Woodland Daily Democrat (Newspaper) - March 2, 1903, Woodland, California WEEKLY ESTABLISHED 1859 WOODLAND CALIFORNIA MONDAY EVENING MARCH 2 1903 DAILY ESTABLISHED 1911 FIRE ALARMS Blaze in Sable House Follows Destruction of Barn Neither Fire Caused by the Other and an Incendiary Must Have Been at Work It seems almost incredible that there Is or has been anybody in the commu who would wantonly or wickedly set out knowing they are likely to result in a great loss of property and possibly in an awful sacrifice of human life And yet the ces attending two fires at an early hour this morning cannot be plausibly ex upon any ether theory The prevailing opinion Is that both fires were incendiary origin and that they were started with a malicious and possibly a murderous purpose The only element of doubt in the matter Is the fact that the family has no ene mies so far as Is known and it is there fore difficult to determine the mo live of the guilty parly if the fires really started by an incendiary This morning a few minutes before 3 oclock Miss Gertrude Gable awoke There was the reflection of a bright upon the window of her bedroom aroused her brother Hayes who Goon located the in the barn at the northeast of the family residence He hurried down and when he arrived at the scene the bulk of the was still confined to the was partially filled with alfalfa hay but the flames were Just beginning to creep down the stairway A horse and a cow were stalled in the barn These Mr Gable quickly re moved from danger He then returned and pulled out of the barn the family surrey two a cart and a bicycle By that time the whole building was enveloped In flames About the same time a man named Hayes who was on hta way saw the and notified Night watchman Tobias who ran to the en gine house and aroused the stoker and engineer A few moments later Mrs 13 C Laugenour telephoned in an alarm The department responded promptly but when the engine arrived there was nothing that could be done except to protect property la this vi There was a box In the barn contained some cartridges and ns soon as the reached this box there were several explosions In an Incredibly short time it seem ed like half the population of Wood land was at the scene of the The light breath of air thai stirred moved in a northerly direction The only residence that seemed to be men aced was that of Mrs Minnie biss corner of Second and Laurel streets A shower of sparks fell up it for several minutes Ladders were raised to the eaves and ample preparation made to put out any Maze that might break out but the tion was not necessary as none of the sparks ignited After the barn debris had burned so low that there was no danger that the fire would spread the Gable family again retired nnd the company re lumed to the engine house A few mites later Miss Myrtle Gable whose frightful loss of life to chronicle There Is a possibility that the in the basement might spread discovery as to shut off from es cape members of the family who were sleeping in the upper stories Mrs Mary Gable is so aa to be unable to leave her bed except at great risk As soon as the was discovered she was carried from her room to the front porch on a couch but soon taken back again when tt was ascertained that the residence was In no danger of tion The awakening of Miss Gertrude Ga ble and the opportune discovery of the barn fire was due to a peculiar Inci dent Dr Lawhead who was passing in that vicinity at a late hour noted that the cow waa restless and contin he observed nothing else unusual about the barn It was this persistent lowing of the cow that disturbed Miss Gables slumbers Mr Gables theory is that the smoul dered in the hay for an hour or two be fore the flames broke through the roof The barn cost about and was insured for In a company repre sented hy Huston Joslyn They also carry the insurance on the house and contents The principal loss on the residence is due to smoke and is not very serious These bring to mind a circum stance which occurred 10 or 12 years ago One evening In May while the family was seated on the front porch a tramp appeared and asked for some thing to eat Mr Gable explained that there was nothing cooked in the house and that as the hour was late it would be impracticable to accommodate him at that time The tramp refused to accept the explanation and used Such
