thursday and when last seen were headed this way AUBURN August Albert Seavis the negro who was among the thirteen convicts who escaped from Folsom a week ago Is behind prison bars In the county Jail at Auburn with a bad wound In the right leg caused by two of buckshot from the guns of Sheriff Kenna and Deputy Sheriff Conn Thursday evening was seen to get on freight train No 214 eastbound from New castle When the train arrived at Au burn Conductor N Nelson re ported the discovery to Operator J P who called up the sheriffs office The train was held and Sheriff Keona and Deputy Sheriff Coan hur ried to the depot Seavis had been riding behind the pusher engine Engineer Ed Waters had just been talking to Seavis who slipped dff the car when the train stopped and was sitting down on some lumber Waters asked him where he was going Seavis replied that he was going harvesting In Nevada When Keen a and Coan arrived one officer went on side of the train When they came up to Seavis they called on him to surrender Seavis replied by firing three shots As Seavis dodged under a car both Keena and Coan emptied heir guns at him and Seavis called out Dont kill me I am Seavis The officers went to where he lay on his side holding his leg His pistol was found a few feet away fully cocked He was carried to the depot put on a stretcher and taken Into jail where his wound was dressed hunting all over the county and the columns of the Democrat could not contain all the rumors that were In circulation Some of these were ible and if the officers had not Investi gated them they might have subjected themselves to the charge of being re in their duty Others were so Improbable and palpably absurd that the wonder Is how they started A fresh arrival f ronj any of the rural dis was the signal for the gathering of a curious and excited throng and the recital of rumors and rid suspicions was listened to with much eagerness A summary of the incidents of the entire day shows that while Yolo coun ty was really the storm center in the exciting search for the convicts the developments were really of a very unimportant character The negro and the white man seen early In the morning at Chalmers Bros slaughterhouse were arrested late In the afternoon about a mile north of by Constable Haln Une and Deputy Sheriff Johnson The negro was with a big dirk and revolver all right and he carried a few extra but he did not an swer the description of Seavis The officers concluded that it would be best to detain the prisoners over night as they might be wanted somewhere but this morning they were released The negro arrested at ar rived at the sheriffs office about mid night in charge of Constable Woodard He would probably never have been suspected if lie had not carried a re volver which he accidentally dropped from his pocket on the streets of He could give no tory explanation of why he carried a revolver so Sheriff Griffin relieved him of it and let him go He was per mitted to retain his razor While all tbc rumors about the pres ence of Scavis In Yolo county were dying thick and fast Sheriff Reese of Sacramento who was in Woodland Thursday night was called to the telephone and informed that Seavis had been wounded and captured at Auburn This report is confirmed by lie telegram at the head of these col This morning District Attorney Seymour of Sacramento telephoned that he had seen the wounded man and there is no doubt that It Is Seavis THE ELUSIVE HOWARD His Reported in Many Places at the Same Time SUSPECTS FREED in Yolo County The capture of Roberts Tille Wednesday evening had the ef fect of putting everybody on the alert and arousing unwarranted suspicion every stranger Aa a mult Thursday was a strenuous day la nun Howard is another of the convicts who are earning a reputation for being ubiquitous Posses were busy on Thursday trying to intercept his flight to both Nevada and Oregon He was also omnipresent in Yolo county Late in the afternoon a telephone message was received from Winters at the sheriffs office The Information was to the effect that a man who was recog as Howard went into the drug store in the forenoon some purchases After be had gone away Constable Warder was notified came another report that the suspect had been trailed up Butah creek to valley where he turned south going in the direction of Vaca ville The same Information was sent to Solano county officials and Sheriff Keys and the constable hur ried to Winters Thursday evening the Solano county officers accom by Constable Warder Town Marshal and Nightwatch man Baucom beat the brush along creek both below and above town but failed to make any eries The Solano county officers re turned to their homes this morning Late Thursday evening came a report that Howard had pursuers In Pleasants valley reached and was pulled off a freight train A telegram received from the sheriffs office stated that there was no founda tion whatever for the rumor A telephone message from a reliable source in Winters this morning con veys the information that reports sent out from there Thursday afternoon were grossly exaggerated The man who It was claimed was Howard did not leave Winters was Men there after the report was sent out and does not bear tie faintest resemblance to How ard A clue to Howards presence In an other the county was more prom ising 9 oclock Dave Colburn came and reported that Sacra was trailing a man be to be Howard In the neighbor hood of the old canal near the Wil low slough country was confirmed half an hour later when Sheriff Reese and Constable Judge arrived in Woodland They reported that they had been fol lowing a man up river as far as he turned west At the canal he left the county rood traveled Ifc a southwesterly direction toward th clump of trees on Willow slough They abandoned the pursuit for the night and bended for Wood hud when it became to dark they could cot follow the trill It U ported that this man enquired for the railroad saying that he wanted to at some point without Woodland Another Improbable ru mor is that he admitted to people he met en route that he la one of the es caped convicts This morning Sheriff Reese and the constable resumed the pursuit at an early hour Brown Deputy and Constable Parker drove out toward the Willow slough and old canal district Later Officer Tobias left going in the same direction At 3 oclock the Democrat was In formed by the sheriffs office In Sac that the whereabouts of Sher iff Reese and Contable Judge are un known They were last heard from at M err lit station Nothing is known of the Woodland posse since It left Woodland this morning DAILY ESTABLISHED 1877 ALLEGED HOLDUP Missionary Claims to Have Been Robbed Near Merritts About 3 oclock this after noon a colored man who gave his name as David ner and his occupation as a Baptist missionary came into the Democrat office and rep resented that he had been held up and robbed by two men on the railroad track about a mile and a half below Merrill sta tion Mr Swackhanner has been engaged in missionary work in Sacramento for two weeks On Thursday he left that city He was traveling along the rail road and at the point where he was robbed the county road crosses the railroad Two men hailed him They were dressed in khaki suits wore and carried car bine rifles They wore white or volunteer belts which were with cartridges One of the men of dark com was about 40 years of age and his dark mustache ap to be dyed The other was apparently 35 years of age his hair was sandy and his face was clean shaved The robbery occurred about oclock Mr ner was relieved of which represented his net collections for missionary work in Sacra mento for two weeks After the robbery the two men left the road and started across fields in a southeasterly direction ranging between Da and Sacramento The missionary continued his Journey along the railroad in the direction of Woodland Af ter traveling about two miles he met Brown and Deputy Sheriff Griffin who are out searching for Howard He frankly admitted that the officers did not believe his story but he insists that U is true nevertheless He Is at the sher office awaiting the return of Messrs Brown and Griffin Thursday evening Messrs Clark and Anderson attorneys for Carl Hankel received a ball bond from San Fran cisco on which Theodore Goodman and Henry Harris each qualified in the sum of The sureties are base ball magnates Goodman Is treasurer of the Pacific Coast League and Harris is the owner of Hie San Francisco fran chise The Bond was approved by Judge Lawlor of Ban Francisco This bond presented to Sheriff mmn and the release of de manded The sheriff refused unless advised to do so by Judge Hart or Attorney C W Thomas He commu with Hart who advised him to send the bond over for his ex amination When asked if the approv al of Mrs attorneys would be all right Judge Hart answered in the affirmative H U Huston was not at homo but Attorney dark and Drown drove out to the residence of C W Thomas who when told of the conversation with Judge Mart declined to approve of the As n result Hankel was compelled lo remain In jail another night This morning his attorneys sent the bond to Judge Him About noon they were advised by Judge Hart that he had approved of the bond and would order the release of the prisoner As late as 3 oclock no such order was received at the sheriffs office and Hanke was still in jail 4 HANKEL NOT YET RELEASED Two Sureties Qualify for Sheriff has received a copy of the Portland Evening Telegram of August 1st which contains a fine ilc ture of the Roseburg baseball club of which oclock on The fol lowing is the version of tho friends of the trouble which resulted in his death Leigh Ingalsbe who stands charged with the murder of Cowell Is lo be vigorously prosecuted He was arrested In Santa Cruz immediately al ter death The crime of which Ingalsbe must stand trial was com mitted last March at Merced Accord ing to the Cowell family the story of the trouble leading up to the shooting Is as follows Cowell and the father of tho man charged with murder were neighbors In Merced For a long time there was no fence between tho two properties A surveyor was summoned in 1885 but notwithstanding this the fence was run ao that nine acres belonging to Cowell were on the side of the fence did not have the money to pay for his half of tho fence and Cow ell never exacted the amount In duo time the land was again surveyed ant Inglasbe paid Cowell for the nine acres on his side of tho fence Nothing more was said about the Ingalsbe half of tho expense of building the fence bast March two cows said to belong to Cowell got Into Ingalsbes corn Held and Mrs the widow sent Cowell a for damages He claimed that the charge was ab surd and that the cows could not do that much damage during the two days in which it was said that they were in the Held Cowell wrote to Mrs Ingalsbe saying that he woul not pay any such a claim and that the charge was not In good taste when he had never exacted collection for hall of the fence which ran between the two properties Nothing more was heard from the ingalsbe family until one Sunday morning when Cowell after his habit was riding around his Merced property He was hailed by a man In an adjoining Held who prov ed to bo the son Leigh Ingalsbe He demanded that Cowell apologize to his mother Cowell held that he had said nothing for which he would apol and that Ingalsbo whipped out two revolvers and shot Cowell was arrested for assault to murder but was acquitted on the ground of temporary Insanity Cow ells wound healed but he
